This is due to the outstanding plant diversity that they feed upon and the inherent difficulties involved in observing their elusive behaviour. Classically, the diet of elusive tropical herbivores is studied through the observation of browsing signs and macroscopic analysis of faeces or stomach contents. In this study, we illustrate that the original coupling of classic methods with genetic and ethnobotanical approaches yields information both about the diet diversity, the foraging modalities and the potential impact on vegetation of the largest terrestrial mammal of Amazonia, the lowland tapir. The study was conducted in the Guianan shield, where the ecology of tapirs has been less investigated. -

This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Nonetheless, very few inventories have been carried out in areas where the flora is well documented, and records of galls from herbaria and sites outside the study area have seldom been utilized. In this study we provide a checklist of the native vascular plants of a 345 ha forest reserve in the Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica and document which of these plants were found to harbor galls. The gall surveys were carried out between November 2013 and December 2016. We also cross-checked our plant list with the previous gall records from elsewhere in the country and searched for galls on herbarium specimens of dicots reported from the reserve. In total, we recorded 143 families and 1174 plant species, of which 401 were hosts of galls. Plant hosts of galls were found in the following non-mutually exclusive categories: 209 in our field sampling, 257 from previous records, and 158 in herbarium specimens. -

The effects of disturbances on plant community structure in tropical forests have been widely investigated. However, a majority of these studies examined only woody species, principally trees, whereas the effects of disturbances on the whole assemblage of vascular plants remain largely unexplored. At the present study, all vascular plants < 5m tall were surveyed in four habitats: natural treefall gaps, burned forest, and their adjacent understorey. The burned area differed from the other habitats in terms of species composition. However, species richness and plant density did not differ between burned area and the adjacent understorey, which is in accordance to the succession model that predict a rapid recovery of species richness, but with a different species composition in areas under moderate disturbance. The treefall gaps and the two areas of understorey did not differ among themselves in terms of the number of individuals, number of species, nor in species composition. The absence of differences between the vegetation in treefall gaps and in understorey areas seems to be in agreement with the current idea that the species present in treefall gaps are directly related to the vegetation composition before gap formation. -

They are also characteristic of the identities of different ethnographic groups in tropical America. However, information regarding the botanical characterization of chacras is scant. In tropical rural communities, there is a gender bias hypothesis that makes women potential reservoirs of traditional chacras plant knowledge. We present an experimental study in order to demonstrate if this knowledge difference really exists and to plan accordingly. We performed workshops in an isolated Kichwa community from Amazonian Ecuador. We calculated the cultural signififcance index (CSI) for 97 local flora plants. Our results revealed statistically significant differences. They were coherent with the Kichwa worldview and the structure of their society. We concluded that gender perspective must be taken into account in biodiversity conservation programs, such as, for example, those to implement the resilient agricultural practices of tropical contexts promoted by The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SGD2). -

The plant can be propagated using seeds but seed set is very low, as the pollination process for this plant requires a specific pollinator. Even though this plant can be propagated by cutting and division, micropropagation seems to be the best method for commercial purposes as mass multiplication can be done at a faster rate compared to the conventional method. -

Walking forested areas, along roads and paths, we try to convey the diversity of the flora of the Eastern Andes of Ecuador. Our exploration progresses through the main vegetation formations of a corridor traced between Quito and Vilcabamba, with side trips to the Cloud Forest on the eastern slopes. During the trip, we had brief evening gatherings to identify some of the readily described flowers up to level of genus. We photographed flowers belonging to 184 genera and 74 families. Among them, I identified 220 flowers to the species level. These 220 species included 34 plants endemic to Ecuador, 55 specialties unique to Ecuador and either Colombia or Peru, and 16 species only available in the territory covered by the three countries. In the end, our 14 day adventure generated a list of 105 range restricted flowering plants identified to species, which can be seen only in the Andes of either Ecuador or its neighbouring countries. Most of them occurr in habitats which also represent a reduced extension of native vegetation, for example: the Andean Paramos and the Dry Inter-Andean Valleys. -

STANDLEY The logical position of the RepubHc of Panama as a center for edu- cational work has been recognized throughout the American countries ever since work was begun upon the Panama Canal. It is therefore particularly appropriate that there should be established here in the Canal Zone a laboratory for tropical research in the biological sciences. On April 17, 1923, Barro Colorado Island, in Gatun Lake, was set aside by the Governor of the Canal Zone as a permanent reservation, to preserve in a primitive state the animal and plant life of the region. This result was accomplished largely through the personal interest and effort of Dr. Thomas Barbour and Mr. James Zetek, the latter now resident custodian of the island. Through the persevering efifort of these two persons, also, there has been constructed upon the island a commodious and substantial labora- tory with ample living quarters, in which one may enjoy every bodily comfort while carrying on investigations of the highly diversified fauna and flora. Although secluded from the distractions of such towns as Colon and Panama, one is within easy reach of their con- veniences. From the windows of the laboratory, situated at the top of a high, steep slope, one may see all day long an ever-changing pro- cession of the world's ships, passing almost before the door. -
