Moraski*, M.D. On the cover — The daily ritual of “turning the page” of the Saint John’s Bible Message from the Vice President and Chief Development Officer Dear Friends, Each year when I write my annual letter to you, I am so moved by how extremely fortunate we are to have such generous donors and friends. Your gifts and support have helped to feed the hungry, renovate patient floors, provide state-of-the-art equipment, and invest in vital research and clinical expertise…just to name a few. I often hear patients tell me that we have “lifted their souls in a time when they felt so vulnerable and hopeless.” That is when I know we have accomplished our mission. Throughout our annual donor recognition publication, you will hear from our donors on how and why they support our hospitals. You will see the impact their gifts have on the lives of our friends, family, and more than 300,000 patients. For fiscal year-end 2019, the Saint Francis Foundation raised over $15 million for Johnson Memorial Hospital, Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital and Saint Francis Hospital. These gifts come in all sizes and many different forms, but together they symbolize hope. In fiscal year 2019, we received many generous gifts and we are grateful to the Andrew J. and Joyce D. Mandell Family Foundation whose recent gift of $1.5 million helped establish a collaboration with the University of Oxford, Quinnipiac University, Trinity Health Of New England, and the Mandell MS Center. Their gift will allow our hospitals to optimize and enhance patient care and establish unparalleled research and educational opportunities. We are also deeply grateful for the gift of $1 million from the Maximilian E. and Marion O. Hoffman Foundation to renovate our Congestive Heart Failure patient floor. These gifts, coupled with our steadfast annual donors, corporate partners, and many event participants, allow our hospitals to continue to serve our community with compassion and excellence. On behalf of John F. Rodis, M.D., M.B.A., Robert J. Krug, M.D., and Stuart E. Rosenberg, M.B.A., we hope you enjoy this issue of Profiles in Caring, and we remain blessed to have your continued devotion and support for our hospitals. Warmly, Lynn B. Rossini Vice President and Chief Development Officer Saint Francis Foundation 2019 Profiles in Caring • Fiscal Year 2018–2019 1 Maximilian E. and Marion O. Hoffman Foundation FAMILY FOUNDATION Family Foundations work together to have a meaningful and measurable impact on social problems. They also have a unique purpose…to serve as a unified vehicle for multiple generations. The Maximilian E. and Marion O. Hoffman Foundation Inc. in West Hartford, Connecticut, was established in 1982 by Marion Hoffman in memory of her husband. The organization’s mission is to donate to nonprofits that further education, medicine and the arts. Since 1990, the Foundation has generously granted over $9 million to Saint Francis Hospital. Marion Barrak, niece of Marion Hoffman, assumed Dr. and Mrs. Bechara J. Barrak the role as president and CEO of the Foundation in 2006. Her father, Dr. Bahij Chaho, was affiliated with Saint Francis Hospital and her husband, Dr. Bechara Barrak, has been an internist at the hospital since 1992. When Marion was asked why they continue to support Saint Francis Hospital, she stated, “Our initial grant of $2 million was used to establish the Hoffman Heart Institute, the first comprehensive heart institute in southern New England. Since then, the level of care and compassion for the patients has never wavered, and we are grateful to be partners with an organization with such values.” This year, the Maximilian E. & Marion O. Hoffman Foundation awarded Saint Francis Hospital a $1M gift to renovate the ... we are grateful to be Congestive Heart Failure Unit. The newly renovated unit will be partners with an organization named the “Maximilian E. & Marion O. Hoffman Congestive Heart with such values. Failure Pavilion.” Congestive heart failure is the leading cause of hospitalization in people over age 65. Annually, Saint Francis Marion Barrak Hospital serves over 2,000 patients in the Congestive Heart Failure Unit and this number continues to rise each year. The new center will incorporate prevention, wellness, and rehabilitation services along with top specialists and state-of-the-art technology. Research has shown that hospital environments have a positive or negative effect on healing. The unit will have private rooms, calming environments, and other amenities that enhance the emotional support patients receive. Saint Francis Hospital is thrilled to be able to utilize these funds as a means to create a new, soothing, and comfortable environment for its congestive heart failure patients to complement the medical care our patients receive while they are hospitalized. 2 www.saintfrancisdonor.com Mr. and Mrs. Karl J. Krapek, Sr. STOCK GIFT Individuals can make a bigger impact on patient care by donating long-term appreciated securities, including stock, bonds, and mutual funds, directly to a charity. When compared with donating cash, or selling appreciated securities and contributing the after-tax proceeds, donors may be able to automatically increase their gift and their tax deduction. This process is very easy and can have a huge impact on the area of care most important to you. For almost 40 years, long-time board member, Karl J. Krapek, Sr., has been an inspiring leader, astute advisor, energetic advocate and generous friend to Saint Francis Hospital. Most recently Karl served as a co-chair for the Hope & Healing Campaign, helping the hospital raise close to $30 million. Karl was employed at United Technologies Corporation for 20 years, serving in many executive roles culminating with his tenure as president and chief operating officer from 1999 until his retirement in January 2002. Throughout his career, he felt blessed with good luck and was compelled to do the right thing and help as many people as possible. His association with Saint Francis Hospital continued that theme with the simple conclusion: if the hospital prospers, so will the community. Karl’s multi-million dollar stock gifts created the Karl J. Krapek, Sr. Comprehensive Women’s Health Center at Saint Francis. Karl and Kathy Krapek believe strongly in giving back to the community they live in and are instrumental in changing the lives of many patients and their families that are cared for at Saint Francis Hospital. Each year they donate appreciated stock and their gifts have an immeasurable impact on the care Saint Francis Hospital is able to provide. ‘GOODNIGHT FOR JUSTICE: QUEEN OF HEARTS’ PRODUCTION BIOS LUKE PERRY (Executive Producer) – In 1989, Luke Perry was chosen for a starring role on the internationally popular television series “Beverly Hills 90210,” in which he portrayed the brooding but sensitive Dylan McCay. The highly-rated program won a Golden Globe Award for Best Dramatic Television series in 1991. Perry made his feature film debut in a starring role in “8 Seconds,” the remarkable account of champion bull rider Lane Frost, which he co-produced. Other film credits include Columbia’s “Fifth Element”, directed by Luc Besson, “Riot for Showtime,” “Normal Life,” “American Strays” and “The Florentine,” in which he co-starred with Chris Penn, Jim Belushi, Michael Madsen and Mary Stuart Masterson. Perry made his debut on Broadway in the critically acclaimed musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show, where he portrayed Brad, the character originally played by Barry Bostwick in the cult film classic. In 2004, Perry appeared onstage in London opposite Allyson Hannigan in When Harry Met Sally. Not one to be typecast because of his work on “90210,” Perry’s television credits include a myriad of roles, including a lead in the NBC drama “Windfall,” HBO’s “John From Cincinnati,” starring for two seasons on “Jeremiah,” the Showtime Network sci-fi series, a multi-episode arc on HBO’s critically acclaimed series “Oz,” in which he portrayed a televangelist convicted of fraud, as well as roles in Hallmark Channel productions “Johnson County War,” “Supernova,” “A Gunfighter’s Pledge” and “Angel and the Badman.” Perry starred in “Goodnight for Justice,” Hallmark Movie Channel’s highest rated movie of all time.

Jacques Lacan I hate a movie that will end by telling you that the first thing you should do is learn to love yourself. That is so insulting and condescending, and so meaningless. My characters don't learn to love each other or themselves. Charlie Kaufman Look Like Yourself Is it particularly important that it is Matt Le Blanc playing himself in Episodes? No, not really. If I know things about Matt and Joey (the character who Matt played on Friends from 1994-2004 and on Joey from 2004-2006) I am rewarded with jokes here and there, but often the details of these actor’s lives are actually irrelevant to the storyline. When people play themselves, what matters most is not that they are themselves, but that they are a specific kind of an actor.

The study begins by examining the formation of social dancing into a specific brand of commercial entertainment in association with the popularity of Vernon and Irene Castle as social dancing entertainers around 1914. The Castles branded social dancing as a modern form of leisure through their exhibitions of social dancing in public, through products that were marketed with their name, in a book of illustrations for “Modern Dancing” (1914), and through Whirl of Life (1915), a film they produced about the origination of their romance and popularity as dancing entertainers.
