    Feminine Features as Political Tools: The Cases of Femen and Women of Liberia1 Rasgos femeninos como herramientas políticas: los casos de Femen y Mujeres de Liberia Gabriela Caviedes2 Universidad de los Andes (Chile) Recibido: 30-11-16 Aprobado: 07-01-17 Abstract This paper is an analysis of the different ways in which feminism can be understood, using as examples the cases of the feminist movements Femen and Women of Liberia. Both are distinguished by using feminine features as political tools, and both have been an issue of interest for audiovisual productions. Each one is the main subject of two documentaries: Ukraine is not a Brothel, that concerns Femen movement; and Pray the Devil Back to Hell, that concerns Women of Liberia movement. I shall use this material in order to present each. After presenting them I will analyze them in light of the definition and division of feminism that Karen Offen, scholar of the University of California, does. I will then conclude that Femen is an example of what she calls ‘individualistic feminism’, and Women of Liberia an example of what she named ‘relational feminism’. I will also conclude that the political position they achieve is also due to the branch of feminism they represent.     The Woman-Slave Analogy: Rhetorical Foundations in American Culture, 1830-1900 Ana Lucette Stevenson BComm (dist.), BA (HonsI) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2014 School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics I Abstract During the 1830s, Sarah Grimké, the abolitionist and women’s rights reformer from South Carolina, stated: “It was when my soul was deeply moved at the wrongs of the slave that I first perceived distinctly the subject condition of women.” This rhetorical comparison between women and slaves – the woman-slave analogy – emerged in Europe during the seventeenth century, but gained peculiar significance in the United States during the nineteenth century. This rhetoric was inspired by the Revolutionary Era language of liberty versus tyranny, and discourses of slavery gained prominence in the reform culture that was dominated by the American antislavery movement and shared among the sisterhood of reforms. The woman-slave analogy functioned on the idea that the position of women was no better – nor any freer – than slaves. It was used to critique the exclusion of women from a national body politic based on the concept that “all men are created equal.” From the 1830s onwards, this analogy came to permeate the rhetorical practices of social reformers, especially those involved in the antislavery, women’s rights, dress reform, suffrage and labour movements. Sarah’s sister, Angelina, asked: “Can you not see that women could do, and would do a hundred times more for the slave if she were not fettered?” My thesis explores manifestations of the woman-slave analogy through the themes of marriage, fashion, politics, labour, and sex.

Brewer MANHATTAN BOROUGH PRESIDENT Brewer_WomensHistory_Final.indd 1 2/25/20 4:08 PM One Hundred Years of Voting A century has passed since American suffragists girded for their final push to win the ballot for women in every corner of the United States. Under the skilled and persistent direction of Carrie Chapman Catt, and spurred by the energy of Alice Paul’s National Woman Party, the 19th Amendment won approval on August 26, 1920. In this pamphlet, we find reminders of the struggles and achievements of New York women who spoke, marched, and even fought for the vote and the full panoply of rights. These were women who marched to Albany in the winter, or demonstrators who were jailed for their protests in Washington. Crystal Eastman, a young activist, spoke a large truth when she said, after ratification, “Now we can begin.” To complete one task is to encounter the next. The BiblioMara bibliography contains material that has been written down which relates to the lives of the people on the coast; today and in the past; their history and language; and the way that the sea has affected their way of life and their imagination. The bibliography attempts to list as many materials as possible that deal with the myriad interactions between people and their maritime surroundings. The island of Ireland and aspects of coastal life are covered, from lobster pot making to the uses of seaweed, from the fate of the Spanish Armada to the future of wave energy, from the sailing schooner fleets of Arklow to the County Down herring girls, from Galway hookers to the songs of Tory Islanders.

O ministro do Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF) Alexandre de Moraes mandou soltar a ativista Sara Fernanda Geromini, conhecida como Sara Winter. Ela está presa no presídio feminino do Distrito Federal desde a semana passada. O ministro aceitou o pedido da Polícia Federal (PF) e da Procuradoria-Geral da República (PGR) para substituir a prisão por medidas cautelares, como uso de tornozeleira eletrônica, proibição de manter contato com outros investigados e manter um quilômetro de distância do Congresso Nacional e do STF. Na segunda-feira (15), Sara foi presa pela PF por determinação do ministro Alexandre de Moraes, a pedido da PGR na investigação que apura ataques a instituições, como pedidos de intervenção militar e o fechamento do Congresso e do Supremo. A ativista já foi denunciada pela Procuradoria da República no Distrito Federal pelos crimes de injúria e ameaça ao ministro. A ministra Cármen Lúcia na semana passada negou um habeas corpus para libertar a ativista. Na petição, a defesa alegou que houve abuso de poder e ilegalidade na decretação da prisão. Para os advogados, Sara é vítima de perseguição política. “Se pessoas condenadas por tráfico de drogas podem ser beneficiadas por HC [habeas corpus] para ficarem em prisão domiciliar com seus filhos menores, qual o motivo a ora paciente deverá, duplamente, permanecer encarcerada, se não cometeu crime algum, não é condenada, não é autoridade com foro de prerrogativa, e possui um filho de 5 anos de idade?”, questionou a defesa no STF.

The members of the convention were urban, white, Protestant and different from the general population. The city of Worcester's population was much more diverse. Within the membership group it was found that they were not all of the same socio-economic background. By dividing the one group into three categories--antislavery organizers, women, and men--the study found that there were working class as well as upper and middle class individuals at the convention. The class diversity occurred almost wholly among women. The bulk of the research of this study was conducted at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Massachusetts. By many accounts, there has been a Gaeilge renaissance underway in recent times. The number of Gaeilge-medium primary and secondary schools (Gaelscoileanna) has grown throughout the 1990s and into the twenty-first century, the year 2003 saw the passage of the Official Languages Act (laying the groundwork to assure all public services would be made available in Gaeilge as well as English), and as of January 2007 Gaeilge has become a working language of the European Union.
