Quinze ans plus tard, alors que sa vie a changé, alors que son couple n'est plus ce qu'il était, elle décide de rééditer cet ouvrage, ajoutant quelques pages " d'actualisation ". Parce qu'elle ressent toujours le même besoin de témoigner. Parce qu'elle croit toujours, malgré les vicissitudes de l'existence, à la force de l'amour. Parce qu'elle veut continuer à entretenir la flamme de la fraternité humaine au milieu des tempêtes racistes et ou intégristes. Thérèse Abdelaziz, avec son mari et leurs enfants a fait partie, d'une certaine manière, d'une génération de " pionniers ". Rimbaud actualise la légende afin d'illustrer une autre résistance : celle de l'émir Abdelkader en lutte contre les Français. Malmenant le double mythe de l'Afrique romaine et de l'Algérie française avec humour, le poète est l'un des premiers Français à reconnaître le fait national algérien ; Rimbaud prend le parti de l'Algérie contre la France ! Et puis, dans l'imaginaire rimbaldien, l'Algérie est l'espace fantasmé investi d'une puissance émotionnelle : celle du père absent. Ce père qui, chef du Bureau arabe à Sebdou, aurait été témoin des dernières chevauchées de l'émir Abdelkader, et qui, en tout cas, fut le catalyseur de la fascination de son fils pour l'Afrique et l'Orient. L'Algérie a nourri l'univers poétique de Rimbaud qui, à son tour, a laissé des traces dans la poésie algérienne et arabe. The primary o~jec­ tive of this study is to illustrate the role that political events in Rome during the Jugurthine War played in transforming the Republic into the Principate. THE NEW PANATHENAIC VICTOR LISTS FINDSPOT, DESCRIPTION, AND TEXT The present inscription (pp. 188-189) listing athletic victors in the Panathenaia first came to my attention a number of years ago by word of mouth.1 I do not have accurate information about its initial discovery. The stone was initially under the jurisdiction of Dr. George Dontas, who helped me gain accessto it and determinethat no one was working on it. My own interest in the inscriptionin the first place stemmedfrom the hand. With the assistance of the Greek authorities, especially the two (former) directorsof the Akropolis, G. Dontas and E. Touloupa, whose generous cooperationI gratefully acknowledge,I have been granted permission to publish this important inscription.2In October of 1989 I was able to study the text in situ and also to make a squeeze and photographs.3 I In a joint article it is particularly important to indicate who did what. DeMonto Master of Arts in History San Diego State University, 2015 Previous examinations of Roman imperialism in North Africa are insufficient because they lack an appreciation of the balance between the defensive, political, and economic motives. These past arguments have focused on specific regions around the Mediterranean world, but have failed to include North Africa – an integral part of the Roman Empire. This region was politically and economically integrated into the empire during the first century CE. This study closely examines the ancient sources for Roman imperialism in North Africa from 300 BCE to 100 CE to construct the narrative for Roman imperialism while juxtaposing corresponding ancient and archaeological evidence. This study examines the ancient and modern constructed narratives against anthropological models for interstate warfare and cooperation. The ancient written sources include Polybius’s Histories, Livy’s Ab Urbe Condita and Periochae, Appian’s Roman History, Dio Cassius’s Roman History, Sallust’s Jugurthine War, Julius Caesar’s De Africo Bello, Velleius Paterculus’s Roman History, Augustus’s Res Gestae Divi Augusti, Tacitus’s Annals and Histories, and Pliny the Elder’s Natural Histories.

While demonstrably endemic in and seemingly generic to Africa, the ancient history of corruption depicts active participation of Western accomplices; collaborators, who perpetrated and advanced their political interests with the proceeds of sleaze. This article, using the Roman historian Sallust’s Bellum Iugurthinum (The War with Jugurtha), employs interpretive approach to highlight how an African monarch was spurred on by corrupt leading Roman senator, who treated public assets as personal property, to recklessly pursue his political ambition. The article highlighted how Roman soldiers introduced the use of money in seeking power to Jugurtha and the stages of the former’s duplicity in the prolonged African conflicts. With evidence to support Jugurtha’s description of Rome in her corrupt state as ‘urbem venalem et mature perituram, si emptorem invenerit’ (a city for sale and doomed to speedy destruction if it finds a purchaser- Sallust, Jugurthine War 35.10), the conclusion is: the African ruler got in the Roman senate a viral school of bribery. Interestingly, the episode of corruption ended when the will of the corrupt Roman senators was thwarted.
