KAMAMICA THEATRE COMPANY - 30TH ANNIVERSARY This year, local amateur theatre group ‘Kamamica’ celebrate their 30th anniversary with performances of ‘Godspell’ at Harrogate Theatre, The Playhouse, Pateley Bridge and Neuadd Dyfi, Aberdovey, Wales. Godspell first opened in London in 1971. After a successful 900 performances in the West End (the cast included David Essex, Robert Lindsay, Marti Webb and Jeremy Irons) it was released for amateur performances in 1972. In Harrogate, Kamamica was formed by a group of friends to give a one-off performance at Rossett High School. Encouraged by the enthusiasm of their audience they then performed at Boroughbridge, Ripon, Brighouse, locally at Trinity Methodist Church and eventually at Harrogate Theatre. Based on the Gospel of St Matthew, this rock musical is funny, sad, lively and moving - with a memorable score of well-known songs. Andrew Manley, Director at Harrogate Theatre, urged the group to continue working together. They took his advice and have since produced an annual musical or comedy. This included productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Little Shop of Horrors, Chorus Line, Cabaret, Chess, Blondel, Return to the Forbidden Planet, Slice of Saturday Night, ‘Allo ‘Allo and Hay Fever. Kamamica also go out carol singing at Christmas and since the Millenium have raised over £11,000 for local charities. The group’s limited resources mean minimum rehearsals and smaller venues. Scenery and costumes are made by the cast and the production relies on the total commitment and dedication of their small company. ‘Godspell’ is Kamamica’s favourite musical. Aberdovey is the favourite beach holiday of most of the cast. In this anniversary year it seemed very appropriate to match the two together. Hence the performance at Neuadd Dyfi on Sunday 5th August. Tickets are available from Dovey Marine, Copper Hill Street from 1st July. .
