Driessen Faculty Sponsor: Scott Dickmeyer, Department of Communication Studies ABSTRACT Advertising is a frequently used influential and persuasive means of communication, especially on teens and young adults. Abercrombie and Fitch is a corporation whose advertising methods have been controversial because of the profound effect its message has on the target audience of teens and young adults. Research found Abercrombie and Fitch used its new campaign to communicate four prevalent messages: The look of an Abercrombie & Fitch Person, The one and only Abercrombie & Fitch, The Abercrombie & Fitch life of luxury, and Not making the Abercrombie & Fitch cut. These messages were communicated through numerous venues, and persuaded consumers to purchase the products through identification with the Abercrombie & Fitch image. Keywords: content analysis, message communication, Abercrombie & Fitch, identification INTRODUCTION Less than one year ago Abercrombie & Fitch decided to remove its main form of advertising, the magalog A&F Quarterly, from the market. The controversy created around this company’s advertising is intriguing. The way a company communicates its image to consumers is an interesting method of message communication. Image by itself is “multidimensional constructs containing cognitive and emotional elements” (p. 86). Corporate image also includes “the extent to which each marketing instrument contributes to the brand image and the extent to which that image enhances desired economic behavior of markets” (p.83). Additionally it encompasses “the quality of management, corporate leadership, and employee orientation” (Haedrich, 1993, p.83). This research study will examine the messages communicated to sell the Abercrombie and Fitch image, this will be done by analyzing the messages sent through Abercrombie & Fitch’s advertising and how these messages are packaged.

The Ministry of Truth — which dictates news, entertainment, education, and the arts — uses large, ubiquitous two-way telescreens to broadcast propaganda and monitor citizens’ activities.     VOL. 51 • NO. 0 Special Issue 2011 000 From Silos to Synergy: A Fifty-year Review of Cross-media Research Shows Synergy Has Yet to Achieve its Full Potential Henry ASSAel Five critical take-aways from 50 years of cross-media research: • The technology resulting in the proliferation of media has outstripped the means to measure cross- media effectiveness. • The promise of cross-media research will not be achieved until cross-media effectiveness can be linked to sales and ROI. Until that is achieved, cross-media research will continue to have a silo orientation and operate on the periphery of marketing planning. • Cross-media exposure is not a zero-sum game. Exposure to one medium does not mean less exposure to another. • Maximizing cross-media synergy requires allocating proportionately more money to the less effective medium to equalize the impact of both. Rather than reallocate the budget to the less effective medium, under conditions of synergy, advertisers should increase the total media budget. • Greater cross-media synergies appear to be achieved through the visual/verbal connection provided by TV and the Web than the verbal only connection provided by print and the Web.     CHAPTER – I CONCEPT AND HISTORY OF ADVERTISING Meaning: The term advertising is derived from the Latin word, „advertere‟ which means to turn attention towards a specific thing.1 Advertising simply means a public announcement. But, nowadays, the functions of advertisements go beyond announcements as they persuade the prospective buyer, remind the existing buyers, create demand, brand preference and brand loyalty; apart from neutralising the effects of the advertisements of the competitors. Advertising is aimed at a group of persons and not an individual. These groups of persons are not the general public; but the target audience who are also the potential customers. In advertising, unlike personal selling, immediate feedback cannot be taken. Thus, it is a paid form of non-personal way of communication with a group of target audience through mass media like television, newspapers, magazines, radio, internet et al. Definitions: 1. American Marketing Association: Advertising is a paid form of non-personal presentation and promotion of goods, services or ideas by an identified sponsor.2 2. Philip Kotler: Advertising is a non-personal form of communication conducted through paid media under clear sponsorship.3 3. John J. Myers: Advertising is dissemination of information concerning an idea, service or product to compel action in accordance with the interest of the advertiser.4 4. John Kennedy: Advertising is the substitute of human salesman.5 5. Selling The American People: Data, Technology, And The Calculated Transformation Of Advertising Abstract This dissertation tells the history of a future imagined by advertisers as they interpreted and constructed the affordances of digital information technologies. It looks at how related efforts to predict and influence consumer habits and to package and sell audience attention helped orchestrate the marriage of behavioral science and big-data analytics that defines digital marketing today. My research shows how advertising and commercial media industries rebuilt their information infrastructures around electronic data processing, networked computing, and elaborate forms of quantitative analysis, beginning in the 1950s. Advertisers, agencies, and media companies accommodated their activities to increasingly calculated ways of thinking about consumers and audiences, and to more statistical and computational forms of judgement. Responding to existing priorities and challenges, and to perceived opportunities to move closer to underlying ambitions, a variety of actors envisioned the future of marketing and media through a set of possibilities that became central to the commercialization of digital communications.

Jennifer Palm ARTE 703 Dr. Ivashkevich November 30, 2011 IDENTITY AND SELF-IMAGE DEVELOPMENT Introduction Advertising plays a major role in the construction, maintenance, and representation of adolescent’s identity and self-image. In our culture we are bombarded from childhood to adulthood by toys, television, magazines, billboards, music videos, video games, and the internet, which saturate us with images of ideal “attractiveness, beauty, shape, weight, size, and strength.” (Croll, 2002) Advertisers use these “models of perfection”, along with gender stereotyping, racial profiling, and sex-role conventions to sell products to their target audience. These ideals of unrealistic perfection have been increasingly marketed at adolescents since the 1950’s and as a result young people are developing identity confusion and negative self-images, which puts a considerable amount of adolescents on the track to depression, drug abuse, and eating disorders when they feel that they cannot live up to society’s standards. It must be noted that at this point in their lives adolescents are constantly asking the question, “Who am I?” (Nakkula,N.J. & Toshalis,E., 2006), therefore, this is a crucial period in their lives where young people must be provided with the tools to critically analyze corporate advertising and consumer culture in order to develop a positive self-image and identity framework. In this unit students will not only be analyzing the tools used by corporations to sell products, they will be deconstructing advertisements in order to discover how information flows, how meaning is created in our society, how corporations wield power, and how this effects the construction of their own identity and self-image as well as that of their peers.

Beard Gaylord College, University of Oklahoma, USA Abstract Purpose – When advertising historians began searching for substantial collections and archives of historical advertisements and marketing ephemera in the 1970s, some reported such holdings were rare. This paper reports the findings of the first systematic attempt to assess the scope and research value of the world’s archives and collections devoted to advertising and marketing ephemera. Approach – Searches of the holdings of museums, libraries, and the Internet led to the identification and description of 175 archives and collections of historical significance for historians of marketing and advertising, as well as researchers interested in many other topics and disciplines. Limitations – The search continued until a point of redundancy was reached and no new archives or collections meeting the search criteria emerged. There remains the likelihood, however, that other archives and collections exist, especially in non-Western countries. Contribution – The lists of archives and collections resulting from the research reported in this paper represent the most complete collection of such sources available. Identified are the world’s oldest and largest collections of advertising and ephemera. Also identified are quite extraordinary collections of historically unique records and artifacts. The findings make valuable contributions to the work of historians and other scholars by encouraging more global and cross-cultural research and historical analyses of trends and themes in professional practices in marketing and advertising and their consequences over a longer period than previously studied.
