  • 1914/1918 : Nos Anciens Et Le Développement De L' Aviation

Fly Historical Works of Art... These 1/5-scale ARF R/C aircraft are finished to a level that impresses even skilled model builders. All aircraft are conventional balsa and plywood construction, covered with a heat shrink fabric from Solarfilm. Rigging wires are factory assembled to the proper length. Where applicable, metal engine cowls and complete pull-pull systems are included for the elevator, rudder and aileron controls. Main landing gear, tail struts and scale wheels are factory assembled. For static display only, a wooden dummy engine and 2-blade scale propeller with front plate are included. Where possible KAVAN hardware is used in the models. Assembly instructions, flying hints and scale documentation is in English. Some models also include a German instruction. Most of the work is completed at the factory as the "Kit content" pictures show. Wires, tumbuckles and assembly hardware are included but not shown. The other aircraft are finished to the same level. Display models are available by special order. Two levels Kit content Phönix D-III, Austria-Hungary of detail are offered, Ready Not for Flying (RNF) and Museum Quality (MQ). These models have no provisions for installing an R/C engine and radio system. Asian and American interior decorators are a major customer of the Display models (RNF). Please contact KAVAN for price and delivery. Three models are NOT available for R/C flight (ARF). • The Voisin Biplane by Robert G
THE VOISIN BIPLANE BY ROBERT G. WALDVOGEL A single glance at the Voisin Biplane reveals exactly what one would expect of a vintage aircraft: a somewhat ungainly design with dual, fabric-covered wings; a propeller; an aerodynamic surface protruding ahead of its airframe; and a boxy, kite-resembling tail. But, by 1907 standards, it had been considered “advanced.” Its designer, Gabriel Voisin, son of a provincial engineer, was born in Belleville, France, in 1880, initially demonstrating mechanical and aeronautical aptitude through his boat, automobile, and kite interests. An admirer of Clement Ader, he trained as an architect and draftsman at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, and was later introduced to Ernest Archdeacon, a wealthy lawyer and aviation enthusiast, who subsequently commissioned him to design a glider. Using inaccurate and incomplete drawings of the Wright Brothers’ 1902 glider published in L’Aerophile, the Aero-Club’s journal, Voisin constructed an airframe in January of 1904 which only bore a superficial resemblance to its original. Sporting dual wings subdivided by vertical partitions, a forward elevating plane, and a two-cell box-kite tail, it was devoid of the Wright-devised wing- warping method, and therefore had no means by which lateral control could be exerted. Two-thirds the size of the original, it was 40 pounds lighter. Supported by floats and tethered to a Panhard-engined racing boat, the glider attempted its first fight from the Seine River on June 8, 1905, as described by Voisin himself. “Gradually and cautiously, (the helmsman) took up the slack of my towing cable…” he had written.

CROUCH National Air and Space Museum THE HARMON MEMORIAL LECTURES IN MILITARY HISTORY NUMBER FORTY-SIX United States Air Force Academy Colorado 2003 3 THE HARMON LECTURES IN MILITARY HISTORY The oldest and most prestigious lecture series at the Air Force Academy, the Harmon Memorial Lectures in Military History originated with Lieutenant General Hubert R. Harmon, the Academy's first superintendent (1954-1956) and a serious student of military history. General Harmon believed that history should play a vital role in the new Air Force Academy curriculum. Meeting with the History Department on one occasion, he described General George S. Patton, Jr.'s visit to the West Point library before departing for the North African campaign. In a flurry of activity Patton and the librarians combed the West Point holdings for historical works that might be useful to him in the coming months. Impressed by Patton's regard for history and personally convinced of history's great value, General Harmon believed that cadets should study the subject during each of their four years at the Academy. General Harmon fell ill with cancer soon after launching the Air Force Academy at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver in 1954. He died in February 1957. He had completed a monumental task over the preceding decade as the chief planner for the new service academy and as its first superintendent.

  • Short History of Brazilian Aeronautics
Proceedings of the 11th Brazilian Congress of Thermal Sciences and Engineering -- ENCIT 2006 Braz. Soc. of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering -- ABCM, Curitiba, Brazil,- Dec. 5-8, 2006 Paper CIT06-0458 A Brief History of Brazilian Aeronautics Bento Silva de Mattos Technological Institute of Aeronautics – São José dos Campos – São Paulo - Brazil [email protected] Abstract. The history of aeronautics is the history of the technological development spiced by the enterprising spirit of aviation pioneers. The flight revolution was largely a product of technology and not so much of science. Its practitioners followed the tradition of the craftsmen and technicians who, awakened by the experimental method of Sir Francis Bacon and others, were the proto-engineers of the great expansion of technology and engineering that happened from the time of the Industrial Revolution onwards. Its first great accomplishment was the re-invention of lighter-than-air flight in 1783. Some time before the Brazilian Jesuit Bartolomeu de Gusmão make flew an unmanned small balloon in Portugal. By the mid-1790’s, the balloon had already been turned to practical benefit, as an observation system; it appeared as a scientific lifting platform shortly afterwards. The quest for steerable flight led to the creation of practical, small airships by the end of the 19th century, and the larger rigid airship appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, almost simultaneously with the appearance of the airplane. An overview of milestone events that marked the history of aeronautics worldwide is presented in its early days. The major achievements by the Brazilian Santos-Dumont are also described and analyzed as well as the major events in the Brazilian Aeronautics history.
