Guido Tigler Frammento di pluteo a intreccio di nastri concentrici Italia centro-settentrionale, IX secolo. Materiale: marmo Proconnesio probabilmente di spoglio. Misure: cm 53 x 58 x 9. Stato di conservazione: forte appiattimento da consunzione1. Prima della recente pulitura gli incavi erano riempiti di malta, da ricondurre ad un riuso della lastra come materiale edilizio, probabilmente in una pavimentazione. Provenienza: collezione privata. La lastra frammentaria, che presenta due lati contigui rettilinei disposti ad angolo retto, tuttora delimitati da bordi piatti (mentre gli altri due lati sono irregolari ed evidentemente risultato di frantumazione), costituiva una parte angolare di un pluteo alto circa un metro, in cui lo stesso modulo, formato da nastri concentrici annodati fra di loro, veniva replicato almeno quattro volte, come si vede in casi confrontabili, fra i quali ve ne sono alcuni del tutto o parzialmente conservati in cui il modulo circolare è ripetuto anche nove volte, come a Torino (fig. 25), dodici, come a Santa Sabina a Roma (fig. 11), San Marco a Venezia (fig. 36) e in un pluteo già nella collezione Dal Zotto a Venezia (fig. 38), quattordici o più volte, come in un pluteo frammentario di Ferentino (fig. 16), e addirittura diciotto volte, come in uno a Spalato (fig. 42). L’uso del marmo Proconnesio, che è stato verificato dal giudizio di un esperto, deporrebbe a favore di una provenienza dall’area adriatica della penisola, dove questo materiale dell’isola di Marmara, lavorato prima a Nicomedia e poi a Costantinopoli, da dove veniva importato in Italia e altrove, è stato più spesso impiegato, anche se sporadicamente lo si è portato nell’Antichità pure sul versante tirrenico, e comunque si può dare per scontato che esso sia stato qui riciclato da un pezzo, eventualmente resecato, già usato precedentemente. -

A Changing Mosaic: Multicultural Exchange in the Norman Palaces of Twelfth-Century Sicily by Dana Katz A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Art University of Toronto © Copyright by Dana Katz 2016 A Changing Mosaic: Multicultural Exchange in the Norman Palaces of Twelfth-Century Sicily by Dana Katz Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Art University of Toronto 2016 Abstract This dissertation examines the twelfth-century residences associated with the Norman Hautevilles in the parklands that surrounded their capital at Palermo. One of the best-preserved ensembles of medieval secular architecture, the principal monuments are the palaces of La Zisa and La Cuba, the complexes of La Favara and Lo Scibene, the hunting lodge at Parco, and the palace at Monreale. The Norman conquest of Sicily in the previous century dramatically altered the local population’s religious and cultural identity. Nevertheless, an Islamic legacy persisted in the park architecture, arranged on axial plans with waterworks and ornamented with muqarnas vaults. By this time, the last Norman king, William II, and his court became aligned with contemporaries in the Latin West, and Muslims became marginalized in Sicily. Part One examines the modern “discovery” and reception of the twelfth-century palaces. As secular examples built in an Islamic mode, they did not fit preconceived paradigms of medieval Western architecture in the scholarly literature, greatly endangering their preservation. My examination reconstructs the vast landscape created by the Norman kings, who modified their surroundings on a monumental scale. Water in the parklands was harnessed to provide for ii artificial lakes and other waterscapes onto which the built environment was sited. -

A Hunyadi-impresa azonban, ellentétben a Mátyás királyéval, már nem került be az Aegidius Sadeler metszeteivel megjelent prágai emblémás könyvbe, jelezve, hogy tévedés volt az INVENISSIEM SI VIVISSEM mottót és kerek pajzsot ábrázoló impresát Hunyadinak tulajdonítani, ez ugyanis a korabeli emblematikai irodalom szerint Antonio Severino nápolyi nemesé volt. In order to account for the installation of the Franks on the Italian peninsula, our manuals have clung to a received vulgate. They assert that Pippin the Short and then Charlemagne allied themselves with the papacy, at the pope’s request, in order to stave off the Lombard threat against the Exarchate of Ravenna and defend the interests of the Holy See. But at the end of the tenth century, south of Rome, the story included other elements. -
Art and Politics at the Neapolitan Court of Ferrante I, 1458-1494
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: KING OF THE RENAISSANCE: ART AND POLITICS AT THE NEAPOLITAN COURT OF FERRANTE I, 1458-1494 Nicole Riesenberger, Doctor of Philosophy, 2016 Dissertation directed by: Professor Meredith J. Gill, Department of Art History and Archaeology In the second half of the fifteenth century, King Ferrante I of Naples (r. 1458-1494) dominated the political and cultural life of the Mediterranean world. His court was home to artists, writers, musicians, and ambassadors from England to Egypt and everywhere in between. Yet, despite its historical importance, Ferrante’s court has been neglected in the scholarship. This dissertation provides a long-overdue analysis of Ferrante’s artistic patronage and attempts to explicate the king’s specific role in the process of art production at the Neapolitan court, as well as the experiences of artists employed therein. By situating Ferrante and the material culture of his court within the broader discourse of Early Modern art history for the first time, my project broadens our understanding of the function of art in Early Modern Europe. I demonstrate that, contrary to traditional assumptions, King Ferrante was a sophisticated patron of the visual arts whose political circumstances and shifting alliances were the most influential factors contributing to his artistic patronage. Unlike his father, Alfonso the Magnanimous, whose court was dominated by artists and courtiers from Spain, France, and elsewhere, Ferrante differentiated himself as a truly Neapolitan king. Yet Ferrante’s court was by no means provincial. His residence, the Castel Nuovo in Naples, became the physical embodiment of his commercial and political network, revealing the accretion of local and foreign visual vocabularies that characterizes Neapolitan visual culture. -

Relatore Prof. Stefano Gasparri Laureanda Giulia Zornetta 811003 Anno Accademico 2011 / 2012 Introduzione L'oggetto della presente tesi è la persistenza e la trasformazione dell'identità longobarda nell'Italia meridionale, ovvero come la ricca tradizione del Regnum Langobardorum venga ripresa dopo il 774, cioè dopo la caduta di quest'ultimo nelle mani dei Franchi, dal ducato di Benevento e qui riabilitata, oltre che progressivamente trasformata, in funzione delle nuove esigenze – sociali e politiche – del Mezzogiorno longobardo. Questo processo ha dunque inizio con la seconda metà dell'VIII secolo ed arriva a compimento tra IX e X secolo, per poi archiviarsi definitivamente con la conquista normanna dell'Italia meridionale, avvenuta nel secolo XI per mano delle famiglie Drengot e, soprattutto, con gli Altavilla. A tale proposito si sono prese in esame essenzialmente tre tipologie di fonti, ovvero quelle cronachistiche da un lato e quelle documentarie e legislative dall'altro. EMW - Workshops EMW 2007 EARLY MODERN WORKSHOP: Jewish History Resources Volume 4: Jewish Consumption and Material Culture in the Early Modern Period, 2007, University of Maryland Symbolic Clothes Marginality and otherness of Jews and New Christians as Reflected by Their Dress in Two Christian texts Nadia Zeldes, The Hebrew University, Mandel Institute for Jewish Studies, Jerusalem, Israel ABSTRACT: Clothes in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period denoted legal status and social standing. Jews (and other minority and marginal groups) were distinguished by clothing regulations, sometimes supplemented by the wearing of a special badge. However, beyond custom and law, there were subtle cues that signaled marginality such as the wearing of certain fabrics and colours etc. In Mediterranean Europe, that is in Italy, Sicily and the Iberian kingdoms, Jews wore more or less the same fashions as the surrounding society though there were restrictions and distinguishing marks imposed by either the ruler and the Church or the Jews themselves. A text from fifteenth century Sicily describes the clothes worn by Jews during a festive procession; but beyond the explicit information it provides, the text’s language and the subtext hint at the marginality and restrictions imposed on the Jews. Converting to Christianity meant, according to Church doctrine as well as missionary propaganda, total status change and no restrictions on dress, exercising various professions etc. However, a sixteenth century text - also from Sicily - raises intriguing question as to the perceptions of the New Christians by the Old Christian population, especially regarding dress. I would like to analyze both texts, comparing them to each other and to other sources from the same period.
