Ben There, Dan That! / Time Gentlemen, Please! Even though Sierra and LucasArts gave up on adventure games around the turn of the century, there are still those who hold on to the belief that the genre is very much alive. But without the continuation of games like Monkey Island, Space Quest and Simon the Sorcerer, what we have are, mostly, legions of humorless entries with depressingly dry CG backgrounds, plus the occasional cartoonish adventure that tries to be funny but fails spectacularly. Former adventure creators still make some great work, of course. Tim Schaefer, of Grim Fandango, spent a long time working on Psychonauts and Brütal Legend, both of which were hilarious despite not being adventure games, while Telltale, formed with some of the other LucasArts staff, comes close to the glory days of the genre. But it‟s not quite the same. So it was more or less out of nowhere that a tiny group of Brits called Zombie Cow Studios brought out two of the funniest adventures since... well, since ever, perhaps. Ben There, Dan That! and its sequel, Time Gentlemen Please!, are both low budget hits made with Adventure Game Studio and have a graphical style most consistent with elementary school notebook doodles, but succeed tremendously because they‟re so brilliantly written. One could call it “The British version of South Park!” and that wouldn‟t entirely be wrong, but that‟s a glib summation of it. While both creations have uber low-fi visuals, subversive plotting, and more than just a bit of toilet humor, Zombie Cow‟s games replace South Park's libertarian cynicism with a self aware affection for adventure games, LucasArts in particular. -

Biographical Note Steven Meretzky was born on May 1, 1957 in Yonkers, NY. He attended MIT in 1975 in pursuit of an architecture career, and was majoring in construction management when he changed his career goals to focus on computer game development. His roommate at the time, Mike Dornbrook, was working as the first and only game tester for Infocom, a computer game publisher specializing in text adventures (aka “interactive fiction”) titles. Interactive fiction games are controlled by the player through a text-based parser, which interprets simple instructions that the player types into the computer, such as “get lamp.” Dornbrook was play testing the title Zork I in their living room on an Apple II computer, recording any programming bugs, and Meretzky assisted (unpaid) because of his interest in the game. -

January/ February 1996 Issue #7 The Magazine for Interactive Fiction Enthusiasts Do you play adventure games by yourself, or as part of a group? I’m used to considering it a solitary activity, so it was a real treat to get together in early January—on the first day of the Great Blizzard of ’96, no less!—with several other IF fans in the New York City area. (For those who couldn’t make it because of the weather, yes, you definitely had a valid excuse!) Since surfing the Web, playing sneak previews of upcoming games, drinking coffee, and eating chocolate chip cookies are four of my favorite things (not necessarily in that order), I naturally had a great time. I hope to organize another such get-together in the near-term. I also wanted to give a quick mention to a book that came across my desk recently called Interactive Writer’s Handbook, by Darryl Wimberley and John Samsel (Los Angeles: The Carronade Group, 1995). Targeting writers, producers, and designers interested in learning about writing interactive screenplays, the book mainly addresses the creation of CD-ROM games and other multimedia entertainment but I think that text adventure game developers would draw inspiration from it too. Among other notable interviews, the book includes a ques- tion-and-answer session with Michele Em, screenwriter for Return to Contents: Zork that includes some telling details about how that project was pieced together. For example, she notes she had five or six weeks to Newsbriefs/Top 10 IF Web Sites ...............2 write the dialogue—including deciding where and how to place puzzle clues—for 28 characters (the game had already been designed by this Letters .......................3 point). -
