If you would like the table with that glass top, please check out our main product listing here: MC-6501.) Part of the Platner Collection, our dining table is inspired by Platner’s designs from 1966 is an elegant addition to your dining room. This iconic piece features steel rods to form the curved table base. Mr. Platner, who worked in the firms of Eero Saarinen and Kevin Roche in the early and mid-1960"s, introduced his collection of chairs, ottomans and tables in 1966. Known as the "Platner Collection", in the original design, each piece glass rests on a sculptural base of nickel-plated steel rods resembling a shiny sheaf of wheat. Platner designed both the structure and the production method for these designs, forming his primary contribution to the mid-century modern furniture movement and is still an enduring icon of 1960"s Modernism. While this is a very sturdy base and hold a lot of weight, if you are considering using for your own top, we recommend a minimum diameter of 54 inches (to have adequate leg room) and a maximum diameter of 60 inches (unless you plan on securing the top with some sort of bracket) Dimensions: Top Diameter: 34 inches Bottom Diameter: 20 inches Height: 28.75 inches Weight: 110 lbs Product URL: https://www.modernclassics.com/store/pc/Platner-Style-Wire-Frame-Round-Dining-Table-Base-Only-6p19582.htm.

  • An Exhibition Exploring the Role Designers and Architects Play In
An exhibition exploring the role designers and architects play in saving endangered Modern buildings, with case studies that include works by Marcel Breuer, Paul Rudolph, the Bauhaus, Warren Platner, and Edward Durell Stone, and featuring photographs by Andrew L. Moore. Exhibition organized by World Monuments Fund and sponsored by Knoll, Inc. Despite Modernism’s influential place in our architectural heritage, many significant Modernist and other recent buildings are endangered because of neglect, perceived obsolescence, or inappropriate renovation, and some are even in imminent danger of demolition. In response to these threats, in 2006, the World Monuments Fund launched its Modernism at Risk Initiative. This exhibition was conceived as part of WMF’s effort to demonstrate that Modern buildings can remain sustainable structures with vital futures. Along with the WMF/Knoll Modernism Prize, which is awarded biennially to recognize innovative architectural and design solutions that preserve or enhance Modern landmarks, the exhibition highlights the special challenges and the promising opportunities of conserving Modern architecture. Bonnie Burnham President, World monuments Fund For over 70 years, Knoll has used modern design to connect people with their work, their lives, and their world. Our founders, Hans and Florence Knoll, embraced the creative genius of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Bauhaus School to create new types of furniture for the workplace and home. Their approach, where craftsmanship joined with technology through the

Platner Seating Collection Warren Platner PLATNER SEATING COLLECTION In the 1960s, Warren Platner transformed steel wire into a sculptural furniture collection, thus creating a design icon of the modern era. The furniture’s unique, harmonious forms are produced by welding curved vertical steel wire rods to circular frames, producing a moiré effect and capturing the decorative, gentle and graceful quality that Platner sought to achieve. All metal components are finished in bright nickel with a clear protective coating, painted bronze metallic, or plated in 18k gold. The seating collection includes a side chair and a lounge chair with complementary stool. WARREN PLATNER Warren Platner studied architecture at Cornell University and, following his work with legendary designers Raymond Loewy, Eero Saarinen and I.M. Pei, he transformed steel wire into a sculptural furniture collection for Knoll, thus creating a design icon of the modern era. The furniture’s unique, harmonious forms are created by welding curved vertical steel wire rods to circular frames, producing a moiré effect and capturing the decorative, gentle, graceful quality that Platner sought to achieve. He personally formulated the production techniques for the complicated designs with each chair requiring over a thousand welds and more than one hundred cylindrical steel rods. Platner made notable architectural contributions throughout his career, including the Georg Jensen Design Center and the Windows on the World restaurant in the World Trade Center, both in New York City.
