Es de un miembro del jurado, Esther Miller, escultora y ama de casa de Oakland que favoreció que el premio recayese en la, aún, oficina de Saarinen. RESUMEN: En la noticia se da cuenta del fallo del jurado en uno de los concursos más importantes del momento, el museo de Oakland. Lista los participantes (Breuer, Johnson, Rudolph, Gro- pius…) y comenta la soprendente decisión del jurado al premiar a la oficina de Saarinen sin haberle entrevistado nunca (murió en octubre de 1961). Describe brevemente lo que se intuye que será el museo en ese momento: tres edificios con un parque al lado y construido en hormigón y madera. Destaca la posibilidad de esta- blecer flujos de movimiento entre el interior y el exterior, el edificio y el ‘previsto’ parque contiguo, que penetraría en el edificio. RESUMEN: El artículo presenta el pabellón que Charles Eames y, todavía, Eero Saarinen and Associa- tes realizarán para IBM en la Feria de Nueva York de 1964. Se describe funcionalmente y se explican los acontecimientos que tendrán lugar en el interior, prestando especial aten- ción al contenido museográfico realizado por Charles Eames. SCHMERTZ IDIOMA: INGLÉS TIPO DE ARTÍCULO: PRESENTACIÓN DE UN PROYECTO COMPOSICIÓN DEL ARTÍCULO: Se trata de un extenso artículo sobre los pabellones de la Feria de Nueva York de 1964. En cuanto a KRJDA, se dedica una única página al proyecto de la IBM (p. 148). Cuatro fotografías (una exterior y tres interiores) enmarcan un breve texto descriptivo. RESUMEN: Una descripción y crítica positiva del edificio realizado por los asociados del fallecido Eero Saarinen junto a Charles Eames. Revela las intenciones del proyecto: mostrar el funcionamiento de las computadoras y admirar el progreso de la tecnología. CONCEPTOS Y CITAS: No se tratan conceptos teóricos. “The IBM Pavilion is a brilliant work of architectural imagination, and it’s not even a building. It is a great egg laid by a giant bird on the green plastic leaves of some wonderful steel trees that make a little 19th-century wooded park where long ago there was a fair”. Retired now, "Chuck" has been the head of design of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill's San Francisco office from 1955-1981. Those twenty-six years were a time of unprecedented growth and change to which Chuck not only bore witness but helped shape. Chuck Bassett was one of the SOM triumvirate of the postwar years: he was the West Coast counterpart of Gordon Bunshaft in New York and William Hartmann in Chicago. In 1988 the California Council of the American Institute of Architects awarded SOM, San Francisco, a 42-year award for "...the genuine commitment that the firm has had to its city, to the profession and to both art and the business of architecture." Although Chuck prefers to be known as a team player, his personal contribution to this achievement is unmistakable in the context of urban San Francisco since 1955.

KENDALL, FAIA, WAS BORN IN SHATTUCK, Oklahoma, on March 17, 1942, and died in Houston on Monday, February 25, 2013. For over two decades Bill was both a close friend and a valued professional collab- orator of mine and I am pleased and honored to tell his story. Bill earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966 and Bachelor of Architecture degree cum laude in 1967 from the University of Houston, where he received the Alpha Rho Chi Medal. He received his Master of Architecture de- gree in 1970 from Rice University. After work- ing at several fi rms during his college years, Bill joined Wilson, Morris, Crane & Anderson (later S.I. Morris Associates) in 1968, where he became a partner in 1973. In 1978 Bill and Hal Weatherford founded KWA after they had the opportunity with their predecessor fi rm to collaborate as associated architects with Philip Johnson on Gerald Hines’s land- mark Pennzoil Place. Bill and Hal had moved to New York to work on the Pennzoil project in Philip’s offi ce.     Chapter 7: Urban Design and Visual Resources 7.1 Introduction This chapter assesses the Proposed Action’s potential effects on urban design and visual resources. Per the 2014 City Environmental Quality Review (CEQR) Technical Manual, the urban design and visual resources assessment is undertaken to determine whether and how a project or action may change the visual experience of a pedestrian, focusing on the components of the project or action that may have the potential to affect the arrangement, appearance, and functionality of the built and natural environment. According to the CEQR Technical Manual, urban design is defined as the totality of components—including streets, buildings, open spaces, wind, natural resources, and visual resources—that may affect a pedestrian’s experience of public space. A visual resource is defined as the connection from the public realm to significant natural or built features, including views of the waterfront, public parks, landmark structures or districts, otherwise distinct buildings or groups of buildings, and natural resources. As described in Chapter 1, “Project Description,” the New York City Department of City Planning (DCP) is proposing zoning map and zoning text amendments that would collectively affect approximately 78 blocks in Greater East Midtown, in Manhattan Community Districts 5 and 6 (collectively, the “Proposed Action”). The Proposed Action is intended to reinforce the area’s standing as a one of the City’s premiere business districts, support the preservation of landmarks, and provide for above- and below-grade public realm improvements as contained in the Public Realm Improvement Concept Plan (the “Concept Plan”) described in Chapter 1, “Project Description.” Many aspects of urban design are controlled by zoning, and because the Proposed Action would entail changes to zoning and related development-control mechanisms, the Proposed Action therefore may have the potential to result in changes to urban design.
