Adejo3 1, 2, 3, DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, MAKURDI, BENUE STATE, NIGERIA E-mail addresses: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT Well pumping test results from 74 boreholes within twelve LGAs of Benue State were collated and analysed to determine the aquifer hydraulic characteristics. Cooper-Jacob’s non-uniform flow equation was used to determine the transmissivity, T, storativity, S, hydraulic conductivity, K and specific capacity, Sc of the aquifers of the study areas. The Geographical Information System (GIS) was used to generate colour coded maps of the determined hydraulics characteristics of the aquifers. The static water level (SWL) ranged from 2 to 8 m in Katsina-Ala, Ado, parts of Vandeikya and Gboko, while the rest of the study areas had SWL of 8 to 20 m with isolated areas of Konshisha and Gboko having SWL up to 38 m. Hydraulic conductivity values fall between 0.01 to 1.0 m/day in most of the study areas except Gboko and Buruku LGAs where K ranged between 1.0 to 5.0 m/day. The specific capacity of major parts of the study areas ranged from 0.01 to 10 m2/day except Konshisha, Gboko and Ushongo LGAs where the values ranged from 10.0 to 50.0 m2/day with the highest value of 83 m2/day obtained at Tse-Filla in Konshisha LGA. Transmissivity values ranged from 0.01 to 8 m2/day except, parts of Konshisha and Gboko where the value went up to 16 m2/day and 49 m2/day respectively. The highest value of storativity was 2.4 in Ado LGA with a range of 0.4 to 1.0 in parts of Katsina-Ala, Ukum, Konshisha, Ushongo and Gboko LGAs. The remaining parts of the study area had storativity values of 0.01 to 0.4. The results show that the aquifers of the study areas are of moderate to low or limited yield. The generated hydraulic characteristics are useful tools for planning and development of ground water in the study area. There have been various estimates of the prevalence of hepatitis B and C infections in Nigeria. Recent studies have shown the prevalence to be lower than previously reported. The different populations studied might be responsible for this. It is important to have a real population data that would inform the policies to be adopted for eradication. We set out to determine the prevalence, risk factors, and pattern of hepatitis B and C in Benue State, Central Nigeria. Four thousand and five (4,005) subjects, aged 1 year and older, were selected through a multistage random sampling to represent all parts of the state. Trained health workers administered a validated questionnaire. Rapid test kits were standardized and used in determining the prevalence of the respective viruses. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and antibodies to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) were found to be positive in 5% and 1%, respectively, of subjects screened. The prevalence varied from one local government area to another, with HBsAg being 8% in the highest to 2% in the lowest LGC, and anti-HCV being 3% in the highest and 0% in the lowest.

The objectives of this study were to, map out gully sites in Katsina-Ala Town using GIS techniques, assess the relationship between gully parameters and their effects on infrastructure in Katsina- Ala Town, evaluate the effects of gully erosion on infrastructure in Katsina-Ala town and suggest appropriate recommendations for measures of control. Data were collected using primary and secondary sources, analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics, Findings from the study revealed that: a strong correlation exists between gully width and damages on physical infrastructure, weak correlation between depth of gullies and damages to infrastructure and moderate correlation between gully length and physical infrastructure damage in the study area; gully erosion has affected or has potential effects on 67 buildings, 10 pipelines, 25 electric poles 47 streets and 21 culverts. The study recommends preventive measures to avert the adverse effects of gully erosion on infrastructural facilities in Katsina-Ala town. 1. A well validated Likert type scale instrument called Immunization Related Issues Questionnaire (IRIQ) consisting of 22 items with a reliability index of 0.84 was the instrument for data collection. Data collected from the respondents were subjected to the Chi-Suare statistics to test the hypothesis in the study. The result of the test was significant at 0.05 level and it was concluded that funding significantly influences effective implementation of immunization programme in Bekwarra Local Government Area. The study noted that adequate funds are not provided for effective implementation of National Programme on Immunization (NPI), and whenever funds are provided, it is often mismanaged. Also, it was revealed that non-governmental organization (NGOs) should assist in funding immunization programme by providing logistics and technical equipment for effective programme implementation.

Data on farmers’ characteristics in four major tomato growing Local Government Areas (LGAs) was collected through semi-structured interview of 40 heads of major tomato growing households, and analyzed by simple percentages. Disease incidence was assessed using the quadrat method. Results revealed that Majority of commercial tomato growers in the study area were female (65%), above 30 years of age (72.5%), attained mostly ordinary level of education (70%), married (90%), with a workforce of 6-10 (55%) and a tomato growing experience of 6-10 years (27%). All tomato farmers (100%) in the study were completely reliant on local tomato varieties. Tarka LGA recorded the highest and significantly different (P<0.05) disease incidence (80.80%) followed by Buruku (76.04%), Gboko (71.50%) and lastly Ushongo (62.69%). This article examines the contribution of diaspora of the Tiv ethnic group in the USA to peacebuilding in Nigeria and argues that, contrary to recent findings in the literature that African diaspora had a negative impact on peace processes, the Tiv diaspora actively engaged all the conflicting parties in an attempt to ensure sustained peace and wider democratisation of power. They were mobilised as a result of the military massacre of two hundred unarmed Tiv civilians in their homeland. The initially weak ties of the Tiv diaspora with their home country have been strengthened, with the propensity to actively participate there. Despite their track record in peace processes, a weak social, economic and political position, as well as capacity constraints, may frustrate their efforts towards an enduring and sustainable peace. GIROH (Received 5 May 2015; Revision Accepted 17 September 2015) ABSTRACT The study examined the efficiency of resource use in soybean production in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to identify and describe the socio economic characteristics of soybean farmers and to determine resource allocation among soybean farmers. Multi-stage random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 120 respondents. Data collected were subjected to Descriptive statistics and production function analysis. The result revealed that 93.3% of the farmers had one form of formal education, or the other with over 65% cultivating between 1-4 hectares. Also, 87.5% of the farmers were in their active age, and 81.7% utilized their personal saving as a major source of finance for production. The result of the production function analysis indicated that 87.21% of the variation in the output of soybean is explained for by the independent variables. Resource-use efficiency revealed that quantity of seed, farm size, herbicide and inorganic fertilizer were underutilized while labour was over utilized. Provision of adequate and timely farming inputs, making loans accessible to farmers and reasonable market price of soybean are essential to boost production.

Dam, [email protected] ABSTRACT: The structure of road network connectivity in any region can either promote or reduce agricultural production, market opportunities, cultural and social interactions as well as businesses and employment opportunities. This study evaluates road network connectivity in the Benue Basin of Nigeria. Data on the existing road network including type and conditions, density and length of the roads in the study area were extracted from existing road map of Nigeria, and satellite imagery of the Benue basin. The data was analysed using different methods of network connectivity analysis including beta index, alpha and gamma indices. The findings reveal four types of roads network in the basin which are grouped into three categories namely: federal highways (trunk A), state government roads (trunk B) and local government and community roads (trunk C) which are in various state of deplorable conditions.
