B. 5047 Port Harcourt, Rivers State E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Physicochemical parameters concentration reveals the physical and chemical states of a water body. Water samples were collected from Nta-Wogba stream in Port Harcourt metropolis and analyzed for physicochemical parameters. This was done in order to assess the portability of the stream water for use. Some physicochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), salinity, phosphate, turbidity, sulphate, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO), chlorine, total dissolved solids (TDS) and total suspended solids (TSS) were analyzed in the month of August and November, using appropriate techniques. The mean values of the results were: pH (6.40±0.09), EC (1406.67±80.09 µS/cm), salinity (359.33±17.58 mg/L), Chlorides (219.03±10.11mg/L), nitrates (5.51±0.38mg/L), BOD (35.42±3.55mg/L), COD (48.00±1.63mg/L), DO (4.01±0.44mg/L), phosphate (0.90±0.03mg/L), Sulphate (158.50±2.50mg/L), turbidity (69.27±9.27 NTU), TDS (585.75±229.74mg/L) and TSS (37.78±4.61 mg/Lmg/L). The results obtained showed that pH, TDS, TSS phosphate, nitrate, COD and sulphate were within DPR and WHO permissible limits, while EC, turbidity, BOD5 and DO were not within the permissible limits of DPR and WHO. -

KOGI STATE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION 2019 Brief 1 BACKGROUND The Kogi State Governorship election is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 16, 2019. The election will be taking place simultaneously with the governorship elections in Bayelsa State. These governorship elections would be the first elections to be conducted by INEC post-2019 general elections. Kogi State, with a land area of 29,833 square kilometres, was carved out of Kwara and Benue states on August 27, 1991. Kogi is one of the states in the north-central zone of Nigeria. It is popularly called the confluence state due to the fact that the confluence of Rivers Niger and Benue occur there. There are three main ethnic groups in the state namely Igala, Ebira, and Okun; with the Igalas being the largest ethnic group. Lokoja is the state capital. Kogi State, with a population of 3,314,043 according to 2006 census, is the most centrally located of all the states of the federation. It shares common boundaries with Niger, Kwara and Nasarawa states as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to the north Benue and Enugu states to the East; Enugu and Anambra states to the south; and to the west by Ondo, Ekiti and Edo states. PRESENT DAY GOVERNMENT OF KOGI STATE The present Governor of Kogi is Alhaji Yahaya Bello and the Deputy Governor of the State is Edward Onoja (his former Chief of Staff), who was sworn into office in October 2019 fpllpowing the controversial impeachment of the former Deputy Governor, Simon Achuba. On 5th December 2015, Governor Yahaya Bello was declared the elected Governor of the State after a supplementary election was held to conclude the inconclusive election of Saturday, 22nd November 2015. -

ORAL PERFORMANCE OF ÌRÈGÚN MUSIC IN YAGBALAND, KOGI STATE, NIGERIA: AN OVERVIEW Stephen Olusegun Titus, Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. Abstract Performance is one of the major arts in most African countries. Among the Yoruba in Nigeria several genre of oral performance has been researched and documented. These include the ijala, iwi, oriki ekun iyawo, Iyere Ifa, iwure, among others. However, very little attention and studies have been committed to oral performance of Ìrègún chants and songs in Yagbaland. This paper, therefore, focuses on the evaluation of oral performance of Ìrègún chants and songs among Yagba people in Kogi State, located in North central of Nigeria. Primary data were collected through 3 In-depth and 3 Key Informant interviews of leaders and members of Ìrègún musical groups. In addition to 3 Participant Observation and 3 Non-Participant Observation meth- ods from Yagba-West, Yagba-East and Mopamuro Local Government Areas of Kogi State, music recordings, photographs of Ìrègún performances, and 6 chants were purposefully sampled. Secondary data were collected through library, archival and Internet sources. Although closely interwoven, Ìrègún performance is structured into preparation, actual and post-performance activities. While chanting, singing, playing of musical instruments and dancing forms the performance dimensions. Ire- gun music serves as veritable mirror and cultural preserver in Yagba communities. [email protected], 08139745190 Abstract-The purpose of the study is to examine the environmental conditions favouring the growth of “black fly” resulting to the disease Onchocerciasis in Ikov ward of Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria. Data was collected on the disease, Environmental Conditions Favouring the Growth of Blackfly, Blackfly species, Physicochemical Parameters and Density of Simuliids in rivers in the study area. The results of the study showed that both physicochemical and ecological parameters constitute the major environmental conditions in the area and they influenced the density of simuliids. For methodology, Aquatic stages of simulium were sampled covering 5 kindred areas of study area. Water samples were collected from the 5 rivers and analysed. Questionnaires were distributed in the 5 kindred areas to acquire relevant information about the breading sites. The study concluded that the dominance of Simulium damnosum complex, in the study area presents potential risk for the area. INTRODUCTION Onchocerciasis ranks as one of the most formidable infectious disease of the world, occurring mostly in savannah and rain forest area of Africa. It is also known as “river blindness” the parasitic disease is caused by filarial worm oncherca volvulus and transmitted by blood sucking blackflies of genus simulium which breed in rapidly flowing rivers.
