Page 3 of 18 TAIWAN Trip (22 Dec 2013 – 4 Jan 2014) Recommendations within 宁夏夜市 http://kampungboycitygal.com/2012/08/taiwan-itinerary-day-1-ningxia-night-market- %E5%AF%A7%E5%A4%8F%E5%A4%9C%E5%B8%82/ 1. 蓮飲料吧 Lian’s Sugarcane Juice It is located just right after Ningxia Night Market’s entrance, which is very easy to look for. They are famous for the mixed sugarcane juice. One can opt for sugarcane + starfruits/yakult/lemon. 2. 圓環邊蚵仔煎 Roundabout Oyster Omelette There are two famous oyster omelette shop in Ningxia Night Market, another one being 賴記蚵 仔煎 (from Shuanglian Station towards Ningxia Night Market, before the entrance). Patrons are supposed to wait for their queue patiently outside. Whenever there is a vacant table inside, place your order at the cooking counter and proceed to go in and sit down. 米糕 Tainan Savory Rice Pudding (NT30) It looked and tasted exactly like Lu Rou Fan, in a different form. Glutinous rice is used instead of normal white rice. The glutinous rice had a nice chewy bite to it. It also soaked up all the fatty bits from the braised pork, how could it be not delicious? 蚵仔煎 Oyster Omelette (NT 60). If you would like to order this in Taiyu, the right pronunciation is “Er-Ah-Jian”. We just made a huge joke on ourselves by calling it as “Oh-Ah-Jian”. By the way, “Oh-Ah” means crow in Taiyu. The wait staff almost died laughing at us. Back to the food, it was indeed very, very delicious 3. 里长伯臭豆腐 Ah Pek’s Stinky Tofu The stinky tofus (NT 40) were quite dissappointing. It wasn’t as crispy as we thought, and the centre was too chewy for our liking. Nothing compared to the one we had at Luodong Night Market. However, most other patrons were having oyster meesua at the same time, maybe you could give it a try next time. 4. 童年木瓜牛奶 Childhood Papaya Milk It was really creamy and not too sweet. The ratio of papaya cubes + fresh milk is about 50:50, without any sugar or ice added. 5. 方家雞肉飯 Fang’s Chicken Rice Fang’s Chicken Rice is famous for their chicken rice and lurou fan. Their chicken rice is shredded chicken + chicken sauce + fried onions on top of a bowl of white rice. We were too full from all the abovementioned food but could not resist pork liver’s soup 豬肝湯 (NT 35). 6. 劉芋仔 Liu’s Yam Ball It is undoubtedly the most popular stall in the whole of Ningxia Night Market. The queue went spiral from one end to another and we waited for almost 30 minutes! There are only two items for sale: Yam Ball 香酥芋丸 NT15 / Egg Yolk and Floss Yam Ball 蛋黃芋 餅 NT20. We bought half a dozen of these egg yolk and floss yam balls and regretted immediately. It was decent but nothing great. Note that the tickets on this train get sold out really fast. I. Introduction When it comes to the food in Taiwan, what would people recommend? For Taiwanese people, other than big restaurant such as Din Tai Fung, they would definitely mention the food in Taiwan’s night markets. Night markets are truly the essential part in Taiwanese food culture that everyone should know. Therefore, if any foreign visitor who comes to Taiwan, he or she should never miss to go to the night markets! When approaching a night market, one can smell the fragrance of delicious food coming to the nose and sense the night market’s bustling atmosphere. At a night market, one would find crowds of people filling almost every inch of the market that it is impossible to walk freely. In Taiwan, night markets are so ubiquitous that they are often the places for people to gather together to have fun, shopping, playing games, and eating tasty snacks. People can do plenty of things in a night market, for example, kids can play games, parents can get a foot massage, and young people can go shopping. Most important of all, people are able to eat delicious Taiwanese snacks. Moreover, a night market represents an important cultural aspect of Taiwan. I only got into one of the courses during that time, but the school guarantees that I’ll get into whatever international courses I want (but has to meet requirements of your program and must be approved from Telfer first). The first step I took was to make a list of the courses I wanted, and then sent them to Telfer International office for approval. Then I registered for my courses online through the NCCU website, and the ones I did not get into the first or second time, I just manually registered myself. All the courses below are full-time courses (3.0 credit). All courses run from February 20 to June 23. Each class is 3 hours long and occur once a week.

BRAISED PORK RICE (滷肉飯) A Taiwanese saying goes, "Where there is a wisp of smoke from the kitchen chimney, there will be lurou fan" (braised pork with rice). The popularity of this humble dish cannot be overstated. "Lurou fan" is synonymous with Taiwan. The Taipei city government launched a "braised pork rice is ours" campaign last year after Michelin’s Green Guide Taiwan claimed that the dish is from Shandong Province in mainland China. A good bowl of lurou fan has finely chopped, not quite minced, pork belly, slow-cooked in aromatic soy sauce with five spices. There should be an ample amount of fattiness, in which lies the magic. The meat is spooned over hot rice. A little sweet, a little salty, the braised pork rice is comfort food perfected. Starting from every evening, the night markets are always crowded with people. Furthermore, the Taiwanese snacks in night markets have played important roles in Taiwanese people’s lives. There are many unique Taiwanese snacks in night markets that you can’t find in any other countries around the world. Every time when we go to night markets, we can see lots of vendors selling Taiwanese snacks, and there are many teenagers purchasing them. As we can see there are all sorts of snacks sold in night markets, and they are so popular with teenagers. So we want to carry out a study to investigate the attraction of the Taiwanese snacks in night markets. B. Research Questions The present study was designed to address the following research questions: 1. What are the teenagers’ responses to the Taiwanese snacks in night markets? 2. What are the teenagers’ perspectives on the attraction of Taiwanese snacks in night markets? C. Methodology The subjects were 350 students, ranging in age from 15 to 18, in Chung Shan Industrial and Commercial Vocational School in Kaohsiung. Concerning the subjects’ frequencies of visiting night markets in Taiwan, 49% of the students seldom went to night markets; 41% of them went to night markets once in a while, and only 10% of them went to night markets frequently.
