Forum on Public Policy Home-Schooling in Oldtown: The Education of a Virtuous Citizenry William L. Howard, Professor of English, Chicago State University Abstract Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was the beneficiary of a unique blend of educational influences. The daughter, sister, and wife of Congregational ministers, she inherited the faith of New England Puritanism and its subsequent redirection by Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758). Studying and then teaching at her sister Catharine‟s female seminary, she shared some of her sister‟s dissent from the received faith. Her maternal grandmother ensured that Harriet was a welcome shareholder in the Episcopal Church, to which she would convert near the end of her life. Stowe‟s New England novels trace each of these influences. In Oldtown Folks (1869), she is particularly concerned with the application of Christian principles to the upbringing of three children raised in the ordinary households of a post-Revolutionary War New England community. Irrespective of its theological disputes, Oldtown families consider themselves heirs of Hebrew theocracy and rely on Biblical principles. In the Preface, the novel‟s narrator argues that the communities in which these households operated created a seed-bed of virtue that eventually helped characterize an entire nation. Stowe‟s novel thus embodies the source and constituent parts of the virtuous citizenry that the American Founders felt was necessary for a successful republic. Introduction A common refrain of the Revolutionary period in America was that self-government required citizens who were virtuous. As Dr. Benjamin Rush (1745-1813) put it in 1778, “Virtue, Virtue alone…is the basis of a republic” (Norton, 242). -

XlXlXlXlXlXlXlXlXlXlXlXlXlXlXlXlXl Yarns Spun to Order: Harriet Beecher Stowe’s The Pearl of Orr’s Island and the Advent of Maine Summer Tourism ARRIET BEECHER STOWE’s The Pearl of Orr’s Island, H a pioneering novel in the “local color” genre, was a sturdy bestseller in its time, going through forty editions between and . The height of its popularity coincided directly with the coming of summer tourism to the islands of Maine’s Casco Bay. Especially during a period from the Harpswell Steamboat Company’s founding in to America’s entry into World War I in , thousands of tourists poured onto tiny Orr’s Island each summer hoping to meet favorite characters from Pearl and visit their homes as well as the novel’s outdoor locations. Islanders responded by creating a literal cottage industry, turn- ing their houses into the homes of the Pearl, Captain Kittridge, or Aunt Roxy, charging admission to caves and coves, and even doing some role-playing. Feuds broke out among islanders over the authenticity of these lucrative competing concessions, and the Pearl phenomenon was so pronounced that it even created a rush for summer real estate. As a result, history represents the values, ideologies, and most importantly for this dissertation, the remembrances of the victorious. Their remembrances never remain ethereal or disembodied; they become the object lessons about the past for those living in the present. And these object lessons, the lessons of history, become the narratives and locations that transmit a nation’s idealized values and origin stories. It is in this confluence of remembrances, object lessons, values and origin stories that this dissertation examines in the Alamo. The Alamo represents a consummate site of memory for the United States. As a cultural narrative it persists from a mid-nineteenth century battlefield through the present day as a cinematic narrative. The Alamo is one of the historical watershed moments of the Westward expansion. However, the tales of the victors (ironically, in this case, the victors at the Alamo are the Euro- Americans who died in the battle) transmit values, lessons and stories steeped in narratives of denial. -
Lillian Gish
Lillian Gish Lived: October 14, 1893 - February 27, 1993 Worked as: director, film actress, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Mark Garrett Cooper In 1920, Lillian Gish both delivered a landmark performance in D.W. Griffith’s Way Down East and directed her sister Dorothy in Remodelling Her Husband. This was her sole director credit in a career as a screen actor that began with An Unseen Enemy in 1912 and ended with The Whales of August in 1987. Personal correspondence examined by biographer Charles Affron shows that Gish lobbied Griffith for the opportunity to direct and approached the task with enthusiasm. In 1920, in Motion Picture Magazine, however, Gish offered the following assessment of her experience: “There are people born to rule and there are people born to be subservient. I am of the latter order. I just love to be subservient, to be told what to do” (102). One might imagine that she discovered a merely personal kink. In a Photoplay interview that same year, however, she extended her opinion to encompass all women and in doing so slighted Lois Weber, one of Hollywood’s most productive directors. “I am not strong enough” to direct, Gish told Photoplay, “I doubt if any woman is. I understand now why Lois Weber was always ill after a picture” (29). What should historical criticism do with such evidence? By far the most common approach has been to argue that Gish did not really mean what the press quotes her as saying. Alley Acker, for instance, urges us not to be fooled by Gish’s “Victorian modesty” and goes on to provide evidence of her authority on the set (62). -

My Kingdom: Sentimentalism and the Refinement of Hymnody claudia stokes Few features of mid-nineteenth-century American women’s literature seem as foreign and outdated today as the omnipres- ence of hymns. In countless literary works, hymns are quoted, sung, discussed, and contemplated. Hymns in these texts are rivaled in influence only by the Bible and are potent catalysts of religious experience, sparking conversion in the unbeliever and offering reassurance to the faithful during times of trouble. In the literary world of the American mid-century, the singing of a hymn can bring tears to the eyes of even the most hardened unbeliever. Such scenes pervade fiction of the period. Dur- ing Ellen Montgomery’s sorrowful trip to live with her Aunt Fortune in Susan Warner’s The Wide, Wide World (1850), a kindly stranger ministers to her by inviting her to read a hymn and then gives her his hymnal. -

Nowadays there are so many able writers in the field of literary activity writing volumes, or ar- ticles in the newspapers or magazines, that very rapid work is necessary if a man desires to impress readers with his views of a character or of an event, before the public have listened to others. The long waiting, pondering, collating, and weighing, fit for the final labor of the historian, is impossible to him who rapidly sketches in his subject for the eyes of the genera- tion which desires an immediate survey of the imme- diate past. Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document.*** Abstract: Harriet Beecher Stowe, in Uncle Tom's Cabin, used two different and conflicting rhetorical strategies in her novel's appeals to end slavery. To elicit sympathy for the slaves, she used persuasion, a process relying upon the perception of a sameness of substance among persons. To induce fear of damnation in Northerners who condoned or passively accepted Southern slavery, she used conversion rhetoric, a process relying upon the conviction that personal identity and value are derived entirely from the moral and social "system" that produces the individual. Because the novel projects Northern and Southern whites as belonging to the same system, and since its persuasive processes, by eliciting sympathy for slaves, bring them into the system, their suffering proves the system's corruption, while the Southerners' lack of sympathy proves their difference of substance—their lack of humanity. Materials in the collection include photographs (both color and black and white), postcards, advertising materials, and other visual art from the late 19th--early 21st centuries. Most images are American or European in origin, showcasing themes of antiquity, mythology, and literature. The film stills range from the early silent era to more modern Hollywood blockbusters, but also include televised movies and series. In addition to marketing images by studios, the collection also consists of rare behind the scenes images from film sets and creative departments. The stage works exhibited include theater, ballet, and opera. Materials from this previously private collection have been curated and displayed at institutions such as the Tate Modern, Emory University, and the University of Oxford.
