  • Music on PBS: a History of Music Programming at a Community Radio Station
Music on PBS: A History of Music Programming at a Community Radio Station Rochelle Lade (BArts Monash, MArts RMIT) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2021 Abstract This historical case study explores the programs broadcast by Melbourne community radio station PBS from 1979 to 2019 and the way programming decisions were made. PBS has always been an unplaylisted, specialist music station. Decisions about what music is played are made by individual program announcers according to their own tastes, not through algorithms or by applying audience research, music sales rankings or other formal quantitative methods. These decisions are also shaped by the station’s status as a licenced community radio broadcaster. This licence category requires community access and participation in the station’s operations. Data was gathered from archives, in‐depth interviews and a quantitative analysis of programs broadcast over the four decades since PBS was founded in 1976. Based on a Bourdieusian approach to the field, a range of cultural intermediaries are identified. These are people who made and influenced programming decisions, including announcers, program managers, station managers, Board members and the programming committee. Being progressive requires change. This research has found an inherent tension between the station’s values of cooperative decision‐making and the broadcasting of progressive music. Knowledge in the fields of community radio and music is advanced by exploring how cultural intermediaries at PBS made decisions to realise eth station’s goals of community access and participation. ii Acknowledgements To my supervisors, Jock Given and Ellie Rennie, and in the early phase of this research Aneta Podkalicka, I am extremely grateful to have been given your knowledge, wisdom and support.

MOBILE SMART FUNDAMENTALS MMA MEMBERS EDITION DECEMBER 2013 messaging . advertising . apps . mcommerce www.mmaglobal.com NEW YORK • LONDON • SINGAPORE • SÃO PAULO MOBILE MARKETING ASSOCIATION DECEMBER 2013 REPORT A Year of Transformation The new-year invariably kicks off with a slew of predictions, many of which are being usefully defined and shared by our global and regional board members, and many of which are likely to come to fruition or certainly build in momentum. The one area that we feel is certain to gain momentum and have a huge impact on how the mobile industry develops in 2014 is the number of brands that we will see moving from the sidelines and fully into the game. The impact of this will be seen both in the gains in mobile spend as brands move away from the 1% average that we’ve been seeing and start moving towards 10-15% mobile spend with increased ROIs as a result. We will also start to see how mobile is driving both innovation in marketing and transformation of business. As always, the MMA will be providing support and guidance for the entire industry, shining a light on inspiration, capability development, measurement and advocacy allowing all constituents to continue building their businesses, with mobile at its core. We look forward to supporting you and the industry. I wish you much success in 2014. Verizon Up To Speed Live Friday, August 21, 2020 Redefining Communication Access www.acscaptions.com >> Stop me if you've heard this one before, we are living through unprecedented. >> Unprecedented. >> Unprecedented. >> Unprecedented. >> Unprecedented. >> I am not sure how many times I have used the word unprecedented, but it's a really good word. >> So much of what we do now is virtual. Meetings, happy hours, graduations, even weddings. Now it's time for a virtual anniversary. Won't you join me? 20 years ago, on June 30th, Verizon was born. It was an era of pay phones, dial-up internet, and not so smart wireless phones. We have made so much history since then, it's worth a look back at some of what went into who we are today. There was our crisis response to September 11th, 2001. >> I have seen people from everywhere down here, working together, pulling together, and we are going to get this thing up and running. >> A character-defining effort with V Teamers working around the clock to get things back up in a little more than a week. There was this iconic campaign, begun in 2002. >> Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now? Good. >> Some of you are so young, you may not know this guy actually worked for us first. There was the birth of our Verizon credo in 2004. >> Who is this company that we call Verizon? >> Our historic pioneering of mass-scale fiber optics home with Fios, our recovery response to Hurricane Katrina.
