  • Everybody Loves Joe Henry B
Journal of Business Case Studies – July/August 2013 Volume 9, Number 4 Everybody Loves Joe Henry B. Balfanz, Northern Michigan University, USA Gary J. Brunswick, Ph.D., Northern Michigan University, USA ABSTRACT This is a case about an entrepreneur who has spent his entire life riding, fixing, and selling bicycles. While the business is a family business, there is little doubt that it revolves around the owner and his reputation as not only a smart businessman, but also as a very honest, friendly, approachable individual. The case discusses the business in detail, from the early days to the present. The owners of the business, Joe and Cheryl Russell, have seen the marketing landscape change greatly in the past thirty-five years. Making advertising decisions is not as easy as it used to be, thanks to all the new media choices. In addition to making the proper selections, the Russells also wonder if they are spending too much money on advertising and promotion. Many other bicycle dealers spend much less on promotion than the Russells do. “I’ve never met a bike I didn’t like.” (Joe Russell) Keywords: Sports Retailing; Cycling; Promotion; Advertising INTRODUCTION oe Russell has been a fan of bicycles from the very start. Encouraged by his parents, and with the help of siblings and spouse, the business has grown from the family garage to a very large store with over 400 J assembled bicycles, exercise equipment, repair shop, and much more. The reputation of Russells Cycling and Fitness has always been top notch and regarded as a place where customers can find a good bike and know they’ll have the service to back it up when it is needed.

OLDING hands is something special with me. After over 35 years HI of marriage, I still enjoy holding hands with my wife, Rose. The magic is still there. Holding hands gives evidence of a number of things. It signifies affection, friendship, assurance, agreement, support and commitment. In Isaiah 41:13, our Heavenly Father makes a reassuring promise to earthlings. He says, "For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee" (Emphasis supplied). Have you ever observed a young child who on his own is deathly afraid of dogs but who is comforted and emboldened when his father holds his hand. Likewise, our Heavenly Father extends His hand to encourage and support us. There is really no need for you or me to be afraid if we are holding His hand. We are reminded in Hebrews 11:6 that "without faith it is impossible to please him." Who would dare dispute the necessity of this important factor in the life of every sincere seeker of salvation? Without faith there is no hope of a place in God's kingdom. `Hold Thou I like the way Ellen G. White in her book Gospel Workers, Page 262, defines faith. She says, "Faith is the clasping of the hand of Christ in My Hand' every emergency." She makes an equally important statement in Testimonies for the Church, Volume 5, Page 540, "To let go the hold is Robert H. Carter to perish." President It is important that the struggling child of God recognize the Lake Union Conference importance of maintaining contact with our Lord, the source of our power and strength.

  • Cooperative Program Tape Networks in Noncommercial EDRS
DOCUMENT RESUME ED 115 254 IR 002 798 AUTHOR Nordgren, Peter D. TITLE Cooperative Program Tape Networks in Noncommercial Radio. PUB DATE Dec 75 NOTE 94p. EDRS PRICE MF-$0.76 HC-$4.43 Plus Postage DESCRIPTORS *Cooperative Programs; *Educational Radio; Higher Education; *Programing (Broadcast); *Questionnaires; Shared Services; Statistical Data; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS Cooperative Program Tape Networks ABSTRACT Over 200 noncommercial radio stations responded to a survey to gather data on the characteristics of member stations and to sample the opinion of nonmembers toward a cooperative network concept. A second survey of 18 networks sought to gather indepth information on network operation. Results showed that 22.2 percent of the stations surveyed were participating in program cooperatives, and over 79 percent felt that network participation would be beneficial. It was concluded that the cooperative program tape network should continue in order to fulfill specialized programing needs. A copy of the two questionnaires, the letter of transmittal, and the mailing list is appended. A list of the networks that participated in the study, 12 statistical tables, and a 20-item bibliography are included.
