  • Everybody Loves Joe Henry B
Journal of Business Case Studies – July/August 2013 Volume 9, Number 4 Everybody Loves Joe Henry B. Balfanz, Northern Michigan University, USA Gary J. Brunswick, Ph.D., Northern Michigan University, USA ABSTRACT This is a case about an entrepreneur who has spent his entire life riding, fixing, and selling bicycles. While the business is a family business, there is little doubt that it revolves around the owner and his reputation as not only a smart businessman, but also as a very honest, friendly, approachable individual. The case discusses the business in detail, from the early days to the present. The owners of the business, Joe and Cheryl Russell, have seen the marketing landscape change greatly in the past thirty-five years. Making advertising decisions is not as easy as it used to be, thanks to all the new media choices. In addition to making the proper selections, the Russells also wonder if they are spending too much money on advertising and promotion. Many other bicycle dealers spend much less on promotion than the Russells do. “I’ve never met a bike I didn’t like.” (Joe Russell) Keywords: Sports Retailing; Cycling; Promotion; Advertising INTRODUCTION oe Russell has been a fan of bicycles from the very start. Encouraged by his parents, and with the help of siblings and spouse, the business has grown from the family garage to a very large store with over 400 J assembled bicycles, exercise equipment, repair shop, and much more. The reputation of Russells Cycling and Fitness has always been top notch and regarded as a place where customers can find a good bike and know they’ll have the service to back it up when it is needed.

Rankin School District #98 137165th Street Pekin, IL 61554 309-346-3182 www.rankin98.org Dear Students, Parents, and Community Members: Welcome to Rankin School District #98 and to the 2021-2022 school year! On behalf of Rankin School District’s Board of Education, Staff, and Administration, thank you for sending your children to our District. Our highly trained and dedicated staff is committed to providing your children the best education possible as we believe, “Our School is a Great Place to Learn.” Our District’s main purpose, and what ultimately directs our decision making, can be found in our Mission Statement, “Empowering all students to reach their maximum potential and become productive, respectful, responsible, and well-rounded citizens.” As we embark on this mission, it is necessary that our District be governed by policies and procedures. Thus, our District has annually updated and prepared this handbook (found online) to assist you in providing this important information. Our handbook, which is in alignment with our Board Policy Manual, works cooperatively with the Illinois School Code to guide us along our mission. At the beginning of the year, we will familiarize our students with our overall expectations and code of conduct, but we strongly recommend that parents review this handbook with their children in advance of the school year. Occasionally, our formal resources do not account for all situations or for situations of extraordinary circumstances. In these special cases, our administrative team and Board of Education reserve the right to modify as necessary and provide the essential judgment and guidance needed.
