2008-09 big blue men’s golf - 3 BIG BLUE COACHING STAFF Head Coach Patrick Etherton E-mail: [email protected] Office phone: 217.424.3604 Patrick Etherton was named the head men's golf coach at Millikin in the summer of 2004 and is in his fifth season heading the program. Etherton is also an assistant coach for the Big Blue football program and teaches in the Exercise Science & Sport curriculum. Prior to coming to Millikin, his most recent coaching position was as Division III Washington & Jefferson's Special Teams Coordinator, defensive backs coach and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator. He has also served as the Offensive Coordinator at Division III University of Puget Sound, was the defensive backs coach at Division III Allegheny College and was a student assistant for the offensive line and linebackers at Millikin from 1998-00. He wore a Big Blue uniform as a defensive back for Millikin from 1996-98. Etherton recently completed his Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Illinois Springfield.

Assistant Coach Kurt Rogers Former Millikin standout golfer Kurt Rogers is joining the Big Blue coaching staff for the 2008-09 year as an assistant coach for men’s golf program. Rogers is the golf pro at Decatur’s Red Tail Run golf course. During his career he has also served as the assistant pro at Fairies Golf Course and Hickory Point Golf Course. Last fall, Rogers, Millikin class of 1983, was inducted into the Millikin Athletic Hall of Fame for his excellence in collegiate and professional golf. Rogers played four years of golf at Millikin, serving as the team’s captain during his junior year and co-captain as a senior. Rogers was named most valuable player all four years of his college career: The entire team shared the honor his freshman year, he was named sole MVP his sophomore and senior years, and he shared co-MVP honors with Brad Kay ’85 his junior year. He placed fourth his junior year and eighth his senior year on the All-CCIW team. During his sophomore and junior years, he made the cut for the Illinois State Amateur tournament. In 1985, Rogers joined the Professional Golf Association and went on to play in 21 Illinois Open Tournaments, placing third in the 1998 Illinois Open and finishing ten times in the top 15. In the United States Golf Association U.S. Open, he advanced to the sectional tournament five times and twice was the medalist at the local qualifying tournament with a score of 69 in both 2002 and 2006. Rogers played on the PGA tour 1991 and 1994 Hardee’s Classic tournaments, as well as the Hogan Tour, the Nike Tour, the Nationwide Tour, the Golfweek/Callaway Pro Scratch National Finals in Las Vegas, the Hawkeye Classic in Iowa, the Greater Cleveland Open, the St. Louis Open, the Greater Wichita Classic and the Highland Springs Country Club-Ozarks Open in various cities around the Midwest. In the Illinois Professional Golf Association of America, Rogers won the Assistants Championship in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2001; the Chapter Championship in 1997 and 1999; and the Match Play Championship in 1998. He was also five-time consecutive Assistant Player of the Year, from 1998-2002 and Chapter Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999. Rogers holds the current course records for Decatur’s Hickory Point Golf Course with 61, Scovill Golf Course with 59 and the new Red Tail Run Golf Course with a 67. To date, he has hit fourteen holes in one. Rogers earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education, secondary teaching, from Millikin. LOOKING AT 2009

Millikin Head Coach Patrick Etherton has high hopes for his young Big Blue men’s golf squad in 2009. Millikin returns eight letter winners and its top 12 golfers from last season. The team is young with three freshman, 10 sophomores and two juniors. Etherton believes his talented players will overcome their lack of collegiate experience. Returners Cory Henry, Sean Liston, Sam Osborne and J.B. Spillane all had stroke averages of 80 or below last season and are expected to continue to improve this season. Millikin is also counting on Ed Kelly who finished tied for 20th at last year’s conference tournament. Etherton has a deep squad with each of the 15 golfers capable of turning in a low round each time out on the course. The Big Blue played well in the 2008 fall season winning at Blackburn and taking second at the Big Blue Classic. Millikin is ready to improve on its fourth place finish at the 2008 CCIW Championships and based on their play in the fall several Millikin golfers are ready to compete for spots in the conference tournament’s top ten.
