Poorthuis PRECIS A combined search of documents in the secret archives of the Vatican and of hith­ erto unexplored Dutch archives sheds new light on the genesis of Nostra aetate, the dec­ laration of Vatican II, mainly on Judaism. Two Dutch Catholics exercised a decisive influence upon the making of this declaration: monsignors Johannes Willebrands and Anton Ramselaar. In 1958 and 1960 Ramselaar organized a meeting with international pioneers in Jewish-Christian relations at the Dutch city of Apeldoorn. Research into Dutch and Vatican archives proves the decisive influence of these meetings upon Nostra aetate. In addition, original documents demonstrate that, for the pioneers, the State of Israel was not just a political affair but also the recognition of the Jewish right to sur­ vive as a people. Later attempts to marginalize this aspect of the Apeldoorn memoran­ dum coincided with the exclusion of the issues of the State of Israel and World War II as too political. Without Willebrands’s ingenious strategic powers that took over Ram- selaar’s network of pioneers, while sticking to traditional theological insights, the decla­ ration would probably never have been promulgated. However, without Ramselaar’s courage, Nostra aetate would not even have been considered a necessity. Introduction At the end of 2014, it will be fifty' years since the declaration Nostra aetate on the non-Christian religions was released at the Second Vatican Council.

    Conflict Quarterly The Peace Movement in Israel: Reflections on Why Peacemakers Do Not Necessarily Make Peace by Paul R. Dekar INTRODUCTION Despite the resurgence, in Canada and elsewhere, of peace activisim, myriad wars rage on. Arguably, these conflicts threaten human survival more than does the general danger of nuclear war. Yet, for all its vigour, the peace movement has focused more on the urgent need to prevent nuclear war and virtually ignored the actuality of war. Neither has it identified with efforts to end the various regional conflicts. This paper directs attention to one regional conflict and to efforts to bring the conflict to an end. The Arab-Israeli conflict, and more specifically the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, has continued for almost for­ ty years. It is the most serious ongoing conflict, especially because it is the one most likely to escalate to use of nuclear weapons and to involve both superpowers. In this context, one so deadly and devoid of prospect for resolution, at least since the hopes generated by the Camp David ac­ cords began to fade into memory, it often surprises people to learn that there is a remarkable peace movement in Israel. Many groups sprang up after Israel's invasion of Lebanon in June 1982, but others, including such relatively well-known organizations as New Outlook, Peace Now, the Israel Council for Israeli-Palestinian Peace, and Oz ve Shalom, have an earlier history of trying to end the conflict between Israel and its neighbors. A number of institutions contribute to the peace process through research, study and publication.

Oscar Jarzmik Doctor of Philosophy Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto 2016 Abstract This dissertation examines the art of government on the part of the Israeli Municipality in Jerusalem by tracking its rationalization and implementation from the beginning of the occupation in June 1967 until the breakout of the first Palestinian intifada in December 1987. I argue that local policymakers assumed a uniqueness to the history and sociality of Jerusalem and posited a primordial set of political and cultural traditions among Palestinian residents. These preconceptions encouraged them to develop a particular structure for local government and concomitant blueprint for social/administrative relations. Despite all the reports that have appeared for years describing the suffering and sadness that Christianity has had to bear in the Mid- dle East – here in the Schneller Magazine too – it may be surprising to place our focus this time on growing congregations in the Middle East. In no way do we wish to detract from the suffering and tragedy of those sisters and brothers who are threatened by per- secution and who see no future any more in their homeland.

He is the patriarchal vicar for Hebrew-speaking Catholics in Israel. He is also the coordinator of the pastoral care for migrant workers and asylum seekers. At the occa- sion, Robert A.
