Forte ABSTRACT In 1971, Isaac Asimov observed in humanity, “a science-important society.” For this he credited the man who had been his editor in the 1940s during the period known as the “golden age” of American science fiction, John W. Campbell, Jr. Campbell was editor of Astounding Science-Fiction, the magazine that launched both Asimovʼs career and the golden age, from 1938 until his death in 1971. Campbell and his authors set the foundation for the modern sci-fi, cementing genre distinction by the application of plausible technological speculation. Campbell assumed the “science-important society” that Asimov found thirty years later, attributing sci-fi ascendance during the golden age a particular compatibility with that cultural context. On another level, sci-fiʼs compatibility with “science-important” tendencies during the first half of the twentieth-century betrayed a deeper agreement with the social structures that fueled those tendencies and reflected an explication of modernity on capitalist terms. -

Guest E ditorial Allen M. Steele WHERE WE CAME FROM IS WHERE WE’RE GOING The following essay is adapted from a speech made at the second Asian Pacific Sci - ence Fiction Convention (Apsfcon 2019) in Beijing, China, on May 26, 2019. I’m not only a science fiction writer, but also a science fiction historian, albeit of the armchair variety. The history of the SF genre fascinates me just about as much as any SF novel I’ve ever read. I’ve often used SF history as the background for my own work, such as my novel Arkwright , and lately my interest has only become stronger as I’ve explored the genre’s origins. One of the most wonderful things that’s come out of my studies is an appreciation for SF’s roots and just how truly international they are. More importantly, though, if we accept the idea that examining history can be a reliable means of forecasting the future—a major reason why it’s important to preserve the past and study it—then it’s possible that we may be able to perceive the direction where we’re headed by looking back to see where we’ve come from. Thus, a brief, and by no means complete, history of science fiction: Like science fiction’s close cousin, fantasy, SF has its roots in fables and myth-olo - gy, stories of the fantastic as opposed to realistic fiction. Much of this, particularly the imaginative literature published prior to the mid-nineteenth century, could be considered proto-SF. -

The Hugo Awards have been presented at Worldcons since 1953, but that means that a lot of earlier works - some by very famous names - have not had their chance to be awarded this prestigious honour. The Retro Hugo Awards seeks to redress that balance and showcase the wealth of talent on show at the time. And we intend to have some fun whilst doing it! Tonight, we will try and take you back to 1939, complete with period costumes, retro- futuristic stylings, and live music from the Brideshead Ballroom Stompers. -
