That’s not a promise— that’s fact in the making. We in New York have been working on the convention for r over a year now, long before we were even chosen at the Cle- vention in 1955. Representing as we do the heart of science fiction professional activity, our potential is tremendous. Our plans, therefore, are ambitious and complex. The basis for all our plans, however, is simple: let's have fun. No matter how idealistic or pretentious some of our motives for a convention might sound, there’s no denying that the principal reason for the gathering is to have a good time. And that’s what we're doing our best to guarantee you. The first step was to find the best facilities to make the affair friendly and enjoyable. The second was to give you a weekend in New York at low cost. The Biltmore answers both requirements. In addition, however, the Biltmore will fulfill our intangible but important desire for "class" or "respec­ tability". This convention is not only going to be plenty of fun, it7 s going to be something each one of us will be proud of. Our plans are continuing to take form. You can be certain that each of us will do our best to make your convention a success— an outstanding success. All we need now is your enthusiasm. Put a red circle around the Labor Day weekend date on your calendar. Look forward to those days as one of the best vacations of your life. Urge your friends to be there. Write letters and talk it up. He a tte n d e d M ulsh's Grammar School in Taunton and K in g 's C o lle g e in London. In 1936 he en te r e d the C iv il S e r v ic e and sp en t f i v e y e a r s as an A uditor in His Maj­ e s t y ' s Exchequer and A udit D epartm ent. From 1941 to 1946 he was in th e R .A .F . where he was te c h n ic a l o f f ic e r in charge of th e f i r s t ex p erim en ta l Ground C o n tr o lle d Approach radar dur­ in g i t s t r i a l in E ngland. Forte ABSTRACT In 1971, Isaac Asimov observed in humanity, “a science-important society.” For this he credited the man who had been his editor in the 1940s during the period known as the “golden age” of American science fiction, John W. Campbell, Jr. Campbell was editor of Astounding Science-Fiction, the magazine that launched both Asimovʼs career and the golden age, from 1938 until his death in 1971. Campbell and his authors set the foundation for the modern sci-fi, cementing genre distinction by the application of plausible technological speculation. Campbell assumed the “science-important society” that Asimov found thirty years later, attributing sci-fi ascendance during the golden age a particular compatibility with that cultural context. On another level, sci-fiʼs compatibility with “science-important” tendencies during the first half of the twentieth-century betrayed a deeper agreement with the social structures that fueled those tendencies and reflected an explication of modernity on capitalist terms.

    PPhhooxxpphhyyrree:: The First Science Fiction Convention From left to right, the majority of the attendees of Philcon 1, the world’s first science fiction convention: Oswald Train, Donald A. Wollheim, Milton A. Rothman, Frederik Pohl, John B. Michel, William S. Sykora (holding the NYB-ISA flag), David A. Kyle, and Robert Madle. They’re standing in front of Independence Hall. In the mid 1980s, following the original publication of this paper, Milt Rothman went back to Independence Hall. He later informed the author that he had identified the specific door that they are standing in front of. Herbert E. Goudket took the photograph. John V. Baltadonis, who also attended the convention, had not arrived at the time the picture was taken. For further discussion, see page 30.   • Hydra Club of New York
    We mentioned in our Opening Comments that one of the fans we met at Aussiecon, Justine Larbalestier, was doing research for a new book on the New York Futurians fan group of the 1930s and `40s. New York City fandom has a very long and complex history, and the Futurians is one its most famous organizations. Many of its members went on, in later decades, to become famous as professional writers. This leads us more or less directly to the next article, another in Dave Kyle's series of autobiographical remembrances. The time of the late 1940s and early 1950s, when this article takes place, was when perhaps the most exclusive of all the dozens of New York fan clubs existed... From time to time I've been asked to tell about my life around the famous Hydra Club of New York. But recalling events comprehensively from a half century ago requires much more than a good memory. There are two essential ingredients needed to accurately shape my recollections -- written records and an old fellow participant from those days of yore to chat with, preferably one who is still of sound mind. As a former Chairman of the club, I do have quite a few records. Unfortunately, in my search for them, I find many (maybe most?) are buried in my boxes of papers, accumulated in my years as a human jackdaw. Someday I will sort them out, but not soon enough for this article. As for former Hydrites (not my term), there are so few of us left. Would that I could sit with one or more and feed on our awakened reminiscences.
