High Commission of India Gaborone PRESS RELEASE

INDIAN DIASPORA CONTRIBUTES MORE THAN 20 MILLION PULA IN BOTSWANA’S COVID-19 RELIEF FUND

The spread of COVID-19 pandemic has unfolded an unprecedented tragedy in modern history, bringing untold misery to millions; resulting in a great loss of lives and global economic contraction, virtually shuttering the world in less than three months.

The Government of the Republic of Botswana has successfully prevented any major loss of lives by timely strategic interventions implemented in a true democratic manner. The impact of this scourge of COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating for all nations and the people as a whole have united in their efforts to control its spread and also contribute to assist the communities of their residence.

Indian Diaspora in Botswana has been a part of the Batswana society for generations. In these testing times, the community has risen to the occasion by punctiliously following the prescribed guidelines during the ‘State of Emergency’ and responsibly shouldering their part to facilitate their Batswana brethren in facing this pandemic. Though the Indian origin community in Botswana is relatively small in number, so far it has generated a contribution of more than Twenty Million Pula (in both Cash and Kind) by individuals and companies/ entities, to the COVID-19 RELIEF FUND set-up by the Government of Botswana. The contributors not only include individual persons, but also big and small companies, religious organisations as well as cultural & community associations of Indian Diaspora. The High Commission of India not only hopes, but also believes that the Indian Diaspora will continue its efforts with contributions to the local economy as also assisting in the nation’s fast economic revitalization to restore the overall growth and development. India and Botswana share the common aspirations of universal progress and prosperity. Both the countries have been consistent, reliable and trusted partners in various developmental projects; sharing similar approaches to global issues. COVID-19 pandemic has come as a challenge to humanity which will be overcome by increasing cooperation on all international forums. On behalf of the Government of India, the High Commission reiterates its commitment to be a steadfast developmental partner of the Republic of Botswana. Simultaneously, it reaches out to the Indian Diaspora for re-dedicating their efforts to ensuring a quick bounce-back; contributing to the COVID-19 relief efforts and live by the age-old Indian philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – ‘The World is One Family’.
