This year’s Outlook for the Intercity Bus Industry report draws attention to some of the industry’s changing fundamentals while also looking at notable developments anticipated this year and beyond. Our analysis evaluates the industry in six areas: i) The status of bus travel booking through January 2021; ii) Notable marketing and service developments of 2020; iii) The decline of the national bus network sold on greyhound.com that is relied upon by travelers on thousands of routes across the U.S. -

windwardle The Official Newsletter of the Spring 1988 International Sunfish® Class Association Vol. II, No. 6 · ~ : . .I RETROSPECT: Jack Evans Looks Back (Part 1) ~ by Charlot Ras-A/lard It's hard to believe that the Sunfish (and its predecessor, the Sailfish) dates back 40 years. Twenty five North American champions have been crowned, and countless sailors from the America's Cup on down have raced the 'Fish at some point. Few had the vantage points that Jack Evans had. The scoreboard shows he garnered four Sailfish national titles between 1967 and 1970, was runner up at the 1974 Force 5 North Americans, won the first Super Sunfish North American Championship in 1975, sailed the C-Ciass catamaran, Weathercock, at the 1972 Little America's Cup in Australia, and, of course, earned the right to sail with a silver Sunfish on his sail at the 1972 North Americans at Sayville. Evans gained another perspective through his work " wearing many hats" at Alcort from 1969-1977, most notably as Class Secretary from 1969-1975. He later went on to: design and market the Phantom, become a Regional Sales Representative for Hobie, write the book " Techniques of One-Design Rac ing, " and testify in a Congressional hearing on the merits of Micron 33 while working at International Paint, Inc. Currently, he is employed by Beckson Marine, Inc. in Bridgeport, Connecticut. ) caught up with Jack at the 1988 New York Boat Show and later at his home in Guilford, Connecticut, reuniting after a "few" years. In part 1, I take a look back at the Sunfish and its past. -

Replacing Amtrak: Privatization, Regionalization, and Liquidation

By its own admission, Amtrak is headed for bankruptcy unless Washington provides another multi-billion-dollar bail-out. Another federal rescue is A unjustified considering that federal and state subsidies to Amtrak since its inception in 1971 are nearing $22.5 billion, an amount out of proportion to Amtrak’s usefulness in most of the nation. The federal government does not run a national airline. It doesn’t operate a national bus company. There’s no justification for a national railroad passenger operation. America needs passenger trains in selected areas, but doesn’t need Amtrak’s antiquated route system, poor service, unreasonable operating deficits, and capital investment program with low rates of return. Amtrak’s failures result in part because it is a public monopoly—the very type of organization least able to innovate. This study reveals an Amtrak credibility crisis in the way it reports ridership figures, glosses over dwindling market share, understates subsidies, issues misleading cost-recovery claims, offers doubtful promises regarding high-speed rail, lacks proper authority for the freight business it recently launched, and misrepresents privatization as its applies to Amtrak. It’s time to liquidate Amtrak, privatize and regionalize parts of it, permit alternative operators to transform some long-distance trains into land-cruise trains, and stop service on hopeless routes. -

For Immediate Release: Contact: Lt. William D. Walsh Distracted Driving Enforcement and Education Campaign UDrive. UText. UPay. to be carried out locally from April 1 – April 21, 2017 VOORHEES -- Law enforcement officers from the Voorhees Police Department will be cracking down on distracted drivers during April as part of New Jersey’s UDrive. UText. UPay. enforcement campaign. Beginning April 1 and running through April 21, the high visibility law enforcement initiative will target motorists who engage in dangerous distracted driving behaviors such as talking on hand-held cell phones and sending text messages while driving. “Distracted driving is a serious issue on our roadways,” said Gary Poedubicky, Acting Director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2014 alone, 3,179 people were killed in distracted driving crashes and an estimated 431,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver.” Despite the fact that using a hand held cell phone or texting while driving is illegal in New Jersey, the practice appears to be widespread. In a recent survey conducted by the FDU PublicMind Poll for the Division of Highway Traffic Safety, 67% of respondents said they “very often” see people driving and talking on a hand held cell phone. 42% of respondents said they “very often” see driver’s texting. The campaign is being carried out during the month of April, which the National Safety Council has designated as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The New Jersey campaign is modeled after similar successful high visibility enforcement programs such as Click It or Ticket and Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.
