The NMDOT Traffic Safety Division Updates Driver Education Motor APR-JUN 2021 The NMDOT Traffic Safety Division Updates Driver Education SOURCE: https://www.myhighplains.com/news/new-mexico/new-mexico- department-of-transportation-traffic-safety-division-updates-driver-education/ The New Mexico Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Division (NMDOT TSD) is working with driving schools across the state to complete driver education training while adhering to health and safety orders. “The pandemic has forced a lot of families and driving schools to suspend driver education courses,” said Transportation Secretary Mike Sandoval. “Getting a license has also been an issue because students couldn’t complete their in-person driving instruction or make an appointment to test with the MVD offices to attain their licenses,” adds Sandoval. “Now that students can resume one-on one driving instruction, they can progress through the Graduated Driver Licensing system.” The NMDOT’s Traffic Safety Division (TSD) oversees all driver education programs statewide. All teens under the age of 18 must complete one of three programs to obtain a driver permit and license in New Mexico. • Teens may complete 30 hours of classroom instruction with seven hours of behind the wheel training with a certified instructor. This format is offered by private driving schools. • Complete 56 hours of classroom instruction. These are high school elective courses. • Complete 56 hours of NMDOT-approved correspondence education through a home-based program and students must apply for permission prior to enrollment. The department has directed, said the announcement, all driving schools to follow current emergency public health orders and COVID-19 safe practices and guidance. High schools are directed to provide a hybrid model of in-person instruction and virtual learning or complete virtual instruction. Teenage drivers are 3 times as likely as those 20 or older to be involved in a fatal crash. Those deaths are often the result of single-vehicle crashes caused by speeding or other errors that cause the driver to lose control. Because teens most often drive older, cheaper vehicles, they’re also less likely to benefit from proven crash prevention technologies like automatic emergency braking (AEB) — which is expected to be installed in less than a quarter of the vehicles on U.S. roads by 2023 despite a major push from manufacturers. But AEB and other features like blind spot monitoring systems and sensors that warn the driver when the vehicle is drifting out of its lane are becoming more and more common on the cars that their parents drive and they learn on. "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2014 alone, 3,179 people were killed in distracted driving crashes and an estimated 431,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver.” Despite the fact that using a hand held cell phone or texting while driving is illegal in New Jersey, the practice appears to be widespread. In a recent survey conducted by the FDU PublicMind Poll for the Division of Highway Traffic Safety, 67% of respondents said they “very often” see people driving and talking on a hand held cell phone. 42% of respondents said they “very often” see driver’s texting. The campaign is being carried out during the month of April, which the National Safety Council has designated as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The New Jersey campaign is modeled after similar successful high visibility enforcement programs such as Click It or Ticket and Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

    NHTSA Drowsy Driving Research and Program Plan Safer drivers. Safer cars. Safer roads. NHTSA Drowsy Driving Research and Program Plan | 1 This Drowsy Driving Research and Program Plan was developed to guide the efforts of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over the next several years. This is the first time that NHTSA has developed an initiative directed at curtailing drowsy driving. The plan includes Background and Overview sections and it addresses six broad focus areas: Measurement and Problem Identification, Public Awareness and Education, Policy Development, High-Risk Populations, Vehicle Technology, and Infrastructure. A total of 10 projects are included under these focus areas. Each project will be underway by late 2016. Some have short-term outcomes, whereas others will be long-term. This plan is an initial effort by NHTSA to enhance the science and program initiatives around drowsy driving. DOT HS 812 252 March 2016 2 | NHTSA Drowsy Driving Research and Program Plan Introduction Sleepiness is an inescapable biological phenomenon that has drastic effects on the mind and body. Whether sleepiness is caused by sleep restriction due to a baby crying all night, a late shift at work, a teenager staying up all night with friends, health issues such as sleep apnea and medications, or our natural circadian rhythm – the negative outcomes can be the same. Most importantly, the longer someone remains awake, the more probable the negative outcomes become. Sleepiness, with- out fail, results in cognitive and behavioral changes that can contribute to diverse negative outcomes including automobile crashes, poor school performance, accidents at work, and other long-term physical and mental health consequences.
