A MESSAGE FROM THE SENIOR DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC SAFETY As the Senior Director of Public Safety, I am responsible for the leadership, management, planning, organization, and administration of the Berklee Public Safety Department (“BPS” or the “Department”). In addition to coordinating safety and security services provided to the Berklee (or the “college”) community, I am the college’s liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement and safety agencies. It is also my responsibility to see that the college’s students, faculty, staff, and visitors recognize that the Department is a resource that is available to all members of the Berklee community. The federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the “Clery Act”), 20 U.S.C. § 1092, requires that certain colleges and universities publish an annual report concerning various campus safety-related policies and procedures. As the senior director of Public Safety, it is my responsibility to oversee preparation and publication of this report by the Operations Department at the Valencia campus. The Department assembles statistics for this report based on its own records, communications with the Palau de les Arts Security Department, the Student Affairs Office, local law enforcement, and information derived from other various campus security authorities at the Valencia campus. These communications are directed at acquiring information necessary to the college’s effort to disclose annual crime statistics to the Berklee community concerning our Valencia location. Following is Berklee Valencia’s 2014 Annual Security Report. Paper copies of this report are available upon request, and the report is available online at berklee.edu/sites/ default/files/ValenciaASR.pdf. An email notification is sent to all active Valencia students, faculty, and staff that provide a direct web link to this report. Requests for paper copies of the report may be submitted via email to [email protected], or made in person at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia–Anexo Sur, Avenida Profesor Lopez Pinero, 1, 46013 Valencia, Spain. Prospective employees and students may similarly obtain copies of the report through direct requests to the Public Safety Department. As it is with your experience at our Boston campus, your safety and well-being are important features of your overseas experiences in Valencia, and your welfare while abroad is every bit as important to the college as it is when you are in Boston. Please review the safety-related information and statistics in this report, and please remember that while you study in Spain, you are subject to Spanish laws. BERKLEE PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT BPS is responsible for campus safety, security, law enforcement, and emergency response on the Boston campus. It is the Department’s mission to provide a complement of services designed to enhance campus security and safety so that Berklee remains an enriching environment in which it is safe to live, study, and work. BPS shift commanders and command personnel administer day-to-day operations of the Department. Although located in Boston, BPS works closely with the Valencia campus to assist in enhancing safety and improving quality of life. DESCRIPTION OF THE OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT In coordination with Berklee’s Public Safety Department in Boston, the Operations Department (“OD”) in Valencia is responsible for campus safety, security, and emergency response at that location. It is the OD’s mission to provide a complement of services and programs to help facilitate safety and an enriching work, study, and living experience. Due to the Valencia campus location and the unique demands of the program, the OD is comprised of Berklee staff supplemented by the contract security com pany, contract security officers who patrol the Valencia campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week while the program is in session. The Senior Director of Operations is the senior command level officer within the OD and reports to the college’s chief financial officer/senior vice president of Administration and Finance. LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITY AND INTERAGENCY RELATIONSHIPS The contract security company has limited law enforcement rights provided under the Spanish Law of Private Security (Ley de 23/1992 de Seguridad Privada). The contract security company and Berklee main tain cooperative working relationships with La Policia Nacional Espana (the Spanish National Police), La Comisaria de Policia de Valencia (the Valen cia local municipal police), local consulates, and relevant elements of the Spanish criminal justice sys tem. This Institutional Master Plan Notification Form presents the Conservatory’s current proposal to demolish the building at 132 Ipswich Street and to construct the same amount of space as originally proposed in a three story building on about half the 18,700 SF site. This change is necessary because extensive engineering analysis of the structure and other building conditions undertaken during the due diligence period prior to closing on the purchase determined that reuse of the existing building was not feasible.
