JKT48 as the New Wave of Japanization in Indonesia Rizky Soraya Dadung Ibnu Muktiono English Department, Universitas Airlangga Abstract This paper discusses the cultural elements of JKT48, the first idol group in Indonesia adopting its Japanese sister group‘s, AKB48, concept. Idol group is a Japanese genre of pop idol. Globalization is commonly known to trigger transnational corporations as well as to make the spreading of cultural value and capitalism easier. Thus, JKT48 can be seen as the result of the globalization of AKB48. It is affirmed by the group management that JKT48 will reflect Indonesian cultures to make it a unique type of idol group, but this statement seems problematic as JKT48 seems to be homogenized by Japanese cultures in a glance. Using multiple proximities framework by La Pastina and Straubhaar (2005), this study aims to present the extent of domination of Japanese culture occurs in JKT48 by comparing cultural elements of AKB48 and JKT48. The author observed the videos footages and conducted online survey and interviews to JKT48 fans. The research shows there are many similarities between AKB48 and JKT48 as sister group. It is then questioned how the fans achieved proximity in JKT48 which brings foreign culture and value. The research found that JKT48 is the representation of AKB48 in Indonesia with Japanese cultural values and a medium to familiarize Japanese culture to Indonesia. Keywords: JKT48, AKB48, idol group, multiple proximities, homogenization Introduction “JKT48 will reflect the Indonesian cultures to fit as a new and unique type of idol group”. (JKT48 Operational Team, 2011) “JKT48 will become a bridge between Indonesia and Japan”.

EQUITY RESEARCH | October 4, 2016 MUSIC IN THE AIR PAINT IT BLACK Avoiding the prisoner’s dilemma and assessing the risks to music’s UBLE DO M nascent turnaround ALBU The complicated web of competing interests in the music industry poses a threat to the budding turnaround that we expect to almost double global music revenue over the next 15 years. In this second of a “double album“ on the music industry’s return to growth, we assess the risks and scenarios that could derail our thesis, from the risk of “windowing” and exclusivity turning off fans to an acceleration in declines for physical CDs and downloads that would come too fast for streaming to fill the void in the near term. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND Literally art has many kinds and varieties. Literally art is divided into a novel, short story, poetry, etc. Literally art is an individual emotion based on experience and expressed into literally writing. One of literally art is Poetry. Poetry is a common language and almost as ancient (Perrine & Arp, 1974). Poetry itself has a lot of meaning. Poetry is defined by sounds and combined with imaginative words. According to Perrine & Arp (1974), poetry might be defined as a kind of language that says more intensely than does ordinary language (p. 553). Poetry and song lyrics are related. The song arrangements are a combination of poetry and musical elements. The songs will be strings of a poem if musical elements are removed. The writer wants to combine poetry and Japanese culture related to Japanese music. Nowadays, Japanese culture is popular in the world. Chinese fu-sui has influenced different areas of Japanese culture from the layout of cities in the Heian period (794-1185) to court music (Slaymaker & Martinez, 2006). One of the biggest Japanese cultures is J-Pop. According to Shun (2008) “J-Pop has grown exponentially, affecting nearly every aspect of popular culture in not only Japan but countries like Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Phillipines among many others. Anime, television shows, and video games regularly use JPop theme songs and voice actors while movies are repeatedly made featuring top stars from the genreu” J-pop itself includes Japanese Idol. Idols are mostly girls portrayed for their "cuteness" and "innocence"; they are mostly intended to 8 be role models everyone adores (Kelly, 2004).

Young Students’ Views of Idols’ Romances: Differences between AKB48 and Sakamichi Group Fans Yutaka Ueda 成蹊大学一般研究報告 第 51 巻第 7 分冊 令和2年2月 BULLETIN OF SEIKEI UNIVERSITY, Vol. 51 No. 7 February, 2020 BULLETIN OF SEIKEI UNIVERSITY Vol.51 1 Young Students’ Views of Idols’ Romances: Differences between AKB48 and Sakamichi Group Fans1 Yutaka UEDA Abstract This study examines young students’ views of idols’ romances. Statistical analysis of data collected from 171 university students reveals that the Sakamichi group is more popular among students than the AKB48 group; students tend to require idols to have comprehensive features and accept idols’ past romances. They also consider many idols to have a secret significant other and are not opposed to them concealing the secret. Regression analysis also finds that fans of the Sakamichi group, particularly those of Nogizaka46, show a tendency for romantic fixation on a particular member, and female students have a more realistic view of idols’ romances. Keywords: Nogizaka46, Keyakizaka46, Hinatazaka46, AKB48, idol 1. Introduction The performances of contemporary female idol groups, particularly the AKB48 and Sakamichi groups (the latter comprising Nogizaka46 (乃木坂46), Keyakizaka46 (欅坂46), and Hinatazaka46 (日向坂46)) are outstanding. Sales of their CD-DVDs almost always pass the million mark. The number of views of Keyakizaka46’s Kuroi Hitsuji (Black Sheep) on YouTube exceeded 13 million by the end of September 2019. Nogizaka46 received the Japan Record Award consecutively in 2017 and 2018, and AKB48 also received this award in 2011 and 2012. Individual members of these female idol groups have also had impressive careers. Some of them are active not only as singers but also as movie stars.

DINAMIKA PEMUJAAN IDOLA (IDOL WORSHIP) DALAM FANDOM JKT48 Dwi Anggraini 4825110132 Skripsi Ini Disusun Untuk Memenuhi Persyaratan dalam Mendapatkan Gelar Sarjana Sosial (S.Sos) PROGRAM STUDI SOSIOLOGI (KONSENTRASI SOSIOLOGI PEMBANGUNAN) JURUSAN SOSIOLOGI FAKULTAS ILMU SOSIAL UNIVERSITAS NEGERI JAKARTA 2015 ABSTRAK Dwi Anggraini, Dinamika Pemujaan Idola (Idol Worship) dalam Fandom JKT48. Skripsi. Jakarta : Program Studi Sosiologi (Konsentrasi Pembangunan), Jurusan Sosiologi, Fakultas Ilmu Sosial, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, 2015.
