INVENTORY OF PAPERS OF WILLIAM F. THOMPSON (1888-1965) FROM THE FILES OF ROBERT L. BURGNER Accession Number 2597-6 These papers and manuscripts from the files of Professor Robert L. Burgner consist of two parts. The first group contains both original and carbon copies of Thompson's correspondence and manuscript reports from the period 1912-1965 (Folders 1-9). The second set consists of published or processed reports by Thompson (and a few reports from others) during this same period (Folders 10-12). Folder 1. Original letters and hand written report by Thompson when he was employed ( 1912-1917) by the British Columbia Provincial Fisheries Department. a. Thompson to John Pease Babcock, dated Victoria 8 July 1912. He transmitted a hand written report on the oysters and other shellfish of Oyster Harbor, B.C. (attached). (Two reports on the shellfish of British Columbia were published by Thompson in 1913.) b. D. L. McIntyre (BCPFD) to Thompson, dated Victoria 28 Jan 1913 . acknowledged receipt of Thompson's report dealing with clams. c. D. L. McIntyre to Thompson, dated Victoria 14 April 1914. Forwarded a check for $100 to Thompson to serve as an advance for his travel expenses. d. Certificate of membership in American Association for the Advancement of Science dated 22 December 1914. e. John P. Babcock to Thompson, dated Victoria 19 May 1915. Letter is about a paper to be published by Thompson. Folder 2. Mostly original typed correspondence of Thompson during his work with the California Fish and Game Commission (1917-1924). a. Carl Chesterfield to Thompson, dated San Francisco 21 February 1917. This letter offered Thompson a job with the California Fish and Game Commission. b. Thompson to Fish and Game Commission, dated San Francisco 21 February 1917. Thompson accepted job offer from the Commission. c. Notice of"Call and to Appear for Physical Examination, Local Board", dated Los Angeles 17 August 1917. d. Certificate of Discharge from Military Service, dated Los Angeles 22 October 1917. 1 . .,, ;I· e. Thompson to W. E. Ritter, dated Long Beach 8 October 1917. He responded to Ritter who disputed Thompson's published work on albacore. Ritter was a prominent oceanographer and professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. f Ritter to Thompson, dated La Jolla 11 October 1917 in which he thanks Thompson for his letter of the 8th October containing further information. g. Ritter to Thompson, dated La Jolla 24 October 1917. Ritter talked with N. B. Scofield (Thompson's supervisor) and wished to talk further with Thompson about the albacore data (Not dated, but likely written after 24 October and before 11 November 1917). h. Thompson to Ritter, dated tong Beach 11 November 1917. Thompson sent his published report on albacore to Ritter and discussed his data. Pencil note "No answer received, WFT." 1. Thompson to Ritter, dated Long Beach 16 December 1917. Thompson acknowledged receipt of letter. J. Thompson to (N.B.) Scofield, dated 16 December 1917. Thompson explained to Scofield the major points of Ritter's comments and WFT's opinions. Thompson would not respond to Ritter until Scofield and Thompson discuss the matter. k. Thompson to (N. B.) Scofield, dated Long Beach 30 December 1917. Thompson forwarded to Scofield his response to Ritter's letter. Attachment of 10 pages. I. Scofield to Thompson, dated San Francisco 8 January 1918. Scofield received, but had not yet read, Thompson's letter concerning Ritter. m~ Thompson to Scofield, dated Long Beach 9 January 1918. Five-page letter about various items, including the "Ritter" issue. n. Babcock to Thompson, dated Victoria 9 Jan.1918. Regarding a WFT publication and other misc. o. Charles Henry Gilbert to Thompson, dated Stanford University 14 January 1918. Gilbert has heard about the "attack" on Thompson by Ritter. Gilbert offered encouragement (Gilbert was WFT's major professor). p. Thompson to Babcock, dated Long Beach 17 January 1918. General letter and inquiry about Babcock's trip to Washington, D.C. q. H.F. Moore to Babcock, dated Washington, D. C. 4 February 1918. Moore (U.S. Bureau of Fisheries) thanked Babcock for information about Thompson. r. R. E. Coker to Thompson, dated Washington, D.C. 4 February 1918. Coker (U. S. Bureau ofFisheries) planned to be in California soon and would like to meet with WFT. s. Coker to Thompson and Thompson to Coker dated 13 and 14 February 1918 arranged for meeting. t. Thompson to Scofield, dated Long Beach 23 February 1918. WFT briefed Scofield on Coker's visit. Coker enquired ofWFT ifhe were interested in joining the Bureau and WFT used this letter to inform Scofield and to argue for a permanent appointment with the State. 2 u. Thompson to Babcock dated Long Beach 13 March 1918. Thompson informed Babcock of the meeting with Coker. WFT heard that the federal government would not offer him a job so as to remain on good terms with the state. Much more detail here. v. Thompson to Scofield, dated San Pedro 7 June 1921. Thompson argued for pay increases for some of his employee's who are looking for higher pay elsewhere. w. Telegram from Henry O'Malley to Thompson, dated Washington, D.C. 11 November 1924. Requested Thompson's presence at first meeting of International Fisheries Commission in Seattle on 20 November. Bureau of Fisheries will pay all WFT' s expenses. Folder 3. Letters from /to Thompson at the International Fisheries Commission, Seattle. a.--Memo from M. Lyle Spencer, President UW, to Thompson, dated 13 January 1930. Letter asked WFT for his opinions on five possible candidates for Dean of the College of Fisheries: b.--Copy oftetter from Thompson to Spencer, dated Seattle 18 January 1930. Thompson suggested a thorough review of what the University wanted in a College of Fisheries. Folder 4. Original and copies ofletters concerning Thompson and the Fraser River • salmon "controversy." Letters about Thompson's appointment as a "consultant" to the IPSFC. a. Ms. by George A. Rounsefell [n.d., but ca 1947] on sockeye salmon of the Fraser River that criticized WFT and IPSFC. Letters (1947-1948) from WFT to R. Van Cleve (and vice) about Rounsefell's paper. Letter from Van Cleve to Carl Hubbs about Rounsefell's paper. b. Bulletin containing Ricker's paper that criticized Thompson's Hells Gate work. Parts I and II of Thompson's response to Ricker's criticism. Letters from WFT to Van Cleve ( and vice) on this criticism and various other matters. c. Letters from IPSFC concerning Thompson's resignation as Director and his employment as a "consultant." Folder 5. Concerning the early years (1945-1957) of the Fisheries Research Institute a. Mostly copies of letters and contracts from Alaska Salmon Industry (ASI) to UW for FRI work in Southeastern Alaska, 1945-51. Letters from ASI to President Allen of UW re FRI. Text of speech of Dean E. R. Guthrie to ASI, 1950. 3 • -,· b. Letter from W. C. Arnold, ASI, to Thompson, dated 26 ·september 1957 stating that ASI would not be funding FRI research in the future. Folder 6. Thompson and the Advisory Board to FRI, 1952-1955 (ca 200 p.). a. Carbon copies of letters, documents, and budgets sent to Advisory Board by Thompson. Thompson's letters explained to the Board what the FRI program would be for that year and the purpose of the studies. Some ofWFT's remarks were "candid." Some handwritten notes likely byWFT. b. Copies ofletters (1952) from Clint Atkinson, FWS, Montlake Laboratory, Seattle, to Thompson proposing closer relations with FRI. FWS wanted FRI to participate in designing commercial fisheries regulations, a request Thompson rejected. Folder 7. Letters from Thompson to the Department of Interior about Alaska salmon research, 1955. a. Thompson to Orme Lewis, Under Secretary, U.S. Dept. Interior, 12 February 1955. Attached is "A program for salmon research in Alaska," 9 p., dated 12 Feb. 1955. b. John L. Farley, Director, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, dated 2 March 1955 to WFT acknowledged receipt of proposal. Folder 8. Thompson and the Makah Indian Tribe, 1954-1959 a. Copy ofletter from Thompson to Assistant Attorney General, Department of Justice, dated 5 August 1954 about Makah Tribe vs. United States. b. Copy of letter from Department of Justice to UW President Odegaard that thanked Thompson for his service as a consultant to the Department of Justice in the matter of"The Makah Indian Tribe vs.US." Folder 9. Material related to Dr. Thompson's retirement from the UW September 1958. a. Material about his retirement dinner, vita, testimonials, list of publications, etc . b.
