This article uses China’s national trunk mountain system as a natural experi- ment to explore the connection between spatial adjacency of mountains and cultural difference landscapes. Our spatial design documents that the presence of mountains widens the linguistic difference between two cit- ies located on the opposite mountain sides, particularly when they are adjacent to administrative borders. The effect dwindles as spatial contiguity margins between city pairs increases. The results shed light on the impor- tance of conceptualizing geographic contextual constraints to the configuration of cultural difference land- scapes. In this study, we modeled the distributional dynamics of a critically endangered montane shrub Lonicera oblata in response to climate change under different periods by building a comprehensive habitat suitability model considering the effects of soil and vegetation conditions. Our results indicated that the current suitable habitats for L. oblata are located scarcely in North China. Historical modeling indicated that L. oblata achieved its maximum potential distribution in the last interglacial period which covered southwest China, while its distribution area decreased for almost 50% during the last glacial maximum. It further contracted during the middle Holocene to a distribution resembling the current pattern. Future modeling showed that the suitable habitats of L. oblata contracted dramatically, and populations were fragmentedly distributed in these areas. In synoptic climatology, along with subjective or manual approaches, objective or automated approaches are widely used synoptic weather typing procedures to identify recurring map patterns or variable groups that typify significant modes of circulation and to classify each case into one of these modes (Yarnal, 1993; Huth et al., 2008). There are many objective methods, such as correlation-based map-pattern technique, sums-of-squares method, rotated principal component analysis, hierarchical clustering (average linkage or Ward’s clustering), and K-means clustering. As suggested by Yarnal (1993) and Huth (1996), all the methods proved to be capable of yielding meaningful classifications and none of them can be thought of as the best in all aspects.

Foguangsi on Mount Wutai: Architecture of Politics and Religion Abstract Foguangsi (Monastery of Buddha’s Radiance) is a monastic complex that stands on a high terrace on a mountainside, in the southern ranges of Mount Wutai, located in present-day Shanxi province. The mountain range of Wutai has long been regarded as the sacred abode of the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī and a prominent center of the Avataṃsaka School. Among the monasteries that have dotted its landscape, Foguangsi is arguably one of the best-known sites that were frequented by pilgrims. The er discovery of Foguangsi by modern scholars in the early 20th century has been considered a “crowning moment in the modern search for China’s ancient architecture”. Most notably, the Buddha Hall, which was erected in the Tang dynasty (618-907 CE), was seen as the ideal of a “vigorous style” of its time, and an embodiment of an architectural achievement at the peak of Chinese civilization.

    INITIAL POVERTY AND SOCIAL ANALYSIS Country: People’s Republic of China Program Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Air Quality Improvement Title: Program Lending/Financing Policy-Based Department/ East Asia Department/ Modality: Division: Public Management, Financial Sector and Regional Cooperation Division I. POVERTY IMPACT AND SOCIAL DIMENSIONS A. Links to the National Poverty Reduction Strategy and Country Partnership Strategy The program aims to reduce emissions of particulate matter of less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5) in Hebei province, which would contribute to overall air quality improvement in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region and further to the east. The expected outputs of the program are policy actions for: (i) reducing emissions from major pollution sources; (ii) environmental policy and institutional framework for implementation; and (iii) reemployment support for inclusive industrial restructuring. The proposed program is aligned with the government action plan on air pollution prevention and control. The program supports the Twelfth Five-Year Plan of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), 2011–2015 on environmental improvement, especially on air quality, and is expected to continue during the PRC’s Thirteenth Five-Year Plan. The program also supports the Development- oriented Poverty Reduction for China’s Rural Areas, 2011–2020, which promotes poverty reduction through environmentally friendly urbanization and balanced resource allocation to avoid disproportional impacts on the poor. The program is (i) aligned with the (a) country partnership strategy, 2011–2015 of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the PRC; (b) ADB’s new PRC country partnership strategy, 2016–2020, currently under preparation; and (c) its paper on a new partnership with upper middle-income countries; and (ii) consistent with ADB’s environment operational directions, which promote investing in natural capital to ensure that environmental goods and services can sustain future economic growth.a B.
