  • Technical Constraints and TV Series As the Main Narrative Genre of the Audiovisual Era
Comparatismi 3 2018 ISSN 2531-7547 http://dx.doi.org/10.14672/20181442 Technical Constraints and TV Series as the Main Narrative Genre of the Audiovisual Era Carlotta Susca Abstract • By enlarging the concept of literariness to the concept of narrativity, it is possible to look at narrative genres instead than literary genres. Major changes in the creation of stories have always been depending on technical constraints: epic was the main poetic genre of orality, novel the main literary genre fostered by literacy, and TV series are the main audiovisual genre. TV series are composed by a superimposition of semiotic levels (images, sounds, and texts); accordingly, they require a competent audience that is committed to a united hermeneutic effort. Twin Peaks, the TV series created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, is a complex narrative enthusiastically analyzed by an active fan base on online forums. Keywords • TV Series; Narrative Genres; Twin Peaks Technical Constraints and TV Series as the Main Narrative Genre of the Audiovisual Era Carlotta Susca 1. Literariness and Narrativity By the 1920s, both Roman Jakobson and Viktor Šklovskij proposed the concepts of literariness and the poetic function of language, which characterized poetic texts among other forms of verbal communication. According to the definition of literariness, every text—not only a work of art—could possess it, as long as it’s defamiliarized to some degree. The contemporary concept of narrativity allows a further enlargement of the poetic field to messages elaborated on and transmitted by media other than paper or electronic texts, and not entirely made of words, so gaining audiovisual narratives full citizenship of poetic creation.

Since the introduction of Dolby sound in the mid 1970s we have experienced a significant development in the quality of playback systems in cinemas, which means that we are now more clearly able to hear the breathing performance of an actor.

  • Built Environment in Cinema and Why Architects Should Watch Films
Reinventing the Truth Built environment in cinema and TIBERIU ION why architects should watch fi lms 16060192 An exploration of the existential experience of space in fi lm and architecture INTRODUCTION [4] Architectural design is a combination of art and science; however, unlike an artist, an architect is required to comply with a plethora of design legislations and regulations, which when combined with the pressures of cost and time on a typical project, can impede creativity [1]. According to Anthony Vidler [2], architecture and fi lm are interlinked as modernist architecture functioned like a psychologic mechanism, building its subject in time and space just like cinema. It seems that perhaps a lack of experimentation and the growth of a culture of narrow-mindedness have led to a stagnant period in modern architecture. A subtly noticed trend [5] seems to be the placement of a kind of agenda before creativity, and not always the good kind. The existing SUMMARY literature makes the point that translating meaning across visual mediums results is detrimental and in both end products The aim of this work was to discuss potential aspects that losing some if not all of their original nuance. could be implemented from one medium (fi lm) to the other (architecture). The study of some of the most infl uential and innovative director’s oeuvres - Michelangelo Antonioni, Stanley Kubrick, According to Palasmaa [6], design can be improved by Andrei Tarkovsky, and David Lynch - formed the basis of this exploiting and exploring the concept of existential space, using research. fi lm as a medium to poeticise the existential experience of space because fi lm projects a broad range of human emotions.

Alienating the familiar with CGI: A recipe for making a full CGI Art House animated feature. Paul Charisse (Director) Eldon Building, Winston Churchill Avenue, Portsmouth, PO1 2DJ, UK Email [email protected] Alex Councell (Motion Capture Supervisor) Eldon Building, Winston Churchill Avenue, Portsmouth, PO1 2DJ, UK Email [email protected] This paper is an exploration of the processes used and ideas behind an animated full CGI feature film project that attempts to reach blockbuster production values, while retaining Art House sensibilities. It examines methods used to achieve these production values in an academic production environment and ways costs can be minimized, but high quality levels retained. It also examines its status as an Art House project, by comparing its narrative design and use of symbolism to existing works of Art House cinema. Introduction Figure 1. Stina’s epiphany. From the “Stina & the Wolf” trailer (©University of Portsmouth) Making feature films is an expensive business and making animated full CGI feature films is particularly so. Films which fall under the banner of “Art House” traditionally do not have the budget of their blockbuster counterparts. Our project is an ambitious attempt to make and finance a full CGI feature film that combines blockbuster production values with Art House sensibilities. It is an animated, motion-captured magical realist adventure, that we hope takes CGI to a place it has never been before: CGI Art House cinema. Our feature is called "Stina and the Wolf" and its accompanying short film is “Uncle Griot”. They are the result of a combined student and lecturer project at the University of Portsmouth in the UK.

  • Bamcinématek Presents Indie 80S, a Comprehensive, 60+ Film Series Highlighting the Decade Between 70S New Hollywood and the 90S Indie Boom, Jul 17—Aug 27
BAMcinématek presents Indie 80s, a comprehensive, 60+ film series highlighting the decade between 70s New Hollywood and the 90s indie boom, Jul 17—Aug 27 Co-presented by Cinema Conservancy The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/June 11, 2015—From Friday, July 17 through Thursday, August 27, BAMcinématek and Cinema Conservancy present Indie 80s, a sweeping survey of nearly 70 films from the rough-and-tumble early days of modern American independent cinema. An aesthetic and political rebuke to the greed-is-good culture of bloated blockbusters and the trumped-up monoculture of Reagan-era America, Indie 80s showcases acclaimed works like Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise (1984—Jul 18), David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986—Aug 8), and Steven Soderbergh’s sex, lies, and videotape (1989—Aug 14) alongside many lesser- known but equally accomplished works that struggled to find proper distribution in the era before studio classics divisions. Filmmakers including Ross McElwee, William Lustig, Rob Nilsson, and more will appear in person to discuss their work. Like the returning expatriate’s odyssey in Robert Kramer’s four-hour road movie Route One/USA (1989—Aug 16), a sampling of 80s indie cinema comprises an expansive journey through the less-traveled byways of America. From the wintry Twin Cities of the improvised, hilariously profane road trip Patti Rocks (1988—Aug 25) to the psychopath’s stark Chicago hunting grounds in John McNaughton’s Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986—Jul 29) to the muggy Keys of Florida in filmmaker Victor Nuñez’s eco-thriller A Flash of Green (1984—Aug 12), regional filmmakers’ cameras canvassed an America largely invisible to Hollywood.

  • 101 Films for Filmmakers
101 (OR SO) FILMS FOR FILMMAKERS The purpose of this list is not to create an exhaustive list of every important film ever made or filmmaker who ever lived. That task would be impossible. The purpose is to create a succinct list of films and filmmakers that have had a major impact on filmmaking. A second purpose is to help contextualize films and filmmakers within the various film movements with which they are associated. The list is organized chronologically, with important film movements (e.g. Italian Neorealism, The French New Wave) inserted at the appropriate time. AFI (American Film Institute) Top 100 films are in blue (green if they were on the original 1998 list but were removed for the 10th anniversary list). Guidelines: 1. The majority of filmmakers will be represented by a single film (or two), often their first or first significant one. This does not mean that they made no other worthy films; rather the films listed tend to be monumental films that helped define a genre or period. For example, Arthur Penn made numerous notable films, but his 1967 Bonnie and Clyde ushered in the New Hollywood and changed filmmaking for the next two decades (or more). 2. Some filmmakers do have multiple films listed, but this tends to be reserved for filmmakers who are truly masters of the craft (e.g. Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick) or filmmakers whose careers have had a long span (e.g. Luis Buñuel, 1928-1977). A few filmmakers who re-invented themselves later in their careers (e.g. David Cronenberg–his early body horror and later psychological dramas) will have multiple films listed, representing each period of their careers.

1 “Call for help”: Analysis of Agent Cooper’s Wounded Masculinity in Twin Peaks 2.6.2021 Dale Cooper Twin Peaks crime fiction detective fiction masculinity trauma Karla Lončar karla.loncar[a]lzmk.hr Ph.D. candidate Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography This essay explores the shifts in representation of the masculinity of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, one of the leading characters of the Twin Peaks fictional universe, created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The research covers three chapters. The first chapter serves as an analysis of Cooper’s character from the original television series (1990–91) and Lynch’s film prequel Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), in which he is interpreted as an intuitive detective (Angela Hague), who departs from the conventional depiction of detective characters. The second one investigates Cooper’s “returns” in the third season/Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) and their significance for his character development through the lens of psychoanalytic interpretations of the detective/crime genre and its connections to past trauma (Sally Rowe Munt). The third chapter further explores the struggles of Cooper’s three major self-images in The Return: the Good Dale/DougieCooper, Mr. C and Richard, all of which suggest certain issues in perception of his masculinity, by referring to several psychoanalytic, feminist and masculinity scholars (Isaac D. Balbus, Jack Halberstam, Lee Stepien), official Twin Peaks novels The Autobiography of F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes (Scott Frost, 1991) and Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier (Mark Frost, 2017) as well as the Ancient myth of Orpheus and Alfred Hitchcock’s film Vertigo (1958).
