1 “Call for help”: Analysis of Agent Cooper’s Wounded Masculinity in Twin Peaks 2.6.2021 Dale Cooper Twin Peaks crime fiction detective fiction masculinity trauma Karla Lončar karla.loncar[a]lzmk.hr Ph.D. candidate Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography This essay explores the shifts in representation of the masculinity of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, one of the leading characters of the Twin Peaks fictional universe, created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The research covers three chapters. The first chapter serves as an analysis of Cooper’s character from the original television series (1990–91) and Lynch’s film prequel Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), in which he is interpreted as an intuitive detective (Angela Hague), who departs from the conventional depiction of detective characters. The second one investigates Cooper’s “returns” in the third season/Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) and their significance for his character development through the lens of psychoanalytic interpretations of the detective/crime genre and its connections to past trauma (Sally Rowe Munt). The third chapter further explores the struggles of Cooper’s three major self-images in The Return: the Good Dale/DougieCooper, Mr. C and Richard, all of which suggest certain issues in perception of his masculinity, by referring to several psychoanalytic, feminist and masculinity scholars (Isaac D. Balbus, Jack Halberstam, Lee Stepien), official Twin Peaks novels The Autobiography of F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes (Scott Frost, 1991) and Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier (Mark Frost, 2017) as well as the Ancient myth of Orpheus and Alfred Hitchcock’s film Vertigo (1958).

Outside of my parents and my partner, I have never experienced such a resolute belief in my potential. I feel great sorrow that I cannot share the final product of this work with him, but his commitment to black history as a political praxis speak though this dissertation and continue to impact my thinking and doing every day. • S/Z/COOPER/COOPER: Barthes with Twin Peaks: the Return
S/Z/COOPER/COOPER: Barthes with Twin Peaks: The Return Robin Sims n Honoré de Balzac’s 1830 novella Sarrasine, the eponymous I protagonist falls in love with a castrato disguised as a woman, La Zambinella, whom he conceives as an icon of perfect femininity. Roland Barthes’ brilliant extended analysis of this tale, published 140 years later, is titled S/Z; the two letters connote Sarrasine and La Zambinella, as well as the sexual difference evoked by Sarrasine’s name, which ‘will be obvious to any French-speaking person, since that language automatically takes the final “e” as a specifically feminine linguistic property, particularly in the case of a proper name whose masculine form (Sarrazin) exists in French onomastics’.1 Sarrasine desires La Zambinella; he also doubles her / him in that both characters effect a mingling of gendered attributes. Sarrasine’s name renders him partially feminine; S/Z thus conveys a difference within as well as between. Such deconstructive logic is also registered visually: Barthes’ title presents the ‘S’ and the ‘Z’ divided by a slash, in such a way that they appear as imperfect reflections of each other, similar but different, almost but not quite symmetrical.2 This mirroring and doubling, within and without, places Sarrasine in the wider domain of those ‘[d]ualistic fictions’, as Karl Miller has described them, characterised by ‘generic idiosyncrasy’, which ‘impart experiences of duplication, division, dispersal, abeyance’.3 One such fiction – whose generic idiosyncrasy is surely beyond question – is Twin Peaks, the American television series created by Mark Frost and David Lynch, whose original run extended to two seasons (1990-91) and a cinematic prequel, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992).4 The closing image of the second season may, indeed, evoke the visual semi-mirroring of Barthes’ title.

  • The Non-Existence of the External Gaze in David Lynch's Films
IAFOR Journal of Media, Communication & Film Volume 5 – Issue 1 – Summer 2018 Whose Story is This? The Non-existence of the External Gaze in David Lynch’s Films Asli Favaro Ege University, Turkey Abstract The tendency to eschew a coherent narrative has been very common especially since the 1990s and a certain approach to narration has become observable within postmodern cinema: the viewer is denied access to the truth and realities concerning dramatic structure and characters, either during part of the narrative, or throughout the entire movie. For instance, Stuart Mitchell (1999) points out that in David Lynch’s Lost Highway, as Lynch himself points out, the dream/dreaminess is neither a fantasy nor a delusion but something intrinsic to the character, thus what we watch is essentially the story of the main character and it is realistic according to his logic. Analysing the David Lynch’s Lost Highway (1997), Mulholland Drive (2001) and Twin Peaks: The Return (2017), this article will discuss how any attempt by the viewer to achieve the truth and to distinguish reality from fantasy may be fruitless and how the filmic or fictional reality may result undistinguishably from so-called material reality. I argue that the viewer moves and stumbles with the gaze of the camera which reveals that the reality is something constructed, and that the objective reality of an external gaze doesn’t exist. Keywords: external gaze, David Lynch, reality, fantasy, reconstructed reality, dream 43 IAFOR Journal of Media, Communication & Film Volume 5 – Issue 1 – Summer 2018 Introduction The tendency to reject a coherent narrative has been very common especially since the 1990s within postmodern cinema, in which the director’s cat-and-mouse game constitutes the core of a film.
