The Doctrinal inconsistencies in Dasam Granth : In relation to Avtarhood(Part I) Prof.Gurnam Kaur* (A) Introduction:- This paper is concerned with the authenticity of the compositions included in the Dasam Granth or we can say with the doctrinal inconsistencies in the Dasam Granth in relation to the idea of avtarhood,i.e. incarnation of God in different forms human or any, devi pooja (worship of goddess) shastar as Pir i.e. to worship weapons as the highest spiritual person, bias against unshorn hair, supporting the use of intoxicants and bias against woman. To judge all these things we have to take the help of Sikh tenants and adopt some basic criterion or methodology because these days animated discussions are going on about the Dasam Granth. The text has already been analyzed by known scholars from the historical, religious and theological points of view. Being the student of Sikh philosophy, with due regards to the analysis already done, I will try to analyze the text in the light of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Sri Guru Granth Sahib is the basic and primary scripture of Sikh religion. No other scripture can be considered equal to it. This is the only Scripture in the history of the world religions which was compiled by its founder Gurus themselves. The fifth Guru Arjan Dev compiled the first recension and installed it at Harmander Sahib on Bhadon sudi. I, 1604 A.D. Bhai Gurdas was the first scribe and Baba Budha Ji was made the first Granthi. Guru Gobind Singh, the Tenth and last physical Guru, added the bani composed by Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Nanak Joti and bestowed 1 Guruship on the Granth before his final departure in samat 1765 from this mundane world. -

Malhotra: Sikh Rites and Rituals Contemporary Evidence on Sikh Rites and Rituals in the Eighteenth Century Karamjit K Malhotra Panjab University, Chandigarh ________________________________________________________________ This paper on Sikh rites and rituals analyses the whole range of contemporary evidence on the eighteenth century in three phases for observing continuity and change in the rites of initiation, birth, marriage and death. The Sikh sources are relevant for all the three phases, the Persian sources associated with the Mughal empire are relevant for the first, and the European accounts for the third. Two major findings emerge from this study: the continuity of normative statements on Sikh rites and rituals in which the Brahman priest and Brahmanical scriptures had no role, and there was a large degree of correspondence between the normative statements and empirical evidence on Sikh rites and rituals. _______________________________________________________________ Introduction No historian of the Sikhs has brought rites and rituals of the Sikhs during the eighteenth century directly into focus. Harjot Oberoi, for example, looks upon rituals as ‘a key element in the construction of religious identity’, and underlines the importance of the ‘rites of passage’ for Sikh identity. He maintains that prior to the Khalsa transformation, the Sikhs possessed only a fluid identity, and did not think of ‘a distinct set of life-cycle rituals’. The Khalsa introduced new rites related to birth, initiation and death which ‘endowed an individual with a new and bounded identity’ to demarcate the Khalsa from the rest of the ‘civil society’. Oberoi presents these rituals in a few paragraphs on the Chaupa Singh Rahitnama which he places between 1750 and 1765. -

The Sikh Foundations of Ayurveda
Asian Medicine 4 (2008) 263–279 brill.nl/asme The Sikh Foundations of Ayurveda Neil Krishan Aggarwal Abstract This paper explores how Sikh scriptures establish a unique claim to Ayurvedic knowledge. After considering Ayurvedic creation myths in the classical Sanskrit canon, passages from Sikh liturgi- cal texts are presented to show how Ayurveda is refashioned to meet the exigencies of Sikh theol- ogy. The Sikh texts are then analysed through their relationship with general Puranic literatures and the historical context of Hindu-Sikh relations. Finally, the Indian government’s current propagation of Ayurveda is scrutinised to demonstrate its affiliation with one particular religion to the possible exclusion of others. The Sikh example provides a glimpse into local cultures of Ayurveda before the professionalisation and standardisation of Ayurvedic practice in India’s post-independence period and may serve as a model for understanding other traditions. Keywords Ayurveda, Hindu and Sikh identity, Sanskritisation, Dasam Granth, Udasis, Sikhism Scholars of South Asia who study Ayurveda have overwhelmingly concen- trated on the classical Sanskrit canon of Suśruta, Caraka, and Vāgbhata.̣ This paper departs from that line of inquiry by examining the sources for a Sikh Ayurveda. Sikh religious texts such as the Guru Granth Sahib and the Dasam Granth contest the very underpinnings of Ayurveda found in Sanskrit texts. Historical research suggests that the Udāsī Sikh sect incorporated these two scriptures within their religious curriculum and also spread Ayurveda throughout north India before the post-independence period. The rise of a government-regulated form of Ayurveda has led to the proliferation of pro- fessional degree colleges, but the fact that Udāsī monasteries still exist raises the possibility of a continuous medical heritage with its own set of divergent practices. -

DASAM GRANTH – It’s History - Daljeet Singh INTRODUCTION Since the time of the writings or pothis, to be later compiled and called the Granth of the Tenth Master, were originally found, there has been a controversy about their authorship, authenticity and historicity. Very few persons have made a serious study about their genuineness. The issue is important, and writers like O'Connell and others have often made accusations like: "A conspicuous deficiency already mentioned is the general reluctance to grapple effectively with the Dasam Granth. The period whence it comes is absolutely crucial, and until it is adequately treated, we shall continue to grope in our efforts to trace the course of Sikh history or development of Sikh tradition." It is, therefore, necessary to assess the veracity of facts, and to indicate the probabilities of the issue, so that it is understood in its right academic perspective. HISTORY - 18TH CENTURY CHHIBBER'S STORY Most of the evidence about the present work called 'Dasam Granth' is negative. The earliest reference about some writings by the Tenth Master is by Chhibber in his Bansavalinama . Contemporary historians of the period of Guru Gobind Singh like Sainapat, Bhai Nand Lal, Chaupa Singh, Sewadas, Koer Singh or Bhai Mani Singh, make no mention of the Dasam Granth or any such writing of that period. This negative evidence is quite significant and strong. For example, had there been any compilation like the Dasam Granth, these contemporary chroniclers could never have failed to mention it. The first reference to some writings by the Tenth Guru is in Chhibber's Bansavalinama written 71 years after the Guru's demise. -

Abstract This qualitative case study considers the formation of a vision for learning by members of a Sikh education trust called GNNET, established in the Midlands, UK, in 2001. Four participant interviews are analysed to build a picture of the meanings, values and life experiences which underpin their endeavours to articulate an ethos. These bring together a range of understandings, personal stances and communicative repertoires, generating common themes as well as highlighting distinct approaches and orientations. Sikh identity pertains to a shared religion, ethnicity and culture, originating five centuries ago in the Punjab region of northern India. This tends to be researched as a subject of study rather than a basis for exploring approaches to learning itself. Associated with the Punjabi words sikhna (‘to learn’) and sikhya (‘learning’), the tradition is rich in educational concepts, arising from its sacred text and resulting discourses and practices passed down through oral tradition.
