The present study Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D insufficiency has been observed worldwide at all stages of life. It is a major public health problem, throws light on the causal association of Vitamin B12 to cardiovascular disorders. Several evidences suggested that vitamin D has an effect in cardiovascular diseases thereby reducing the risk. It may happen in case of gene regulation and gene expression the vitamin D receptors in various cells helps in regulation of blood pressure (through renin-angiotensin system), and henceforth modulating the cell growth and proliferation which includes vascular smooth muscle cells and cardiomyocytes functioning. The present review article is based on identifying correct mechanisms and relationships between Vitamin D and such diseases that could be important in future understanding in patient and healthcare policies. There is some reported literature about the causative association between disease (CAD). Numerous retrospective and prospective studies have revealed a consistent, independent relationship of mild hyper- Vitamin B12 deficiency and homocysteinemia, or its role in the development of atherosclerosis and other groups of Coronary artery homocysteinemia with cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. -
Guidelines on Food Fortification with Micronutrients
GUIDELINES ON FOOD FORTIFICATION FORTIFICATION FOOD ON GUIDELINES Interest in micronutrient malnutrition has increased greatly over the last few MICRONUTRIENTS WITH years. One of the main reasons is the realization that micronutrient malnutrition contributes substantially to the global burden of disease. Furthermore, although micronutrient malnutrition is more frequent and severe in the developing world and among disadvantaged populations, it also represents a public health problem in some industrialized countries. Measures to correct micronutrient deficiencies aim at ensuring consumption of a balanced diet that is adequate in every nutrient. Unfortunately, this is far from being achieved everywhere since it requires universal access to adequate food and appropriate dietary habits. Food fortification has the dual advantage of being able to deliver nutrients to large segments of the population without requiring radical changes in food consumption patterns. Drawing on several recent high quality publications and programme experience on the subject, information on food fortification has been critically analysed and then translated into scientifically sound guidelines for application in the field. The main purpose of these guidelines is to assist countries in the design and implementation of appropriate food fortification programmes. They are intended to be a resource for governments and agencies that are currently implementing or considering food fortification, and a source of information for scientists, technologists and the food industry. The guidelines are written from a nutrition and public health perspective, to provide practical guidance on how food fortification should be implemented, monitored and evaluated. They are primarily intended for nutrition-related public health programme managers, but should also be useful to all those working to control micronutrient malnutrition, including the food industry. -
Effects of Vitamin D Deficiency on the Improvement of Metabolic Disorders

Its efects include weight loss, improved insulin resistance, and the improvement of hepatic steatosis. Epidemiologic studies demonstrated that vitamin D defciency (VDD) is associated with many diseases, including obesity. To explore the role of vitamin D in metabolic disorders for patients with obesity after VSG. We established a murine model of diet- induced obesity + VDD, and we performed VSGs to investigate VDD’s efects on the improvement of metabolic disorders present in post-VSG obese mice. We observed that in HFD mice, the concentration of VitD3 is four fold of HFD + VDD one. In the post-VSG obese mice, VDD attenuated the improvements of hepatic steatosis, insulin resistance, intestinal infammation and permeability, the maintenance of weight loss, the reduction of fat loss, and the restoration of intestinal fora that were weakened. Our results suggest that in post-VSG obese mice, maintaining a normal level of vitamin D plays an important role in maintaining the improvement of metabolic disorders. Obesity and its related comorbidities afect 2.1 billion people worldwide1. In last decade, bariatric surgery has emerged as an efective treatment for obese individuals because of its sustained ability to reduce body weight 2–4. -

If these constituents are removed or deficient such foods are unable to support nutrition and symptoms of deficiency or actual disease develop. Although vitamins are unconnected with energy and protein supplies, yet they are necessary for complete normal metabolism. They are, however, not invariably present in the diet under all circumstances. Childhood and periods of growth, heavy work, childbirth, and lactation all demand the supply of more vitamins, and under these conditions signs of deficiency may be present, although the average intake is not altered. The criteria for the fairly accurate diagnosis of vitamin deficiencies are evidence of deficiency, presence of signs and symptoms, and improvement on supplying the deficient vitamin. It is easy to discover signs and symptoms of vitamin deficiencies, but it is not easy to tell that this or that vitamin is actually deficient in the diet of a certain individual, unless one is able to assess the exact daily intake of food, a process which is neither simple nor practical. Another way of approach is the assessment of the vitamin content in the blood or the measurement of the course of dark adaptation which demon- strates a real deficiency of vitamin A (Adler, 1953). Both tests entail more or less tedious laboratory work which is not easy in a provincial hospital. -

It is a fat-soluble vitamin present in many foods. It can be endogenously produced by ultraviolet rays from sunlight when the skin is exposed to initiate vitamin D synthesis. However, since vitamin D is biologically inert when obtained from sun exposure or diet, it must first be activated in human beings before functioning. The kidney and the liver play here a crucial role by hydroxylation of vitamin D to 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the liver and to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D in the kidney. In the past decades, it has been proven that vitamin D deficiency is involved in many diseases. Due to vitamin D’s central role in the musculoskeletal system and consequently the strong negative impact on bone health in cases of vitamin D deficiency, our aim was to underline its importance in bone physiology by summarizing recent findings on the correlation of vitamin D status and rickets, osteomalacia, osteopenia, primary and secondary osteoporosis as well as sarcopenia and musculoskeletal pain. -

Berteanu3 _________________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: Fragility fractures (i.e. fractures occuring in abnormal bones, caused by minimal or no trauma) during childhood are infrequent and secondary to rare metabolic or bone diseases. The presence of multiple fractures should also raise the suspicion of inflicted injury (abuse), which is much more frequent, thus it is extremely important to distinguish between genuine fragility fractures and traumatic fractures. We report the case of a 20 years old male with a history of multiple unexplained fractures of the long bones during the entire childhood and adolescence. In this patient a diagnosis of both osteogenesis imperfecta and severe vitamin D deficiency was made on the basis of the clinical picture, biological data and radiographic findings. We provide a brief overview of the most important elements to be sought for in the differential diagnosis between fractures caused by induced trauma and fragility fractures secondary to either osteogenesis imperfecta or defective bone mineralisation due to vitamin D deficiency. A conservative approach carries high mortality and surgical intervention is not without serious risks. Reduction of subluxation and posterior fusion is widely practised but may require prolonged bed rest and continuous skull traction, sometimes for many weeks. When anterior decompression has been attempted prolonged immobilisation and external fixation have created problems. In this series 23 rheumatoid patients with cervical myelopathy were investigated over a four-year period. This is a reminder of the complete dependence of an infant on maternal nutrition; the bones that fracture in early infancy are formed during gestation. This review covers previous reports of congenital rickets including the difficulties in diagnosis, not least because there may be none of the usual radiological hallmarks of rickets. It also outlines ways of making a retrospective diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency after the infant’s biochemical findings have become normal. It is likely that similar considerations apply to vitamin C deficiency. Although overt scurvy is uncommon it is clear that vitamin C subnutrition is widespread even in Western countries. Vitamin C has many roles but among them is its requirement in the formation of collagen. Thus it is not surprising that fractures and intracranial bleeding are well-recognised features of vitamin C deficiency. Maternal subnutrition of vitamin D and vitamin C are important conditions in the wide differential diagnosis of unexplained fractures and fracture-like lesions in infancy.
