This wingless fly infests sheep, rabbits, and red foxes, and causes inflammation, wool loss and skin damage. Furthermore, this parasite has been shown to transmit diseases, and plays a role as a vector. Herein, we investigated the presence of various Rickettsia species in M. ovinus. Methods: In this study, a total of 95 sheep keds were collected in Kuqa County and Alaer City southern region of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwestern China. First, collected sheep keds were identified on the species level using morphological keys and molecular methods based on a fragment of the 18S ribosomal DNA gene (18S rDNA). Thereafter, to assess the presence of rickettsial DNA in sheep keds, the DNA of individual samples was screened by PCR based on six Rickettsia-specific gene fragments originating from six genes: the 17-kilodalton antigen gene (17-kDa), 16S rRNA gene (rrs),surfacecellantigen4gene(sca4),citratesynthasegene(gltA), and outer membrane protein A and B genes (ompA and ompB). The amplified products were confirmed by sequencing and BLAST analysis (https://blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Blast.cgi?PROGRAM=blastn&PAGE_TYPE=BlastSearch&LINK_ LOC=blasthome). Results: According to its morphology and results of molecular analysis, the species was identified as Melophagus ovinus,with100%identitytoM. -

Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2016) 12:47 DOI 10.1186/s13002-016-0118-7 RESEARCH Open Access Folk knowledge of invertebrates in Central Europe - folk taxonomy, nomenclature, medicinal and other uses, folklore, and nature conservation Viktor Ulicsni1* , Ingvar Svanberg2 and Zsolt Molnár3 Abstract Background: There is scarce information about European folk knowledge of wild invertebrate fauna. We have documented such folk knowledge in three regions, in Romania, Slovakia and Croatia. We provide a list of folk taxa, and discuss folk biological classification and nomenclature, salient features, uses, related proverbs and sayings, and conservation. Methods: We collected data among Hungarian-speaking people practising small-scale, traditional agriculture. We studied “all” invertebrate species (species groups) potentially occurring in the vicinity of the settlements. We used photos, held semi-structured interviews, and conducted picture sorting. Results: We documented 208 invertebrate folk taxa. Many species were known which have, to our knowledge, no economic significance. 36 % of the species were known to at least half of the informants. Knowledge reliability was high, although informants were sometimes prone to exaggeration. 93 % of folk taxa had their own individual names, and 90 % of the taxa were embedded in the folk taxonomy. Twenty four species were of direct use to humans (4 medicinal, 5 consumed, 11 as bait, 2 as playthings). Completely new was the discovery that the honey stomachs of black-coloured carpenter bees (Xylocopa violacea, X. valga)were consumed. 30 taxa were associated with a proverb or used for weather forecasting, or predicting harvests. Conscious ideas about conserving invertebrates only occurred with a few taxa, but informants would generally refrain from harming firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus), field crickets (Gryllus campestris) and most butterflies. -

Ratzlaff Spencer Entomological Collection, Beaty Biodiversity Museum, UBC, Vancouver, BC November 2017 The dipteran superfamily Hippoboscoidea is composed of three specialized ectoparasitic families, all of which are found in British Columbia. The Hippoboscidae, known as louse flies, are parasites on birds (subfamily Ornithomyinae) and mammals (subfamily Lipopteninae). The Nycteribiidae and Streblidae, known as bat flies, are parasites exclusively on bats. All are obligate parasites and feed on the blood of their hosts. This checklist of species and their associated hosts is compiled from Maa (1969a, 1969b) and Graciolli et al (2007) with additional records from specimens in the Spencer Entomological Collection at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Specific hosts mentioned are limited to species found in British Columbia and are primarily from specimen collection records. Ten species of Hippoboscidae, two species of Nycteribiidae, and one species of Streblidae have been found in British Columbia. McCORKLE Department of Rural Sociology University of Missouri-Columbia Columbia, MO 65211 ABSTRACT.-One of the newest directions in ethnobiology, ethnoveterinary research and development (ERD) is no more than a decade old. As this label suggests, ERO constitutes the systematic investigation and application of folk veterinary knowledge, theory, and practice. Common topics in the field include: veterinary ethnosemantics and ethnotaxonomy, ethnoveterinary pharmacology, manipulative techniques, and magico religious operations; appropriate methods of veterinary extension; and folk management of animal health in the context of the livestock production system as a whole, and its relation to larger ecological, socio-organizational, economic, ideological, and political structures. As "veterinary anthropology," this latter approach characterizes the core of both present and future ERD. Largely stimulated by intemationallivestock development concerns, anthropologists and veterinarians have joined forces to tackle the real-world complexities of ethnoveterinary systems from a holistic but comparative and production systems-specfic perspective which gives equal attention to emic and etic analyses of animal health-care problems and their solutions. With the integrated knowledge this inter disciplinary endeavor yeilds, developers can more readily design and implement socioculturally acceptable and ecologically and economically sound interventions to improve animal health and productivity-and with it, the well-being of human groups whose livelihood depends in whole or in part upon animal husbandry. INTRODUCTION Ethnoveterinary research and development (hereinafter ERD)constitutes such a "new direction" in ethnobiology that as yet there is not even consensus on a label for the field. A Synopsis of Diptera Pupipara of Japan
Pacific Insects 9 (4): 727-760 20 November 1967 A SYNOPSIS OF DIPTERA PUPIPARA OF JAPAN By T. C. Maa2 Abstract. Diptera Pupipara previously recorded from Japan are briefly reviewed. Ap parently 7 or 8 of them have been wrongly or doubtfully included in the list for that country. Insofar as this group of flies is concerned, the Japanese fauna is about as rich as and bears strong similarity to that of entire Europe. Nycteribia oitaensis Miyake 1919 is here reduced to synonym of Penicillidia jenynsii Wwd. 1834, whereas Ornithomya aobatonis Matsum., degraded as a subspecies of O. avicularia Linn. New forms described are O. chloropus extensa, O. candida, Nycteribia allotopa mikado and Brachytarsina kanoi. Illustrated keys and a host-parasite index are provided. Records of a few species from Korea and Ryukyu Is. are incorporated. Thirteen nominal species of Diptera Pupipara have been described as new from Japan and her former territories by Matsumura (1905), Miyake (1919) and Kishida (1932). Their types have never been critically re-examined by any recent workers, their published de scriptions are brief and inadequate and these flies are rare in most Japanese collections. The interpretation of such species is therefore extremely difficult. The following notes are presented with the hope of raising the interests of local collectors and they serve as a continuation of my earlier papers (1962, 1963) to straighten out the synonymy. They are partly based upon available material and partly a guesswork of published descriptions. The entire list contains 34 species (Hippoboscidae, 21; Nycteribiidae, 10; Streblidae, 3). Eight of them (each prefixed by an asterisk in keys and list) are considered to have re sulted from either incorrect or doubtful records. -

Severe outbreaks are in progress over a significant part of their distribution area and resource managers demand improved methods to monitor, analyse and possibly forecast the spread and effects of scabies at the population level. An amplified capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed to detect antibodies to Sarcoptes scabiei in chamois (Rupicapra spp.) serum. The method used the biotin-avidin amplification system and was validated on a panel of 144 serum samples, of which 40 were obtained from scabietic and 104 from healthy unexposed individuals originating from a scabies-free area. The antigen, a whole body extract of the various developmental stages of S. scabiei, was prepared from mites actively leaving the skin lesions of naturally infested red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). The resulting LAB-ELISA was characterised by 93% sensitivity, 97% specificity and a high degree of repeatibility. A single seroreactor was found amongst 32 chamois affected with skin pathologies other than scabies, including infestations by other Acarina (Trombicula spp. and Ixodid ticks). -
