Press Release Ministry of Education, Office of Spokesperson ☏ 044-203-6588 ☎ 02-3668-1594 International Education Cooperation Director Eung-seok Oh, Deputy Director Yunchul Nam Asia Pacific Ministerial Forum on ICT in Education 2017 (AMFIE 2017) “Shaping Up ICT-supported Lifelong Learning for All” □ The Ministry of Education (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Joonsik LEE), together with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS), host the “2017 Asia Pacific Ministerial Forum on ICT in Education (AMFIE 2017)” at Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul on 11-12 May 2017. ◦ The 2017 UNESCO Asia Pacific ICT Education Ministerial Forum is a forum that brings together Ministers of Education from 46 Member States across the Asia-Pacific Region to discuss about policies on use of ICT in education. This Forum, which takes place in Seoul, Republic of Korea this year, was last held four years ago - previously, it was held in Thailand in 2010, Philippines in 2011, Thailand in 2012, and China in 2013. 1 ◦ This year’s Forum is themed “Shaping Up ICT-supported Lifelong Learning for All,” which aims to endorse the “Asia Pacific Regional Strategy on Using ICT to Facilitate the Achievement of Education 2030” (“Regional Strategy” from hereinafter) and to achieve United Nation's (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4)* through using ICT in education innovations across Asia-Pacific countries. * Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), education goal is Goal 4 (SDG 4): Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning. ◦ In total, AMFIE 2017 brings together about 120 participants, including 15 Ministers and Vice Ministers of Education, chief delegates, and ICT education experts* from 29 Member States. Indeed, there is a great interest among the Member States about the Forum held in Korea, as demonstrated by the highest number of Ministers and Vice Ministers participating in the event. *UN's International Telecommunication Union (ITU), UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (IITE) □ On Day 1 of the Forum, May 11 (Thu), there will be a Keynote Presentation, Plenary Session, Ministerial Dialogue, and endorsement of the Regional Strategy. On Day 2, May 12 (Fri), a school visit to the Seoul Changdeok Girls' Middle School and sessions for experts will be arranged. ◦ More specifically, in the morning of May 11 (Thu), Dr. Paul Kim, chief technology officer and assistant dean of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University, will deliver a Keynote Presentation on “How to Leverage ICT to Achieve a Lifelong Learning Society.” 2 -For the Plenary Session, Director Gwang-Jo Kim from UNESCO Bangkok will present “UN's Education Goals for Sustainable Development and AMFIE.*” Then, Dr. David Hung, professor at the National Institute of Education in Singapore will present “Evidence-based Policy and Practice in ICT-transformative Education” *AMFIE: Asia Pacific Ministerial Forum on ICT in Education -After the Plenary Session, Brajesh Panth, technical advisor for the Sector Advisory and Service Cluster at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will give a lecture on “Smart Partnerships” to leverage on bilateral and multilateral cooperation in alleviating the digital divides within the region and within each country. - In the afternoon, the Ministerial Dialogue will engage participants in discussing about diverse issues on the direction of education across the Asia-Pacific region, such as fostering access to ICT-supported education and quality learning, and building smart partnerships to alleviate the digital divides. -Then, the “Regional Strategy,” which will reflect deliberations and discussions to achieving UN's SDGs through ICT will be endorsed. ◦ In the morning of May 12 (Fri), participants will visit the Seoul Changdeok Girls' Middle School* and observe actual class sessions and ICT-supported learning. The afternoon will be concurrent sessions for experts, organized in two tracks. 3 *Designated as a Seoul Future School, it has employed digital learning resources and competency-based curriculum to cultivate students’ digital literacy and competencies. -Session Track I : “Using OER (Open Education Resources) to Achieve SDG 4” and “Education Innovation for the Fourth Industrial Revolution” -Session Track II : “Minimizing Risks Without Restricting Opportunity: How Policy Can Support Digital Citizenship Education and Cyberwellness” □ In the opening remark, Joonsik Lee, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, addressed that, “I hope that ICT contributes to the promotion of lifelong learning and brings together the experience and wisdom of countries in the Asia-Pacific region to achieve the UN's SDG by 2030.
