RYAN FLAHERTY Issues Editor For a school with such a high level of voter apathy, this year’s NAIT Students’ Association election campaign is pro- viding plenty of fodder for conversation. Much of the dis- cussion is due to a grievance lodged by Mark Gibbons, one of the candidates for Vice President External. In the written complaint, filed Monday with the election’s chief returning officer, Gibbons alleged that Timothy Jobs and Govind Pillai, running for President and VP External respectively, had vio- lated a number of NAITSA election bylaws. ‘Pre-campaigned’ “They have pre-campaigned in contrary to our NAITSA bylaws,” wrote Gibbons in the complaint. “In addition there is no mention in NAITSA bylaws indicating that any indi- vidual candidate is allowed to campaign alongside another individual candidate on a slate.” Gibbons also raised con- cerns regarding the allocation of campaign resources. “The section in the bylaws about handling posters clearly states one “owner” of a poster (no mention of partnership) and “the maximum number of posters is thirty (30) per candi- date for Executive Council elections” with no mention of allowance for any more than one individual candidate,” he wrote. By Katharine Hay Extending the LRT to NAIT is becom- ing a key part of Edmonton’s Transit Master Plan [TMP]. The NAIT LRT line, tentatively scheduled to open in 2014, will run from Churchill Station north- bound under the new EPCOR Tower, passing by Grant MacEwan campus and the Royal Alexandra Hospital, ending at a temporary station near the soon-to- close City Centre airport. The 2014 open- ing date is tentative as it depends on pro- vincial and federal funding. In addition to the funding issue, there remains the issue of appropriation of residential houses along the potential NAIT line. Stephanie McCabe, a member of the TMP group, says the NAIT LRT line plan- ning committee spoke about how the NAIT LRT line fits in withThe Way We Move, the city’s 30-year master development plan. “One of the cornerstones of our future city is that we have a comprehensive tran- sit system,” emphasized McCabe, add- ing that the NAIT line is essential to this plan, linking a major place of employ- ment and learning to the rest of the city. It’s always a delight to come across exceptional talent in a regular, every day stu- dent at NAIT. Justin Elmer, currently enrolled in the college prep for the Waste Water Management program, is a passionate musician when he is not studying. At the age of 26, he’s already released multiple electronic and established himself extensively on well-known websites. “I’ve worked with a lot of producers on my last called Produced By. They’re from all different places like the U.K., Romania, Ontario, Edmonton and New York,” says Elmer. In addition, his works have been played on radio stations and featured in mov- ies like Emerald’s Dream 2 and the upcoming documentary Blow 2. Elmer describes music as “being an extension of me.” Music has been a huge part of his life since middle school and he attributes his musical inspiration to his late friend, Luke, lightly adding, “If Luke was still alive today he would be a huge success and I’d probably be trying to ride his coattails.” With a positive response from friends, fans and local industry people encouraging him to pursue his music as a profession, it’s hard to believe that Elmer refuses to try his work in Hollywood. Humble as pie, he explains, “I make music for myself. I like it too much and I don’t want it to feel like work. I do it when I want and I like it best when I don’t have to answer to anybody.” Photo by Kathy Le Turning away from pressing CDs, since its popularity has decreased over the NAIT student Justin Elmer does his music for the love of it. years, he generously offers his music for free to download on all of his websites. A big fan of old-school hip-hop, Elmer uses this style dominantly in his music. “I don’t listen to anything after 1997. The music today is still good, but it’s changed from the way it was before and that was the style of music I fell in love with.” Specifically, he enjoys “boom bap,” a style of rap from New York, which contains jazz and soul influ- ence. When asked about how he feels about auto-tune his reply was, “No comment.” For a musician who refuses to accept “charity” through album revenue, it can be tough to fund his pas- sion. Elmer says that the only purpose of attaining an education in his program is so he can afford the costs that come with the music industry. “This program seems like it was a good opportunity for employment. I’ll do what I hate to be able to do what I love.” Prior to returning to the education stream, he served in the army for three years where military assign- ments brought him to the City of Champions from his hometown of Aurora, Ontario.
