Gibbons filed an unsuccessful challenge to their arrangement. 2 The Nugget Thursday, February 4, 2010 NEWS&FEATURES Executive privilege? RYAN FLAHERTY Issues Editor For a school with such a high level of voter apathy, this year’s NAIT Students’ Association election campaign is pro- viding plenty of fodder for conversation. Much of the dis- cussion is due to a grievance lodged by Mark Gibbons, one of the candidates for Vice President External. In the written complaint, filed Monday with the election’s chief returning officer, Gibbons alleged that Timothy Jobs and Govind Pillai, running for President and VP External respectively, had vio- lated a number of NAITSA election bylaws. ‘Pre-campaigned’ “They have pre-campaigned in contrary to our NAITSA bylaws,” wrote Gibbons in the complaint. “In addition there is no mention in NAITSA bylaws indicating that any indi- vidual candidate is allowed to campaign alongside another individual candidate on a slate.” Gibbons also raised con- cerns regarding the allocation of campaign resources. “The section in the bylaws about handling posters clearly states one “owner” of a poster (no mention of partnership) and “the maximum number of posters is thirty (30) per candi- date for Executive Council elections” with no mention of allowance for any more than one individual candidate,” he wrote. The Working-Class Experience in Contemporary Australian Poetry A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Sarah Attfield BCA (Hons) University of Technology, Sydney August 2007 i Acknowledgements Before the conventional thanking of individuals who have assisted in the writing of this thesis, I want to acknowledge my class background. Completing a PhD is not the usual path for someone who has grown up in public housing and experienced childhood as a welfare dependent. The majority of my cohort from Chingford Hall Estate did not complete school beyond Year 10. As far as I am aware, I am the only one among my Estate peers to have a degree and definitely the only one to have attempted a PhD. Having a tertiary education has set me apart from my peers in many ways, and I no longer live on the Estate (although my mother and old neighbours are still there). But when I go back to visit, my old friends and neighbours are interested in my education and they congratulate me on my achievements. When I explain that I’m writing about people like them – about stories they can relate to, they are pleased. The fact that I can discuss my research with my family, old school friends and neighbours is really important. If they couldn’t understand my work there would be little reason for me to continue. My life has been shaped by my class. It has affected my education, my opportunities and my outlook on life. I don’t look back at the hardship with a fuzzy sense of nostalgia, and I will be forever angry at the class system that held so many of us back, but I am proud of my working-class family, friends and neighbourhood.

Echoes: Reflections of a Hometown Heritage, , Jay Musfeldt, 2006, 0977992403, 9780977992409, . A collection of 75 little stories about the life, times, and values of small town, rural America of the 1940's and 1950's. Set in rural Iowa, the detailed stories recall with warmth and humor an earlier and simpler time in American life and culture.. DOWNLOAD HERE , , , , . This book is based on the author's experiences growing up on a farm in rural Iowa in 1950's and 1960's. It is 74 vignettes about growing up in a rural/small town farming environment where life centered around hard work, family, neighbors and community schools and churches in a time and lifestyle that cannot be replicated in our modern society. Some of the episodes are humorous, some are thought provoking and some are just plain feel-good stories. They are stories of a happy childhood experienced by someone who, at the time, thought his life was just "normal". Only after being able to look at it in hindsight could he appreciate how blessed he was to have experienced the time, place and value system that would mold his attitudes and actions in such a positive way for the rest of his life. The author's stories have a combination of "Lake Wobegon" and "Huckleberry Finn" qualities to them, but they are told in such a way there will be no doubt in your mind about them being real. You don't have to be from the Mid-West, have a rural and/or small town heritage or be old enough to remember the '50's and '60's to really enjoy this book, but if you experienced any of them, even briefly, the book will provide absolute nostalgic pleasure.

AUSTRALIAN HIP HOP’S MULTI- 13/ CULTURAL LITERACIES / A SUBCULTURE EMERGES INTO THE LIGHT / TONY MITCHELL uch has been written in recent years about the relationship between hip hop Mculture, pedagogy and youth literacies in an African-American context (Ibrahim 2003; Dimitriades 2004; Ginwright 2004; Richardson 2006). However, hip hop is also being used increasingly in the broader educational contexts of language learning and popular culture studies both in the US and throughout the rest of the world. Hip Hop Studies is now a discipline taught in US universities (Forman & Neal 2004) and is gradually spreading to educational contexts in other parts of the world. In Hiphop literacies, Elaine Richardson (2006) argues for “the depth, the importance, and the immediate necessity of acknowledging one of the most contemporary, accessible, and contentious of African American literacies, Hiphop literacies” (p.xv). She sets out to locate hip hop discourses “within a trajectory of Black discourses” and to consider hip hop as an oral and semiotic form of discourse, analysing “rap music and song lyrics, electronic and digital media, including video games, music videos, telecommunication 231 SOUNDS OF THEN, SOUNDS OF NOW / POPULAR MUSIC IN AUSTRALIA devices, magazines, ‘Hip hop’ novels, oral performances, and cinema” (Richardson 2006, p.xvi). Richardson’s study is restricted by two major limitations. Apart from looking at the use of African-American language in online German hip hop sites, neither considers the indigenising global spread of hip hop beyond the boundaries of African-American vernacular cultures, nor the non-linguistic but fundamentally semiotic aspects of hip hop such as beatboxing, DJing, breakdancing and graffiti writing, which are arguably of equal importance to MCing as hip hop literacies.
