Sharlean Perez Commodore Sharlean was born and raised playing sports in the South Bay. Though she only found sailing as an adult, it has truly fed her need for competition in a fun and social way. With a lifetime of commitment to volunteerism, it is only natural that she has immersed herself in the volunteer side of things for sailing as well. Sharlean is a Staff Commo- dore of SBYRC and a member of WSA. Having passed the U.S. Sailing Club Race Officer course, she has served as PRO for many races and has served on RC with many other clubs including SCCYC, MVYC, CYC and PMYC. While actively racing in Marina del Rey PHRF races, Sharlean is also a member of the King Harbor Women’s fleet and takes particular pride in racing on all woman teams, especially at the WOW/WAH and in the Long Beach LEMWOD. Her goals for 2016 are: (1) to race more and (2) to get more people involved and volunteering within the sailing community.

Patrick Shuss Vice Comodore Patrick is an avid cruiser, sailor, diver, and fisherman. He has been on the waters of Southern California all his life. He has snorkeled or dove every cove from Santa Barbara to San Diego. He has visited the offshore islands of Catalina, San Clemente, Santa Barbara, Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Guadalupe. With extensive chartering experience he has skippered boats from the Caribbean, Pacific Northwest, and Croatia. In 2003, he purchased a sailboat and, in the interest of learning how to sail, started racing sailboats as crew. Through a succession of boats, skippers, and races, he learned to thoroughly enjoy sailing even though Mal de Mer was a constant opponent. As he gained experience, he saw the value and camaraderie of yacht club membership. He became Commodore of Redondo Beach Yacht Club in 2012 and is now a member of King Harbor Yacht Club.He currently owns a Lagoon 410 catamaran that will further his activities of cruising, racing, diving, and fishing with the added possibilities of long-range cruising.

FRED WEINHART Rear Commodore Fred has a long history of sailing since his days as Fleet Captain at the UCLA MAC in the early seventies, having learned to sail and race and teach sailing on C-15’s and Hobies while a student at UCLA and a Collegiate Member of Santa Monica Yacht Club. Rejoining SMWYC in 2008, he has moved up through the club ranks to Commodore in 2014. He has participated in his club’s race committee activities, and was a member of the U.S.C.G.A. Fred has owned several sail and power boats and has sailed his Venture 23 since 1976, visiting places by water and land, including the Sacramento river area, spots along the Mexican mainland, as well as our local islands and all the ports of call along the Southern California coast. He currently owns and cruises, but not often enough, his Laguna 30 sloop. He plans to find more time for sailing and racing in addition to contributing his efforts to both ASMBYC and SMWYC.

3 Sportsman of the Year

For “exceptional and consistent fairness, courtesy, gracefulness and/or heroism in yachting activities”. D PaVID iPER David has been involved in race management of the CYC Sunset Series (one of MdR’s most popular races) for nine years. Starting on the bow for wind readings, David was promoted to timer, and then computer finisher. Serving in these positions under a variety of PROs and race chairs enabled David to see the big picture for the series, to the point that he has been the Sunset Series Chair for four years. And, despite challenges like main channel dredging and frequent missing marks, the series has flourished under his leadership. While racing is, of course, the primary focus of Sunset Series, the after-party is a huge component and David has enlivened the post-race atmosphere with a DJ, fun trophies, and occasional giveaways/prizes. He also has been a strong supporter of junior and women’s sailing working with CYC’s Junior Director to ensure that junior sailors get rides on race boats, and working with the ASMBYC Women’s Sailing Coordinator to offer extra trophies to women skippers. Wednesday nights on the water is a huge component of summer racing in Marina del Rey, and the management of the series is nearly a full-time job. David has consistently performed this lob with grace and fairness to the benefit of the entire racing and sailing community.

Junior Sportsman of the Year

For “exceptional and consistent fairness, courtesy, gracefulness and/or heroism in yachting activities”.

Cssandraa “Cassie” Obel Every so often there comes along a junior sailor whose demeanor is that of grace and poise with an acute sense of fairness. Even in difficult circumstances and unfortu- nate outcomes, Cassie’s replies are consistently positive, avoiding the negative. After a two-day regatta with 25- to 30- knot gusts, her reply about, “How it went,” focused on what was learned and ways to improve (her team be- ing underweight was a non-issue). As a dedicated DRYC sailor, Cassie is out on the water at every opportunity. Whether practicing with her crew partner, or helping younger, less experienced 420 sailors, Cassie graciously volunteers her time and experience freely to help others get better at the sport she so dearly loves. She sails for sailing’s sake. Cassie has successfully competed on the national stage, winning 1st Place in the Chubb US Sailing National Trophy for the Bemis, and placing 3rd in the Ida Lewis Cup. Cassie graduated Marymount High School in 2015 and is now attending Stanford University.

4 Yachtsman of the Year

Presented for creative contributions and exemplary accomplishments to the sport of yachting in Santa Monica Bay.

Kellie Fennessy A long-time racer and leader in our sailing community, Kellie outdid herself organizing the US Sailing Team Sperry fundraiser held in May 2015 at California Yacht Club. The day was dedicated to exposing local juniors to world-class sailors and coaching and raising funds for our country’s top sailors as they prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games in . The day started with a sailing clinic for more than 50 junior sailors in Santa Monica Bay, instructed by current athletes on the US Sailing Team Sperry Olympic and Para-Olympic campaigns. The afternoon included a presentation for youngsters and adults by sailing legends Gary Jobson and Paul Cayard on preparing for the Games. The evening concluded with a dinner and auction which, combined with event donations, raised more than $100,000 to help our athletes bring home the gold.

Junior Yachtsman of the Year

Given to a junior under 20 who has “demonstrated superior sailing ability along with the highest standards of sportsmanship”.

ROBERTO STEVENS Roberto began sailing on the family boat, racing his first Sunset Series at age five, and was a part of the Westlake Yacht Club before joining DRYC’s Sabot Race Team at age nine. He progressed to the CFJ, competing in the Shadden Series while simultaneously attending Laser regattas. Eventually he started competing on the C420, twice qualifying for the US Youth Double Handed National Championships, where he placed third in 2014. Over the past three years, he has also attended the US Youth Champs, the CISA Advanced Sailing Clinic, and the Orange Bowl Regatta in Florida. Though new to match racing, his team placed third at the US Match Racing National Championships this summer, which qualified them for the Governor’s Cup Regatta at Balboa Yacht Club, an international match racing event, where they placed fourth, finishing as the second team from the U. S. Roberto graduated Calabasas High School this year and is now attending Fordham University in New York.

Awarded to an outstanding racer competing in major regattas held outside of Santa Monica Bay, especially national or international competition.

C URT JOHNSON If you’ve raced in Southern California, you’ve probably raced against Curt Johnson and his J/80 Avet, and odds are (if you were in the same class), he’s beaten you. In 2015 Curt won nearly every race he entered, both in PHRF and One Design classes. Highlights in Santa Monica Bay include first in class in Cal Race Week, CYC’s Harris Regatta, SBYRC’s Champagne Series and KHYC Race week, and he just missed first place overall in the 2015 Sunset Series by fraction of a point. He won the 2015 ASMBYC Champion of Champions regatta and the Jack Weber Keg perpetual trophy. Avet has also received the ASMBYC Home Harbor award for at least the past six years (and possibly longer). He regularly travels to San Diego for both SCYA Midwinters and Yachting Cup; and to Long Beach Race Week, winning first in all three events in 2015. In fact, he’s won first at both Yachting Cup and LBRW every year since 2010 and has won the J/80 West Coast Championships eight times! Beyond Southern California, most recently Curt competed in the J/80 Worlds in Annapolis, MD, in 2014. He also is active in long distance racing, racing in several Transpac regattas, including the 2015 Transpac aboard the Santa Cruz 70 Maverick.

David Poe Memorial Yachting Service Award

Presented for outstanding contributions of time and/or talent to yachting beyond the recipient’s normal obligation.

Wle il i hJORTH For more than 50 years, Willie has been a dedicated steward and cheerleader for all things Marina del Rey. She was instrumental in organizing the Holiday Boat Parade and still serves as an advisor. She played a major role in the formation of the boaters advocacy group Pioneer Skippers Association, and worked to as- sure that in the early years of the Marina, boat owners and yacht clubs had a voice in the management and development of Maria del Rey. She has been the driving force behind the Marina del Rey Historical Society, which recently published a book about the early days of the Marina. She served on the Board and as a committee chair for the Marina’s recent 50th birthday celebration. She sails the family-built catamaran “Hiolani II” whenever she can, and always makes time to help new members to the community find their way around and get involved.

28 ASMBYC HIGH POINT SERIES Many skippers from each Santa Monica Bay harbor sailed the High Point races in 2015 and the best from each harbor earned a trophy. The series rewards those skippers who sail often and 2016 promises to be even more popular. Each entry is easy, just sail in the races printed in bold face on the follow- ing pages, or designated in this calendar as a High Point Event. Six races are scheduled at each Santa Monica Bay harbor. Your best six races will be scored. Boats berthed in Santa Monica Bay will receive a 25% bonus when they sail at the “other” Santa Monica Bay harbor. Questions? For complete rules and current standings, just visit the ASMBYC website at www.asmbyc.org, or contact David Doeh, High Point Series Coordi- nator. 310-713-1393 or [email protected].
