Chair Worldcon, or TorCon 3 as we also know it, takes place in Toronto August 28th Jamie Fraser through September 1st, and is split between various locales across the downtown Vice Chair core. Thousands of people from across the globe will be attending this prestigious John Rose event, many of whom will be visiting the Merril Collection for the first time. It’s been thirty years since our last TorCon and much has changed since then. In Treasurer 1973, the Spaced Out Library was only three years old and hadn’t yet achieved its Ted Brown current status as one of the world’s best collections of speculative fiction and relat- ed non-fiction. An awful lot can happen in thirty years. Secretary Donald Simmons In 1990, The Spaced Out Library was changed to The Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy, named after Judith Merril whose dona- Manager of Special tion of her personal library formed the basis for the original collection. The Collections Collection was moved to a newly built, custom designed library building in 1995. David Kotin The Friends of The Merril Collection was formed in 1981 by members of the science fiction community in order to support the Collection, to broaden public Members at Large awareness of the Collection and it’s holdings, especially the Canadian content, Mary Armstrong and work with the Toronto Public Library Board. 1987 saw the first issue of SOL Sabrina Fried Andrew Specht Rising, the Friends’ newsletter/magazine, which has become a popular and award winning publication.     "The Love Token of a Token Immigrant": Judith Merril's Expatriate Narrative, 1968-1972 by Jolene McCann A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA April 2006 © Jolene McCann, 2006 Abstract Judith Merril was an internationally acclaimed science fiction (sf) writer and editor who expatriated from the United States to Canada in November 1968 with the core of what would become the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy in Toronto. Merril chronicled her transition from a nominal American or "token immigrant" to an authentic Canadian immigrant in personal documents and a memoir, Better to Have Loved: the Life of Judith Merril (2002). I argue that Sidonie Smith's travel writing theory, in particular, her notion of the "expatriate narrative" elucidates Merril's transition from a 'token' immigrant to a representative token of the American immigrant community residing in Toronto during the 1960s and 1970s. I further argue that Judith Merril's expatriate narrative links this personal transition to the simultaneous development of her science fiction library from its formation at Rochdale College to its donation by Merril in 1970 as a special branch of the Toronto Public Library (TPL). Works by Merril include a variety of types and modes—pieces she wrote at Morris High School in the Bronx, newsletters and fanzines she edited; sports, westerns, and detective fiction and non-fiction published in pulp magazines up to 1950; science fiction stories, novellas, and novels; book reviews; critical essays; edited anthologies; and both audio and video recordings of her fiction and non-fiction. Works about Merill cover over six decades, beginning shortly after her first science fiction story appeared (1948) and continuing after her death (1997), and in several modes— biography, news, critical commentary, tribute, visual and audio records.     Social Science Fiction from the Sixties to the Present Instructor: Joseph Shack [email protected] Office Hours: To be announced Course Description The label “social science fiction,” initially coined by Isaac Asimov in 1953 as a broad category to describe narratives focusing on the effects of novel technologies and scientific advances on society, became a pejorative leveled at a new group of authors that rose to prominence during the sixties and seventies. These writers, who became associated with “New Wave” science fiction movement, differentiated themselves from their predecessors by consciously turning their backs on the pulpy adventure stories and tales of technological optimism of their predecessors in order to produce experimental, literary fiction. Rather than concerning themselves with “hard” science, social science fiction written by authors such as Ursula K. Le Guin and Samuel Delany focused on speculative societies (whether dystopian, alien, futuristic, etc.) and their effects on individual characters. In this junior tutorial you’ll receive a crash course in the groundbreaking science fiction of the sixties and seventies (with a few brief excursions to the eighties and nineties) through various mediums, including the experimental short stories, landmark novels, and innovative films that characterize the period. Responding to the social and political upheavals they were experiencing, each of our authors leverages particular sub-genres of science fiction to provide a pointed critique of their contemporary society. During the first eight weeks of the course, as a complement to the social science fiction we’ll be reading, students will familiarize themselves with various theoretical and critical methods that approach literature as a reflection of the social institutions from which it originates, including Marxist literary critique, queer theory, feminism, critical race theory, and postmodernism.

"SF," has become the standard term used in both casual reference to the genre as well as in both popular and scholarly criticism. I use "SF" to denote the genre as a whole, but I employ "PSF," which stands for pulp-science fiction, specifically to denote that science fiction which was written in the pulp era, defined by Mike Ashley in his three volume history, The History of Science Fiction Magazines (2000), as occurring between the years 1926- 1954.

  • Discussion About Frederik Pohl
    Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Michael Page (May 2020) Michael Page is the author of a number of books which examine the history and cultural importance of science fiction. He has published analyses on the life and works of Frederik Pohl, James E. Gunn, and edited a collection of stories by Miles J. Breuer a “forgotten” science fiction writer from the Pulp Era. He is a lecturer at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and regularly teaches courses on both science fiction and nineteenth century British literature. He also acts as the faculty advisor for Laurus, UNL's undergraduate literary magazine. Blaine Savini: There is a belief that most writers approach novels from one of two directions...either they write the first sentence and find out what happens as the story is written or they know how it will end and then explain how the ending occurred. Would either of these descriptions describe Mr. Pohl's writing style...why or why not? My sense is that Pohl primarily took the latter tactic. His adage was “four pages a day,” meaning that no matter what he was doing or how he was feeling, he always carved out some time to write those four pages each day. I’ll paraphrase what he says in The Way the Future Was: sometimes the four pages come fast and I’m done in half an hour; sometimes it might take 16 hours to grind them out. This is a different kind of discipline than the discipline of planning work out well in advance. That’s not to say that Pohl didn’t plan, but I think once he got started he’d let the story and the characters go in their own direction as he got going on a project.
