She previously worked for the US-China Policy Foundation as a Program Assistant. Having received her Master's in Asian Studies from The George Washington University, Catherine's area of focus is on Chinese domestic politics and foreign affairs. Christina Lin is a Fellow at the Center for Transatlantic Relations at SAIS-Johns Hopkins University, where she specializes on China- Middle East relations. She is a former visiting fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and a 2011 National Security Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. Dr. Lin has extensive U.S. government experience working on China security issues, including policy planning at the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Council and U.S. Department of State. Peter Mattis is a Fellow at The Jamestown Foundation, where he served as editor of China Brief from 2011 to 2013. He completed his M.A. in Security Studies at Georgetown University in 2011 and is a graduate of the University of Washington. Mr. Mattis’ writing on Chinese politics, foreign policy, and security issues has appeared in The National Interest, Asia Times, the East-West Center’s Asia- Pacific Bulletin, The Diplomat, Taipei Times, Studies in Intelligence, and the International Journal of Intelligence and Counter- intelligence. Kathy Ogawa worked at the World Bank from 1980-2010. During that time, she focused on China for fourteen years, including an assignment at the World Bank’s China Country Office in Beijing (1993-1997) and as an external service assignment to the Japan International Bank for Cooperation. She also served as senior country officer for the Central Asia Country Unit, in charge of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. From 2002 to 2005, she resided in Kyiv as senior country officer in charge of the Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova country programs. Ariane Rosen is a program assistant at the U.S.-China Policy Foundation. She received her MPhil in International Relations from Cambridge University and her B.A. in International Relations, with a focus on China, and a minor in Writing from Rollins College. Dr. SHAO Yuqun is the Acting Director of Center for American Studies, Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS). She got her Ph.D on international relations from Fudan University, Shanghai. Her research focus covers China-U.S. relations, the cross-Strait relations, general U.S. foreign policy and U.S. policy towards South Asia and Central Asia. Shannon Tiezzi is a research associate at the U.S.-China Policy Foundation and the associate producer of the educational television show, China Forum. She received her M.A. in Regional Studies- East Asia from Harvard University and her B.A. in Chinese and English from The College of William and Mary. Amanda Watson graduated from Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service with a BSFS in International Politics and a Certificate in Asian Studies. She spent a semester studying Mandarin Chinese and Chinese politics at East China Normal University in Shanghai, and served as a group leader for a delegation of Chinese students from Fudan and Zhejiang Universities studying at Georgetown. She was formerly Program Assistant at the U.S.-China Policy Foundation, and is currently at the National Endowment for Democracy. She is writing this review in her personal capacity. Ali Wyne is an associate of Harvard University's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and a contributing analyst at Wikistrat. He is a coauthor of Lee Kuan Yew: The Grand Master's Insights on China, the United States, and the World (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2013). In 2012, the Diplomatic Courier and Young Professionals in Foreign Policy named him one of the 99 most influential foreign-policy professionals under 33. Constructing China and America’s New Type of Major Power Relations: Opportunities and Challenges Shao Yuqun,Ph.D.1 On June 7 and 8, 2013, President Xi Jinping and President Barack Obama held meetings at the Annenberg Estate in California. This meeting was Xi Jinping’s first visit to the U.S. since assuming the position of President; it was also Obama’s first meeting with a Chinese leader since beginning his second term. Even more importantly, the two sides altered the original schedule. The Xi-Obama meeting, originally planned to take place at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in September, was moved forward to early June. This demonstrates that both sides had a desire to meet and communicate as early as possible. During the Xi-Obama summit, the proposition to construct a “new type of major power relations” between China and the U.S. again attracted global attention. This essay attempts to sort out the origins and development of the idea of “new type of major power relations” between China and the U.S., and to use this as a foundation for analyzing the potential opportunities and challenges that confront the proposition’s success. Finally, the essay will evaluate the concept’s significance for China-U.S. relations on a policy level. I. Proposing the Concept In February 2012, then-Vice President Xi Jinping made an official visit to the U.S. During his trip, Xi said that “China and the United States have the wisdom, ability and means to maintain and develop their cooperative partnership… And by doing so, we’ll set an unprecedented and inspiring example.”2 Xi further said, “China is the world’s largest developing country, while the United States is the largest developed country. To build a new type of cooperative partnership between two countries like ours is a pioneering endeavor with great and far-reaching significance. On May 3, 2012, then-President Hu Jintao gave an opening speech titled “Advance Mutually Beneficial and Win-Win Cooperation; Develop New Type Major Power Relations” at the Fourth China-U.S.

Serie orientale ISSN 2385-3042 Vol. 51 – Giugno 2015 Qiu Xiaolong’s Death of a Red Heroine in Chinese Translation A Macro-Polysystemic Analysis Paolo Magagnin (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Italia) Abstract Despite the literature available on the linguistic specificity of the works by Chinese authors writing in languages other than their native language, the observable phenomena in the Chinese translations of such works remain generally unexplored. In fact, the analysis of such Chi- nese-language renditions reveals complex phenomena at the level of linguistic hybridity, transla- tion norms, and political and ideological interference, calling for a more in-depth description of the recontextualization undergone by the prototexts, and for a comprehensive analysis of the ‘external politics’ involved in the translation process. A brief outline of such factors, as exemplified by Hong ying zhi si (2003) – the Chinese translation of Shanghai-born writer Qiu Xiaolong’s first English- language detective novel, Death of a Red Heroine (2000) – will be herein attempted. To do so, a representative range of linguistic and extra-linguistic features observable in Hong ying zhi si will be described and the relevant translation strategies will be commented upon. Finally, by adopting a macro-polysystemic model, a preliminary attempt will be made to reconstruct the network in which the Chinese translation of Qiu’s novel is situated. Summary 1. He was accused of “damaging the business reputation” of Zoomlion, one of the country’s largest construction machinery businesses, which is partly owned by the Hunan government. After several days of quiet attempts to secure Chen’s release, New Express published a full front-page editorial with the headline “Please Release Him.” It defended Chen’s reporting, claiming that staff had reviewed his 15 articles about Zoomlion and discovered only one minor error. The editorial was a rare example of Chinese media directly appealing to the public over the unfair treatment of one of their journalists. In an outcry reminiscent of the January protest against censorship at Guangzhou’s Southern Weekly (see CMB special), New Express garnered support from prominent bloggers and business figures. The Central Propaganda Department reportedly instructed media not to cover the incident, but several commercial papers published statements of solidarity.

It focuses on the formal and thematic features of these novels through comparative analyses of the themes of commodification and crime. Part I draws on the work of Jay McInerney, Bret Easton Ellis, Candace Bushnell, Wei Hui and Wang Anyi. It examines how commodification has become not just a feature of global fiction but how writers are drawn to a narrative of excess in their representations of it. Wei Hui's "body writing" shares the same materialistic emphasis as New York "Brat Pack" writing but in their criticism of material excess, their approaches are different.
