Guide to the Flora of the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia, Working Draft of 17 March 2004 -- LILIACEAE LILIACEAE de Jussieu 1789 (Lily Family) (also see AGAVACEAE, ALLIACEAE, ALSTROEMERIACEAE, AMARYLLIDACEAE, ASPARAGACEAE, COLCHICACEAE, HEMEROCALLIDACEAE, HOSTACEAE, HYACINTHACEAE, HYPOXIDACEAE, MELANTHIACEAE, NARTHECIACEAE, RUSCACEAE, SMILACACEAE, THEMIDACEAE, TOFIELDIACEAE) As here interpreted narrowly, the Liliaceae constitutes about 11 genera and 550 species, of the Northern Hemisphere. There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses. GCH members serve as volunteers, and our profits from the Bulb Mart are given back to WELCOME the community in support of our mission. In the last fifteen years, we have given back over $3.5 million in grants to the community! The Garden Club of Houston’s first Plant Sale was held in 1942, on the steps of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, with plants dug from members’ gardens. Plants propagated from our own members’ yards will be available again this year as well as plants and bulbs sourced from near and far that are unique, interesting, and well suited for area gardens. -
Hedychium Spicatum
Hedychium spicatum Family: Zingiberaceae Local/common names: Van-Haldi, Sati, Kapoor kachri, Karchura (Sanskrit) Trade name: Kapoor kachri Profile: Hedychium spicatum belongs to the same family as ginger and turmeric and has been extensively used in traditional medicine systems for the treatment of diseases ranging from asthma to indigestion. The entire genus is native to the tropical belt in Asia and the Himalayas. Across its range (from Nepal to the Kumaon hills), Hedychium spicatum differs across its range with variations found in the colour of the flowers from white to pale yellow. Although the specie sis fairly commonly found, it is now being collected for its fragrant roots and seeds from the wild, putting pressure on the wild populations. Habitat and ecology: This plant grows in moist soil and shaded areas in mixed forests. It occurs as a perennial herb in the Himalayas at an altitude of 800-3000 m. It is found in parts of the Western Himalayas, Nepal, Kumaon, Dehradun, Tehri and Terai regions of Darjeeling and Sikkim. Morphology: Hedychium spicatum is a perennial rhizomatous herb measuring up to 1 m in height. The leaves are oblong and up to 30 cm long and 4-12 cm broad. The rhizome is quite thick, up to 7.5 cm in diameter, aromatic, knotty, spreading horizontally under the soil surface, grayish brown in colour with long, thick fibrous roots. The leaves are 30 cm or more in length while the inflorescence is spiked. The flowers are fragrant, white with an orange- red base and born in a dense terminal spike 15-25 cm on a robust leafy stem of 90-150 cm. -

These plants’ leaves contain saponin compounds which show anti-inflammatory properties in different models. The goal of this investigation was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory capacity of these plants, identify which is the most active, and isolate the active compound by a bio-directed fractionation using the ear edema induced in mice with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) technique. -

Species accounts The list of species that follows is a synthesis of all the botanical knowledge currently available on the Nyika Plateau flora. It does not claim to be the final word in taxonomic opinion for every plant group, but will provide a sound basis for future work by botanists, phytogeographers, and reserve managers. It should also serve as a comprehensive plant guide for interested visitors to the two Nyika National Parks. By far the largest body of information was obtained from the following nine publications: • Flora zambesiaca (current ed. G. Pope, 1960 to present) • Flora of Tropical East Africa (current ed. H. Beentje, 1952 to present) • Plants collected by the Vernay Nyasaland Expedition of 1946 (Brenan & collaborators 1953, 1954) • Wye College 1972 Malawi Project Final Report (Brummitt 1973) • Resource inventory and management plan for the Nyika National Park (Mill 1979) • The forest vegetation of the Nyika Plateau: ecological and phenological studies (Dowsett-Lemaire 1985) • Biosearch Nyika Expedition 1997 report (Patel 1999) • Biosearch Nyika Expedition 2001 report (Patel & Overton 2002) • Evergreen forest flora of Malawi (White, Dowsett-Lemaire & Chapman 2001) We also consulted numerous papers dealing with specific families or genera and, finally, included the collections made during the SABONET Nyika Expedition. In addition, botanists from K and PRE provided valuable input in particular plant groups. Much of the descriptive material is taken directly from one or more of the works listed above, including information regarding habitat and distribution. A single illustration accompanies each genus; two illustrations are sometimes included in large genera with a wide morphological variance (for example, Lobelia). -

The same classification systems are used to arrange the botanical collections of the Tasmanian Herbarium and by the Flora of Australia series published by the Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS). For a more up-to-date classification of the flora refer to The Flora of Tasmania Online (Duretto 2009+) which currently follows APG II (2003). This census also serves as an index to The Student’s Flora of Tasmania (Curtis 1963, 1967, 1979; Curtis & Morris 1975, 1994). Lesson 3 RECOGNISING PLANT FAMILIES AND IDENTIFYING PLANTS Aim Distinguish between different plant families and to become proficient at identifying plants. The best way to build your ability to identify plants is by working with or handling a variety of different plants on a daily basis. The first ten plant names you learn are always much more difficult than the next ninety. Similarly, the first 100 names are always much more difficult than the next 900. If you plan to be a skilled gardener, landscape designer, or horticulturist: you need to learn to identify hundreds of different plants. As you have seen earlier; there is a system in identifying plant names. BECOME FAMILIAR WITH PLANT FAMILIES If you can get to know the way the system works, and the broad categories, the whole thing starts to make a great deal more sense. Each new name you confront is able to be associated with things and remembered more easily. FOR EXAMPLE: “When I see a plant with a daisy flower, I immediately know that it is in the Asteraceae family. Even if the genus is new to me, I will be more likely to remember it because I’m not only thinking: This is the genus of this new plant , but I am also thinking: This new genus is in the Asteraceae family. In essence, my brain is registering two pieces of information instead of one and that doubles the likelihood of me remembering the plant. BECOME FAMILIAR WITH LATIN Plant naming is based on the ancient Roman language of Latin.
