E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT A new genus of schistopterine fruit-flies, Tanzanimyia, and four new species, T. flavicauda, T. reticulata, T. tanzaniaensis and T. ugandaensis (type species), are described from Equatorial Africa, based on adults. The larvae of T. ugandaensis and T. reticulata infest the flower heads of Bothriocline fusca, and those of T. reticulata also infest the flower heads of Gutenbergia cordifolia var. cordifolia (Asteraceae: Vernonieae). Illustrations of taxonomically relevant body parts of both sexes are provided, primarily for the two reared species. An identification key for the new species is compiled. INTRODUCTION The Schistopterini (Tephritidae: Tephritinae) is a moderately large tribe, containing at least 200 species, assigned to 15 genera, although about two-thirds of the species are still undescribed, and some of them belong to undescribed genera (Freidberg 2002; Zonstein & Freidberg 2006). The goal of this study is to describe Tanzanimyia, a new genus of Schistopterini, and its four new species, all from Equatorial Africa, as another step in our ongoing revision of this tribe (Freidberg 2002; Zonstein & Freidberg 2006). In Freidberg’s (2002) key to the schistopterine genera, Tanzanimyia runs to the couplets distinguishing between the Australo-Oriental-Palearctic genus Cal loptera Freidberg and the complex of five Afrotropical genera: Cordylopterix Hering, Melanopterella Freidberg, Schistotephritis Freidberg, Heringomyia Hardy and Clematochaeta Hering. -

The collection was started by Dr. L.H. Hale during 1970, and was resurrected and expanded from 1979 due to the foresight and energy of Dr “Jack” Tenorio, who also contributed a great number of specimens. Originally the collection was intended as an insect collection to assist identification of insects affecting agriculture, horticulture and silviculture in the Northern Marianas, and to contribute to the ability of pupils and students to learn more about the subject. During 2001 the collection was expanded to include all terrestrial and freshwater invertebrates, and a collection management protocol was established (see Appendices 1 and 2). The collection was originally owned by the CNMI Department of Land and Natural Resources , and was on loan to the NMC Entomology Unit for curation. During 2001 it was transferred to the NMC by agreement with Dr. “Jack” Tenorio, who emphasized the need to maintain separate teaChing material as well as identified specimens in the main collection. -

CROP PROTECTION PROGRAMME Integrated Management of Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) in India R 8089/8440 (ZA 0493/0664) Final Technical Report 1 January 2002 - 31 December 2005 Date FTR completed: February 2006 Project Leader: Professor John D Mumford, Imperial College London Indian Fruit Flies illustrated in Maxwell-Lefroy, H: Indian Insect Life: A Manual of the Insects of the Plains, Tropical India (Calcutta and Simla: Thacker, Spink, 1909). “This report is an output from a research project funded by the United Kingdom Department for International Development for the benefit of developing countries. The views expressed are not necessarily those of DFID.” Executive Summary Tephritid fruit flies cause serious damage to fruit and vegetables in South Asia and throughout much of the world. This Project assessed the power and economic efficiency of IPM controls using minimum pesticide doses. Flies affecting orchard fruit such as mangoes are attracted to the parapheromone lure methyl-eugenol, which is available from specialist suppliers as a food additive. Blocks soaked in lure and insecticide obtain good control of flies in mangoes, but the traps in use previously in India, either of soaked cotton wool, water or using extracts from Ocimum (Holy Basil), obtain levels of kill substantially inferior to soaked wooden blocks, which also have the key advantage of ease of disposition and not requiring weekly replacement. Lures may not provide full control in all cases, however, as when farms are small and pressure intense infestation is still substantial, and other controls need to be held in reserve. Flies affecting cucurbit vegetables are attracted to cue-lure, which is much more expensive than methyl-eugenol and available only in small and weak preparations, so for small farmers these flies are most economically controlled by liquid baits mixed with insecticide, which attract a wide range of flies but require more frequent replacement than lure blocks. -

Pav) (Asteraceae) RESUMO - Rachiptera limbata Bigot desenvolve-se em Baccharis linearis (R. et Pav) na região de Santiago, Chile. As larvas alimentam-se dos caules e secretam um líquido, que em contato com o ar, forma uma câmara larval, onde ocorre a passagem para o estádio de pupa. Os estádios larvais das espécies neotropicais de Tephritinae são pouco conhecidos. O presente estudo descreve a morfologia dos estádios larvais de R. limbata, comparando-os com outras espécies de Tephritinae, em uma abordagem fi logenética. Foram analisados, em microsopia de luz e de varredura, o complexo antenomaxilar, as dobras da cutícula, as margens da abertura oral, o esqueleto cefalofaríngeo, os espiráculos anterior e posterior e os lóbulos anais das larvas de primeiro, segundo, terceiro estádios e da pupa. O esqueleto cefalofaríngeo é altamente esclerotizado e apresenta um orifício ou abertura na cornua ventral, característica essa que parece ser plesiomórfi ca em R. limbata e outras espécies neotropicais. Os espiráculos anteriores estão ausentes nas larvas de primeiro estádio. Nas larvas de segundo e terceiro estádios são desenvolvida formando cinco túbulos curtos dispostos em fi leira única. -

BEZZI, Turin, Italy. (PLATES XVII-XVIII.) The new material received from the Imperial Bureau of Entomology through the kindness of the Director, Dr. G. A. K. Marshall, enables me to prepare this third paper on the Ethiopian fruit-flies. It is a proof of the great richness of the African Trypaneid fauna that of over 41 species received only 10 were referable to previously described species, and that no less than 8 new genera have been erected, most of them for very strikingly characterised forms. The TEYPANEIDAE at present known from the Ethiopian Region, with the addition of the new forms here described for the first time, are enumerated in the following systematic catalogue, which numbers 216 species. -

ELMO HARDY ENTOMOLOGIST, HAWAII AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION AND MARIAN ADACHI RESEARCH ASSISTANT, HAWAII AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION The fruit flies of Micronesia have received little attention in the literature. The only taxonomic work which has been done is that of Malloch in "Insects of Guam" (1942, B. P. Bishop Mus., Bull. 172: 201-205) and of Swezey (1946, B. P. Bishop Mus., Bull. 189: 195-200). Other than those reports there is scarcely any information on this group except for brief mentions of the pres ence of the Oriental fruit fly by Monzen [1938-1939, Oyo Dobutsu.-zasshi 10 (3-4): 142-145] and Shimizu [1935, Gunto no Sangyo 5(7) : 1-16] and a few records of the fruit flies of Guam by Beller (1948, U. S. Dept. Agric., Div. Foreign Plant Quarantine, Honolulu) and Oakley (1939, unpublished mate rial). The group is rather poorly represented in this region, and there is a scarcity of representatives of a number of the species. In the collections avail able for study there is little reared material. Most of the collecting has evidently been done by sweeping since the flower-head infesting species were most com monly taken. Little biological information is available concerning the Micronesian fruit flies. The immature stages of only three of the species are known: Dacus (Strumeta) dorsalis Hendel, D. cucurbitae Coquillett, and D. jrauenjeldi Schiner. BISHOP MUSEUM BULLETIN 172 HONOLULU, HAWAII PUBLISHED BY THE MUSEUM 1942 Issuto JuNt 1, 1942 FOREWORD The papers printed in this bulletin are the results of studies of insects collected on an entomological survey of Guam in 1936. This survey was conducted under the auspices of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association, for the purpose of studying insects of economic importance associated with the various crops grown in Guam and insects affecting man and domestic animals. Guam is the most important station between the Philippines and Honolulu on the route of the Pan-American Airways across the Pacific, and as knowl edge of the Guam insect fauna was meager, it was deemed important to acquire as complete a knowledge as possible of this fauna. Unknown insects were already being found in planes arriving at Pearl Harbor, Oahu, and, in spite of the system employed in the fumigation of the planes, an occasional insect was found which had not fully succumbed. There was some concern lest unknown pests might survive and succeed in becoming established, and, per haps, destructive to sugar cane or other crops grown in Hawaii. The plan for the survey was initiated late in 1935 by Dr. Harold L. Lyon. Director of the Experiment Station of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Associa tion. Through the efforts of Captain B. V.
