It’s one of many (maybe hundreds) of puns we’ve used around Buckner for the past 18 years, ever since “Shoes for Russian Souls” became part of our ministry, thanks to a gift from Ron Harris and KCBI Radio in Dallas. We’ve since renamed it “Buckner Shoes for Orphan ASouls®” good and even officially fit registered it, which is why you see the ®. KCBI started the program in 1994 and generously handed it over to Buckner in 1999. There would be no shoe mission trips if there were no shoe drives. We wouldn’t have 5,000 – 6,000 volunteers sorting shoes for shipment if we didn’t have people around the country collecting new shoes. Summer 2017 • 5 BUCKNER TODAY Every summer, mission teams elevate Buckner ministry throughout Texas and the seven countries where Buckner serves vulnerable children and families. Because of their willingness to minister, Buckner can accomplish more. In the past few months, 35 teams have gone on mission trips through Buckner Missions. LeTourneau University nursing students worked with local doctors to hold medical clinics at a 1 Buckner Family Hope2 Center in the Dominican Republic.3 A team from First Baptist Church in Lubbock, Texas, led clinics and did construction projects. NextStep is a supervised independent living program that provides young adults with the support they need 1 2 3 to meet their educational, career and independent living goals and achieve self-sufficiency. We’re takingYoung adults the who age NextStep! out of foster care often do so with little to no support. As a result, they are alone as they try to figure out how to navigate independent living. NextStep provides training, coaching, personalized service coordination and opportunities for spiritual development so the young women it serves can succeed. Two hundred and eighty- three episodes were viewed to understand how black female identity is represented in primetime soap and how genre influences those representation. Using Collins (2009) theory of controlling images, this study found that black female protagonists were depicted as jezebels and matriarchs. The welfare mother stereotype was updated by portrayals of black woman as hard working. Carlson Problem Daytime serials have been pOpular with American house- wives for over three decades. Experts believe that serial content is a-principal factor in their popularity. In l9hl Rudolph Arnheim conducted a content analysis of the radio soap Operas; the problem of this thesis was to determine the extent to which the content of television's daytime serials has changed since the days of radio and since Arnheim's study. This thesis includes (1) a study of the develOpment of the radio daytime serial, (2) an analysis of the audience studies concerning effects of the audio soap Operas, (3) an examination of radio production techniques, (A) a brief history of the televised daily drama, (5) a content analysis of a representative group of video daytime serials, and (6) a comparison of the data gathered in this contemporary television study with the data provided in Arnheim's early radio study. Procedure Background material for this thesis was gleaned from numerous books and periodicals. To secure the necessary data, a monitor report was completed for each television serial episode observed.
