The primary research material of the thesis consists of four interviews with members of the professional community: two staff members of team organisations, an international player, and a referee. The interviews focussed on gathering the respondents’ subjective experiences of multilingualism in their everyday work environment. They were asked to identify which languages were used in their work environment and what strategies and policies were in place to manage multilingualism. The study also explored how these individuals viewed possible difficulties and advantages which may arise from the multilingual nature of their work community. The interviews were analysed using a qualitative content analysis approach. The analysis revealed that the use of English as a lingua franca in parallel with Finnish was common in the organisations the interviewees represented. Self- translation and non-professional translations by members of the community were used to bridge gaps in participants’ language skills. The use of professional translators was not considered cost-effective or practical in the everyday ice hockey environment. While concrete multilingualism policies were not implemented, and management of multilingualism seemed to rely on implicit assumptions rather than explicit coordination, the interviewees were in general satisfied with the current state of language management in their community. Despite this, more efficient management of language issues in the future would be beneficial for ice hockey organisations not only from a practical viewpoint but possibly also in terms of facilitating better athletic achievements. Introduction Global migration of labour means that more workplaces are becoming increasingly multinational and multicultural. This development has also resulted in the multilingualisation1 of work communities that have become more international. Professional sports are a field where this effect is commonplace and due to the publicity and media coverage, particularly visible to outside observers. Despite this, multilingualism in sports has traditionally been understudied, and the existing research is largely focussed on the sport of football. This thesis seeks to fill some of this gap in multilingualism research by studying the language practices within organisational ice hockey and the management of multilingualism in everyday encounters by way of conducting research interviews with people that work within different aspects of Finnish professional ice hockey. It will also discuss the subjective perceptions of these individuals on the effect they feel multilingualism has on their work environments. The world of professional ice hockey in Finland has become more international over the past decades. In the 1988-1989 season, 92% of the players in

    Putting it on Ice III: Constructing the Hockey Family Abstracts Carly Adams & Hart Cantelon University of Lethbridge Sustaining Community through High Performance Women’s Hockey in Warner, Alberta Canada is becoming increasingly urbanized with small rural communities subject to amalgamation or threatened by decline. Statistics Canada data indicate that by 1931, for the first time in Canadian history, more citizens (54%) lived in urban centre than rural communities. By 2006, this percentage had reached 80%. This demographic shift has serious ramifications for small rural communities struggling to survive. For Warner, a Southern Alberta agricultural- based community of approximately 380 persons, a unique strategy was adopted to imagine a sense of community and to allow its residents the choice to remain ‘in place’ (Epp and Whitson, 2006). Located 65 km south of Lethbridge, the rural village was threatened with the potential closure of the consolidated Kindergarten to Grade 12 school (ages 5-17). In an attempt to save the school and by extension the town, the Warner School and the Horizon School Division devised and implemented the Warner Hockey School program to attract new students to the school and the community. By 2003, the Warner vision of an imagined community (Anderson, 1983) came to include images of high performance female hockey, with its players as visible celebrities at the rink, school, and on main street. The purpose of this paper is to explore the social conditions in rural Alberta that led to and influenced the community of Warner to take action to ensure the survival of their local school and town.

In the following sections, the focus is on players in terms of their profiling, goal setting, monitoring and team cohesiveness. In the main part of the thesis, the focus is on the project objectives. The objectives are di- vided into four basic points and gradually build on each other. The work describes how im- portant is to create a cohesive team and apply an athlete-centered approach, focusing on players as individuals. Furthermore, it is the team’s tactical preparation and the effort to reach the potential of each player towards team success. Additionally, Part I will examine the general nature of the allegations contained within the National Hockey League Concussion Litigation. Following this brief overview, Part II of this article outlines the American legal perspectives relating to tortious liability for injuries sustained as a result of player to player conduct. However, recent empirical evidence shows a clear trend of decrease in the levels of competitive balance across different leagues and sports around the world. A clear gap in the evidence exists in the Finnish sporting context and therefore this thesis aims to determine the current levels of competitive balance in Veikkausliiga and Liiga and how these levels have evolved throughout the last 30 years (1990-2019). The theoretical framework of this thesis can be traced to Simon Rottenberg’s theory of competitive balance and uncertainty of outcome, which is widely considered as the kick-start for team sport economics. The theory states that in order for a sport league to thrive, to attract spectators and thus be more profitable, the teams must be of approximately similar strength. Dominance, or in other words, a monopoly position of one or a few teams would harm the league, the main product itself. In order to measure the levels of competitive balance in the two leagues, a series of widely established measurement methods were used. The tools included the Herfindahl-Index, Gini Coefficient, standard deviation and historical winning percentages.

Only recently, the highest-level sports clubs’ have turned into businesses, starting late 1990’s. Public discussion in Finland has questioned whether using public funds on professional sports clubs is justified or not. The argument suggests that this money is either an investment by the public in the local economy, or rather a public expense that benefits no one except the club, its fans and partners. This research aims to dig further into the discussion by studying the direct economic impacts of a professional Finnish Ice-Hockey team: JYP Jyväskylä Ltd, on its home city of Jyväskylä and the surrounding region during the 2014-2015 season. These direct economic impacts are calculated according to the model based on a Keynesian- theory introduced by Könecke et al. in 2015. The results of the study went in favour of the suggestion that using public funds for professional sport clubs is a public investment in the local economy. While the game has become increasingly commodified and rationalized, and so organized on scien- tific and economic grounds, the notion of luck still finds a place in interpretations of action and outcomes in the sport. As one feature of the vocabulary of motives present in hockey, the use of luck makes sense when understood as a concrete manifestation of the underly- ing moral understandings of what is understandable and sensible about hockey. The fact that empirical uses of luck can be contested indicates the presence of underlying moral logics of the game that are not systematized and compelling but rather permeable, histori- cal and open to different formulations. The use of luck in hockey, even though sporadic and contingent, up the rationality of the game and makes it possible to inhabit a moral world where the best does not always win and the worst does not always lose. Asiakastyytyväisyyskysely toteutettiin internetin välityksellä jaettavan lomakkeen avulla, joka sisälsi 22 kysymystä.
