On Don Cherry's Citizenship in the Six String Nation
Why I’m revoking Don Cherry’s citizenship in the Six String Nation. The Six String Nation project was conceived in the divisive atmosphere of the lead up to the 1995 Quebec Referendum on sovereignty. Referenda are necessarily divisive. They take complex problems and cast them as simple choices, usually just between Yes or No. The media took its cues accordingly and the whole debate was framed as blue vs. red, Quebec vs. Ottawa, French vs. English. Even the responses of the rest of Canadians whom the referendum made mere bystanders could only be funnelled into the polarities of “Don’t Go” and “Good Riddance”. But how was that referendum supposed to account for the voices of indigenous people in Quebec, or francophones outside of Quebec or any of the thousands of other perspectives there are on what it is to be Canadian? Well, of course it wasn’t meant to. So the Six String Nation project was meant to invite those conversations by putting diverse histories and perspectives from different communities and cultures and characters into one object - a guitar - the very essence of which is to create harmony out of internal tensions. It would exist not only as an object that illustrated that complex truth but also as a living instrument through which those who played it and those who heard it could articulate those perspectives in their own way in their own place and time. Given my experience shepherding the project around the country and beyond, I can say that it has succeeded in doing just that in however small a way. -

Consumers use trade-marks to identify product quality and the manufacturer. Trade-marks are also used by the advertisers to build goodwill and encourage brand recognition. Considering the creative and ever-changing nature of the industry, there are numerous ways in which a trade-mark may be used in an advertising or marketing campaign. Some of the increasingly popular campaigns include cross-promotion or co-branding, comparative advertising and ambush marketing. The following is a discussion of some of the intellectual property concerns involved in these advertising campaigns. CO-PROMOTING AND CO-BRANDING It is becoming more common for trade-mark owners to join forces to promote their wares and services and potentially reach a new market or revitalize a brand. Recently, Kraft Canada Inc. ran a back-to-school promotion that entitled those purchasing a box of Kraft Dinner to win Crayola products. The purchaser was asked to locate a code number inside the box of Kraft Dinner and then log on to the website ytv.com. -

Throughout hockey's history, though they are not presented in the Footprints, francophone players like Guy Lafleur, Mario Lemieux, Raymond Bourque, Jacques Lemaire, and Patrick Roy also made a significant contribution to the sport. Parents still watch their children skate around cold arenas before the sun is up and backyard rinks remain national landmarks. But hockey is no longer just Canada's game. Now played in cities better known for their golf courses than their ice rinks, hockey is an international game. Hockey superstars and hallowed ice rinks became national icons as the game matured and Canadians negotiated their role in the modern era. Aims To increase student awareness of the development of the game of hockey in Canada; to increase student recognition of the contributions made by hockey players as innovators and their contributions to the game; to examine their accomplishments in their historical context; to explore how hockey has evolved into the modern game; to understand the role of memory and commemoration in our understanding of the past and present; and to critically investigate myth-making as a way of understanding the game’s relationship to national identity. NHL Hockey in the 1950s Their feeder system, which supplied all but a tiny percentage of talent to the NHL six, consisted of junior teams spread coast to coast across Canada, all of which were controlled – and sometimes wholly owned – by the major league clubs. The major league's control often reached down into the pee- wee leagues, so if a talented young player began serious competitive play for an affiliate of the Bruins, Maple Leafs or one of the others, he would remain the property of that organization until they traded or released him. With so much talent stockpiled in so few farm systems, the pay scales could be easily controlled, too. It wasn't quite cradle-to-grave ownership, but it was close. Nowhere was the stamp of the parent team Winnipeg Warriors, 1955-56, ! more traditional than in the Province of Quebec, champions of the Western Hockey League! and farm team for the Canadians that same year!! where boys of French-Canadian heritage yearned to ! be happy serfs of the Canadiens. Putting it on Ice III: Constructing the Hockey Family Abstracts Carly Adams & Hart Cantelon University of Lethbridge Sustaining Community through High Performance Women’s Hockey in Warner, Alberta Canada is becoming increasingly urbanized with small rural communities subject to amalgamation or threatened by decline. Statistics Canada data indicate that by 1931, for the first time in Canadian history, more citizens (54%) lived in urban centre than rural communities. By 2006, this percentage had reached 80%. This demographic shift has serious ramifications for small rural communities struggling to survive. For Warner, a Southern Alberta agricultural- based community of approximately 380 persons, a unique strategy was adopted to imagine a sense of community and to allow its residents the choice to remain ‘in place’ (Epp and Whitson, 2006). Located 65 km south of Lethbridge, the rural village was threatened with the potential closure of the consolidated Kindergarten to Grade 12 school (ages 5-17). In an attempt to save the school and by extension the town, the Warner School and the Horizon School Division devised and implemented the Warner Hockey School program to attract new students to the school and the community. By 2003, the Warner vision of an imagined community (Anderson, 1983) came to include images of high performance female hockey, with its players as visible celebrities at the rink, school, and on main street. The purpose of this paper is to explore the social conditions in rural Alberta that led to and influenced the community of Warner to take action to ensure the survival of their local school and town. -
