  • Poor Clare Sister from Maryland Is Elected Abbess, Succeeds Mother Angelica
Poor Clare sister from Maryland is elected abbess, succeeds Mother Angelica BALTIMORE (CNS) — When Theresa Buck was still in high school at Mount de Sales Academy in the Baltimore suburb of Catonsville, she took a standardized assessment test meant to give some indication of the kind of career that would best suit her talents, personality and interests. Topping the list of potential careers, according to the assessment? Ministry as a woman religious. An exercise completed more than two decades ago turned out to be more than prescient. Not only did the former parishioner of St. Agnes Parish in Catonsville enter the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration at the Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in rural Alabama, she recently was entrusted with leadership of the internationally known monastery. Today with the religious name of Mother Mary Paschal of the Lamb of God, she was elected abbess July 29, taking on the same post that was once held by Mother Angelica, founder of both the monastery and the global Catholic communications network known as EWTN. The Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration are a contemplative community of cloistered nuns whose charism is centered on adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Established in France in 1854, the religious community has monasteries that act autonomously. Betty Buck, Mother Mary Paschal’s mother, said the Alabama monastery had to get special permission from Rome to allow her daughter to become the abbess. At 38, she was not quite at the official minimum age requirement of 40 for the leadership position. Betty and her husband, Phil, parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Ellicott City, Maryland, said their family was overwhelmed by the news of their daughter’s election.

  • Father Malachi Martin's Visit to the Senate and Our Lady of Fatima
Dr. Robert Hickson 16 May 2016 Saint Brendan the Navigator (d.578) Saint Simon Stock (d. 1265) Saint John Nepomucene (d. 1393) Father Malachi Martin's Visit to the Senate and Our Lady of Fatima --Epigraphs-- On the Gift of Fear (Donum Timoris) as Part of the Order of Fear (Ordo Timoris): “One of the last verifiable [components] of the theses that define the image of man for our time holds that it is not seemly for man to be afraid. Waters from two sources are mingled in this attitude. One is an enlightened liberalism that relegates fearfulness to the realm of the unreal and in whose world view, accordingly, there is no room for fear except in a figurative sense. The other is an un-Christian stoicism that is secretly allied with both presumption and despair [i.e., the two forms of hopelessness, both of which are also grave sins against the Holy Ghost, in “the classical theology of the Church”] and [this stoicism] confronts in defiant invulnerability—without fear, but also without hope —the evils of existence, which it sees with admirable clarity. “The classical theology of the Church is especially removed from both the oversimplification of liberalism and the desperate rigidity of stoicism. It takes for granted that fears are a reality of human existence. And it takes equally for granted that man will respond to what is objectively fearful with fear [e.g., such as being permanently separated from the beloved, to include Our Beloved Lord and Vita Aeterna also with the Blessed Mother]....On the basis of this theology one must assume, then, that something is not quite in order [in the due and proportioned “ordo timoris”] when a man is afraid of nothing [“intimiditas”], and that the ideal of 'stoic' invulnerability and fearlessness is based on a false interpretation of man and reality itself.

What the timing of these two events means in the plan of Divine Providence may be unknown, but developments since then show that Fatima remains uppermost in the minds of many Catholics throughout the world. Shortly after the English edition of the biography appeared, for example, attorney Christopher Ferrara criticized a passage in the translation involving words of Our Lady, and he interpreted the mistranslated passage as a deliberate attempt to alter the facts relating to the Third Secret.

  • The Crux of the Matter (1984)
The Crux of the Matter (1984) by Most Rev. Donald J. Sanborn Why an April ’83 crisis happened in SSPX, and why it keeps on happening. BEWILDERED is probably the best word to describe the reaction of the faithful to the April break-up of the Society. My impres- sion, even now, is that the faithful who have read the positions of both sides are clear in their minds about the particular issues, but still do not understand just how the whole dispute started. Their impression of the Society, at least in the Northeast District, was one of harmony, steady growth, and optimism. By the Spring of 1983, the seminary had achieved its peak in growth rate, both from the point of view of new vocations and physical expansion. The laity were enthusiastic and forward-looking; people were confident that their spiritual needs would be met by the ever-expanding and apparently trouble-free Society of Saint Pius X. December, 1982, brought in $60,000 to the Seminary building fund; January $50,000. To my disbelief, it seemed that we were going to get through the first part of our contract with- out having to borrow a cent. Never had there been such a surge in new vocations; never had it looked so good for the Fall semes- ter. Had things been normal this past year, I estimate that we would have accepted 20 to 25 new candidates. Then disaster struck, like the tornado that descends swiftly but silently from the somber, sultry cloud upon its unsuspecting victims. Accusations were hurled, priests were thrown out on to the street, seminarians left.

A Sharp Little Affair: The Archeology of the Big Hole Battlefield By Douglas D. Scott With Special Sections by Melissa A. Connor Dick Harmon Lester Ross REPRINTS IN ANTHROPOLOGY VOLUME 45 1994 Published by J & L Reprint Company 410 Wedgewood Drive Lincoln, Nebraska 68510 Revised for PDF publication June 2009 Acknowledgments First and foremost we wish to acknowledge and thank Hank Williams, Jr. for his interest and financial support. The National Park Service seldom has the luxury of conducting an archeological research project that is not tied to some development project or some overriding management action. Mr. William's support allowed us to pursue this investigation for the benefit of the park without being tied to a specific management requirement. His support did allow us to accomplish several management goals that otherwise would have waited their turn in the priority system. This project has had more than its fair share of those who have given their time, resources, and knowledge without thought of compensation. Specifically Irwin and Riva Lee are to be commended for their willingness to ramrod the metal detecting crew. They volunteered for the duration for which we are truly grateful. Aubrey Haines visited us during the field investigations and generously shared his vast knowledge of the Big Hole battle history with us. His willingness to loan material and respond to our questions is truly appreciated. Former Unit Manager Jock Whitworth and his entire staff provided much support and aid during the investigations. Jock and his staff allowed us to invade the park and their good-natured acceptance of our disruption to the daily schedule is acknowledged with gratitude.

  • The Assumption of Mary - Part II: Typology by Greg Witherow
The Assumption of Mary - Part II: Typology By Greg Witherow In our previous article we saw that Enoch, Elijah and perhaps Moses were bodily assumed into heaven and as such, provide precedence in our case for M ary’s Assumption. We will now turn our attention to typology1, establishing a link between the Ark of the Covenant and Mary. Once the typological link is established, we will glean from it further evidence for Mary’s bodily Assumption into heaven. But first, a brief background. The Ark of the Covenant was the most holy object in the Old Testament. In the Temple the Ark resided behind the veil in the holy of holies, the inner sanctum, where only the high priest could enter once a year. The Ark contained three objects consisting of manna from heaven, Aaron’s rod that had budded and the tablets of the Ten Commandments. The Ark was a box-like object made of acacia wood covered in pure gold. Two cherubim on each end, facing each other were mounted on the top. The Ark had been designed under specific instructions given by God and was not to be touched by man. As such, it had rings on both sides enabling it to be carried by poles. In the gospel of Luke we read that Mary was given a message by the angel Gabriel, namely that she was to conceive a son by the Holy Ghost. Mary then makes her way to her relative Elizabeth in the Judean hill country. As she approaches Elizabeth she greets her, where upon John the Baptist leaps for joy in his mother’s womb and Elizabeth cries out - for why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? Elizabeth then explains the reaction of her son.
