7 Two Bridges Young Composers Compositions

Morning - Ken Aida Hello, my name is Ken Aida and I play the piano and viola. I started learning composition for about a year with Mr. Cyrus. It was a great experience, and I sometimes feel proud when I finish a piece. It takes lots of hard work, but in the end, all the time pays off. Mr. Cyrus taught me to use musescore to write music. The reason why I wrote Morning is that morning is the start of a new day. Morning is supposed to be a happy time that’s bright and cheerful. Every morning, your mind is fresh and new and ready for the day. It is the time where your brain is most productive, and when you could do your best. These are the reasons why I wrote Morning.

Metamorphosis - Tina He Metamorphosis is a piece about changing small or big, no matter what phase of change it is, sudden or gradual. But even while changing and growing into something different, it always retains some quality of it while developing or learning new parts of itself, hence its name. Originally this piece was called “Circumference” due to the fact that I just really wanted a well-rounded piece for once, but then it was called “Dye” or “Dyed” both which didn’t settle well in the stomach as you can see (By the way, I meant the color dye, not the other one… you probably know what I mean). I started off with something small, a small melody; I wanted it to repeat because learning from the previous piece, which was a little too inconsistent for my mother’s taste, I wanted to be able to connect the ideas that I had with a single thread. I don’t know if it actually worked but I think that this might be a little more successful than my previous piece.

Dark Mind - Minh Anh Pham My name is Minh Anh. I am 11 years old. I’ve been playing the piano for more than two years. I started taking composition classes in the summer of 2017. I thought that it would be fun, learning how to write amazingly inspiring pieces.

I constantly have trouble with writing pieces, they’re either really hard to be generated or they’re just too cliché. I need a whole lot of inspiration and ideas to come up with successful ideas. Although the process is hard, confusing and stressful, it could also be fun, enjoyable, and exciting. Only if you look at it in a different way. If you’re being forced into it, it isn’t a pleasant feeling.

Now, about the piece that you’re about to hear today. One day, I was thinking about my homework assignment on writing an orchestra piece. I said to myself, “What will bring out my style of forte and suddenness? What will grab the attention of bored ladies and tired gentlemen?” I thought, and thought, and thought. Nothing would come to mind. I slept on it for a few days, trying to generate some ideas. That was when I started to listen to some more orchestra and string quartets pieces to get an idea of what my piece will be like. After hearing a few string quartets and a couple of orchestra pieces, I got my idea.

8 Two Bridges Young Composers Compositions

It was quite simple, the violinist moves the melody along with the ups and downs. Then, the viola comes in with a quite similar part but not exactly. This was when I had some trouble. It wasn’t convincing enough. Due to those difficulties, I asked my teacher for help and advice (that I really need). The rest of the piece went on and about fluently, but I got a little bit excited for the end so I added some surprises. I hope you like it. Dark Mind

In the Tide of War - Nathaniel Tang Hi, I’m Nathaniel Tang. I’m a 16 year old kid in Manhattan that just wants to make music and art for fun. My goal is to one day create an animation or game of my own by myself so I’m learning how to compose music. The idea was to make a song for when a player lost the . However, it transformed into a piece where it started to sound more like an epic battle or war compared to fighting a video game boss. Basically, I thought it sounded more serious.

The Flower Life - Valerie Tang My name is Valerie and I composed the piece called The Flower Life. At first I had no idea what I was trying to make the piece sound like, so the process of making it was difficult for me. After a while I thought I wanted the piece to be about a flower’s life. So I included a part where they are blooming, alive (like adults in human life), and a part where there would die, and when they would blossom again.

The first part is about the flower growing, the second part is about the where the flower is living its life and the third part is where the flower is dying. The last part is where the flower is growing again.

Special thanks to Cyrus von Hochstetter for connecting his young student composers with our Nassau String Orchestra. www.cyrusvonh.com

James Ludwig (Nassau Men’s Choir) grew up singing as a chorister at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City on Long Island, where he learned to read music, sing Renaissance polyphony, tie a tie, and play ultimate frisbee. He currently teaches choral music in the Herricks School District on Long Island, where he works with both middle and high school singers, whose energy and sense of humor are truly a source of constant inspiration. Having been a singer himself throughout middle and high school, James believes choral music is especially valuable for young people.
