I started learning composition for about a year with Mr. Cyrus. It was a great experience, and I sometimes feel proud when I finish a piece. It takes lots of hard work, but in the end, all the time pays off. Mr. Cyrus taught me to use musescore to write music. The reason why I wrote Morning is that morning is the start of a new day. Morning is supposed to be a happy time that’s bright and cheerful. Every morning, your mind is fresh and new and ready for the day. It is the time where your brain is most productive, and when you could do your best. These are the reasons why I wrote Morning. Metamorphosis - Tina He Metamorphosis is a piece about changing small or big, no matter what phase of change it is, sudden or gradual. But even while changing and growing into something different, it always retains some quality of it while developing or learning new parts of itself, hence its name. Originally this piece was called “Circumference” due to the fact that I just really wanted a well-rounded piece for once, but then it was called “Dye” or “Dyed” both which didn’t settle well in the stomach as you can see (By the way, I meant the color dye, not the other one… you probably know what I mean). I started off with something small, a small melody; I wanted it to repeat because learning from the previous piece, which was a little too inconsistent for my mother’s taste, I wanted to be able to connect the ideas that I had with a single thread. I don’t know if it actually worked but I think that this might be a little more successful than my previous piece. Dark Mind - Minh Anh Pham My name is Minh Anh. I am 11 years old. I’ve been playing the piano for more than two years. I started taking composition classes in the summer of 2017. I thought that it would be fun, learning how to write amazingly inspiring pieces. I constantly have trouble with writing pieces, they’re either really hard to be generated or they’re just too cliché. I need a whole lot of inspiration and ideas to come up with successful ideas. Although the process is hard, confusing and stressful, it could also be fun, enjoyable, and exciting. Only if you look at it in a different way. If you’re being forced into it, it isn’t a pleasant feeling.

  • A Sharp Little Affair: the Archeology of Big Hole Battlefield
A Sharp Little Affair: The Archeology of the Big Hole Battlefield By Douglas D. Scott With Special Sections by Melissa A. Connor Dick Harmon Lester Ross REPRINTS IN ANTHROPOLOGY VOLUME 45 1994 Published by J & L Reprint Company 410 Wedgewood Drive Lincoln, Nebraska 68510 Revised for PDF publication June 2009 Acknowledgments First and foremost we wish to acknowledge and thank Hank Williams, Jr. for his interest and financial support. The National Park Service seldom has the luxury of conducting an archeological research project that is not tied to some development project or some overriding management action. Mr. William's support allowed us to pursue this investigation for the benefit of the park without being tied to a specific management requirement. His support did allow us to accomplish several management goals that otherwise would have waited their turn in the priority system. This project has had more than its fair share of those who have given their time, resources, and knowledge without thought of compensation. Specifically Irwin and Riva Lee are to be commended for their willingness to ramrod the metal detecting crew. They volunteered for the duration for which we are truly grateful. Aubrey Haines visited us during the field investigations and generously shared his vast knowledge of the Big Hole battle history with us. His willingness to loan material and respond to our questions is truly appreciated. Former Unit Manager Jock Whitworth and his entire staff provided much support and aid during the investigations. Jock and his staff allowed us to invade the park and their good-natured acceptance of our disruption to the daily schedule is acknowledged with gratitude.

Operation ICEBERG: How the Strategic Influenced the Tactics of LTG Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr. at Okinawa By Evan John Isaac A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of History Auburn, Alabama December 12, 2015 Approved by Mark Sheftall, Chair, Associate Professor of History David Carter, Associate Professor of History Keith Hebert, Assistant Professor of History Abstract The Okinawan campaign was World War II’s last major offensive operation. Selected as the last position for which to organize the invasion of Japan, the scale and intensity of combat led to critical accounts from journalists accustomed to the war’s smaller amphibious operations in 1943 and 1944. This criticism carried forward to later historical analysis of the operation’s ground commander, Army Lieutenant General Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr. Labeled as inexperienced and an Army partisan, Buckner was identified as a major contributor to the campaign’s high casualty numbers. This historical analysis has failed to address the impacts of decisions on early war strategy and their impacts to three key strategic factors: a massive shortage of service units, a critical deficit in shipping, and the expansion of strategic bombing in the Pacific. This thesis examines the role that these strategic factors played in influencing the tactical decision making of General Buckner at Okinawa. ii Table of Contents Abstract……………………………………………………………………….....……….ii List of Figures…......…………………………………………...…………………….…iv

The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School UNDER WAGNER’S SHADOW: DELIUS’S USE OF WAGNERIAN MODELS IN THE MAGIC FOUNTAIN A Thesis in Music Theory and History by Timothy M. Farrand © 2020 Timothy M. Farrand Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts December 2020 ii The thesis of Timothy M. Farrand was reviewed and approved by the following: Charles Youmans Professor of Music Thesis Advisor Eric McKee Professor of Music David Frego Director of the School of Music iii ABSTRACT After 1900, Frederick Delius’s unique compositional style bears little resemblance to any singular influence. In the thirty-eight year apprentice period that led to the development of this style, Delius drew upon a wide range of references from the Norwegian mountains, to the “Negro” spirituals sung by former slaves in Florida, to the dramatic style of Richard Wagner. Studies have been written detailing the impact that his two years spent in Florida had on Delius as well as the twenty visits that he made to Norway throughout his life, ten of which occurred during his apprentice period. Several scholars have pointed out the similarities between Delius’s early harmonic language and that of Richard Wagner but there has not been a study showing the importance of Wagner’s influence upon the development of Delius’s dramatic style. In the creation of his second opera The Magic Fountain (1894-95), Delius used the operatic works of Richard Wagner, specifically Tristan und Isolde and Parsifal, as musical, dramatic, and philosophical models. The use of Wagner’s works as a model for The Magic Fountain allowed Delius to discover his own artistic voice, which he continued to refine until it was fully formed in 1900.

  • The Elgar Society JOURNAL
The Elgar Society JOURNAL FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE MARCH 2001 Vol.12 No.1 ELGAR AND WARLOCK (PHILIP HESELTINE) Barry Smith [Until recently Barry Smith was an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Music at the University of Cape Town, and is presently Organist and Master of the Choristers at St George’s Cathedral, Cape Town. He is founder and director of the St George’s Singers, and has made frequent recordings for radio, television and compact disc. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music and the Guild of Church Musicians. A noted authority on Peter Warlock, his writings include the widely acclaimed biography Peter Warlock : The Life of Philip Heseltine (OUP, 1994), and Frederick Delius and Peter Warlock : A Friendship Revealed (OUP, 2000). He has also edited a four-volume collection of Warlock’s miscellaneous writings about music (Thames Publishing).] On the surface the coupling of the names Elgar and Peter Warlock (Philip Heseltine) would seem rather far-fetched. Just as there is little of the modal, ‘pastoral’ or ‘folk-song’ elements in Elgar’s music, so are there few traces of nineteenth century German Romanticism in the music of Warlock. Yet, if one delves deeper into their characters and their music, there was much in common between these two composers. Both were self-taught, both felt at times alienated from society, both suffered from bouts of depression, and both have a completely original, uniquely personal quality displayed in their compositions. Besides the innate yet really indefinable ‘Englishness’ of their music, a work by Elgar (despite the obvious influences of the German Romantic school) has a stamp all of its own just as a piece by Peter Warlock (in spite of his early obsession with the music of Delius and later van Dieren and Bartók) has a musical language that is absolutely his and his alone.
