The Assumption of Mary - Part II: Typology By Greg Witherow In our previous article we saw that Enoch, Elijah and perhaps Moses were bodily assumed into heaven and as such, provide precedence in our case for M ary’s Assumption. We will now turn our attention to typology1, establishing a link between the Ark of the Covenant and Mary. Once the typological link is established, we will glean from it further evidence for Mary’s bodily Assumption into heaven. But first, a brief background. The Ark of the Covenant was the most holy object in the Old Testament. In the Temple the Ark resided behind the veil in the holy of holies, the inner sanctum, where only the high priest could enter once a year. The Ark contained three objects consisting of manna from heaven, Aaron’s rod that had budded and the tablets of the Ten Commandments. The Ark was a box-like object made of acacia wood covered in pure gold. Two cherubim on each end, facing each other were mounted on the top. The Ark had been designed under specific instructions given by God and was not to be touched by man. As such, it had rings on both sides enabling it to be carried by poles. In the gospel of Luke we read that Mary was given a message by the angel Gabriel, namely that she was to conceive a son by the Holy Ghost. Mary then makes her way to her relative Elizabeth in the Judean hill country. As she approaches Elizabeth she greets her, where upon John the Baptist leaps for joy in his mother’s womb and Elizabeth cries out - for why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? Elizabeth then explains the reaction of her son. -

O'Carroll [1986; 1] notes that Gregory of Nyssa reported a marian apparition to St Gregory the Wonderworker ('Thaumaturgus') in the 3rd century, and Ashton [1988; 188] records the 4th-century marian apparition that is supposed to have led to the building of Santa Maria Maggiore basilica, Rome. -

They understand the emotional roller coaster that process can be. We can start with “vain” plans of demonstrating our success to neighbors and relatives and quickly degenerate, in the face of delays, cost overruns, and shoddy workmanship, into taking the names of various contractors, craftsmen, and inspectors “in vain” in another sense of that word! I am happy to report that the labor of building the Lord’s own house through Catholic educa - Brother James Butler, FSC tion in our Baltimore District has continued in earnest, not in vain, this past year. So many of our Provincial pro tem schools, Central Catholic, La Salle High, La Salle University, Calvert Hall, and St. John’s, to name a few, have undertaken extensive renovations. The face of that old grand lady of the shore, Ocean Rest, has been uplifted a little, once of necessity, and another time through a generous do - nation from someone wishing our older Brothers to be more comfortable there. In this instance the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to three ordinary Portuguese country children over a six-month period starting on 13 May 1917. During these visits the children reported that she asked them to pray for the souls of sinners, for the soldiers in World War I, and for Russia. During and immediately after the Marian apparitions in Fátima, powerful conservative players in Lisbon seized on the symbolism of the event to discredit the anticlerical First Republic. As the situation unfolded, this religion-politics dynamic took the form of popular Catholic resistance in the countryside to an urban-based elite- driven secularization, setting the stage for the subsequent emergence of the Salazar regime. Some political scientists and historians have treated these events only as a case of popular reaction against modernity, without any enduring consequences. In this view, Fátima was not much more than a useful symbolic tool of conservative resistance to the First Republic, and it set the groundwork for the subsequent dictatorship. -

[1-2] rd nd 3 Angelic Apparition in the fall of 1916: Angel brings Holy Communion, teaches the 2 Fatima Prayer “Most Holy Trinity…” [2] He is believed by many to be St. Michael. [3] Fatima – Muhammad had a daughter by this name. Also a Moslem princess by this name married a Crusader, was baptized, and as a widow went to a convent. [3] Lucia Dos Santos – Received Holy Communion at age 6 – “O Lord make me a saint. Keep my heart always pure, for You alone.” [4] Benedict XV – On May 5, 1917 he invoked the most holy Virgin’s help for peace and added the invocation “Queen of Peace, pray for us!” to the Litany of Loreto. [6] 1st Marian Apparition, May 13 1917, a Sunday. Our Lady promises a total of seven apparitions, asks them to pray the Rosary and if they are willing to suffer much. She then imparts a profound grace. [7] 2nd Marian Apparition, June 13 1917, Feast of St. Anthony. Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, God is outraged by sins, and asks us to make much reparation. [10-11] 3rd Marian Apparition, July 13 1917, Pray the Rosary every day for peace, only our Lady can help. -

The Fraternities of St. Dominic July 2008 SPECIAL ISSUE DECLARATIONS OF THE MASTER of the ORDER REGARDING THE RULE OF THE LAY FRATERNITIES OF ST. DOMINC Letter from the President This special issue of eLumen presents the English translation of the newly approved General Declarations Regarding the Rule of Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic and a marvelous overview of the various Rules that have served over the centuries. Some will view these new Declarations with great trepidation and question the neces- sity for them. Some will almost automatically fear that they are “taking away” what they view as essential to their understanding of the Dominican laity. Others might dismiss them out of hand as just more rules and regulations that probably have little effect on them. The Decla- rations are only four pages but, considered carefully, contain very definitive terms and state- ments that do not diminish the Lay Dominican vocation but very positively affirm it. in the true Dominican tradition shows that we can renew and affirm that vocation while we also adapt ourselves to the needs of our times and provide legislative remedy for those areas that we have not been able to address previously. To the question, “why these changes;” the answer can be found in the very first line of the Declarations and that is “to fan anew the flame of the tradition and vocation of the Lay branch of the Order of Preachers.” It lays the legal foundation for the authority of the Lay branch affirming the principle of self-government acting through this Congress and in con- cert with the Master and the Acts of the General Chapters of the Order.
