In 1997, they formed their own team, Smokin’ Guns BBQ. Phil & Linda have competed in over 350 contests in 15 states accumulating nearly 500 awards including 23 state championships and the prestigious Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue Grand Champion title. In 2000, Smokin’ Guns launched a line of BBQ rubs. The Smokin’ Guns BBQ rubs are available across the country in specialty stores and through their Web site. In 2003, after leaving their respective careers, Phil & Linda opened Smokin’ Guns BBQ & Catering, a 50-seat restaurant in North Kansas City, Missouri, bringing to the public their world championship quality barbecue. Phil & Linda continue to hit the competition circuit on weekends, which frequently results in more awards. They leave the restaurant in the very capable hands of their son and daughter-in-law, Kevin & Rachel Hopkins, who have worked here since the beginning. In July 2010, Smokin’ Guns BBQ was featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives television show as part of Guy Fieri’s Kansas City Barbeque Tour. The national exposure and response to the show was phenomenal. In January 2013, Phil & Linda opened a new building with enough space to accommodate Smokin’ Guns BBQ growth well into the future.
