In order to show the changing policies and attitudes in the Catholic educational system which have resulted from the teachings of Vatican II a comparative methodology is used. The study first sets forth the philosophical-theological principles of Catholic education in the pre-Vatican II period from 1929 to 19 62. Special consideration is given to four concepts, "Church," "revelation," "ecumenism," and "reli­ gious freedom." The application of these principles to,the Catholic educational structure is then presented. The latter half of the study is devoted to the philosophical-theological principles of Catholic education as found in the documents of the Second Vatican Council. Here, also the concepts of "Church," "revelation," "ecumenism," and "religious ■ freedom" are discussed. The development in Catholic teaching is explained in this section. Vatican II1s concepts are then applied to the educational system. Current implementation of these con­ cepts as found in textbooks and Catholic schools today is vii , cited to show that Vatican II1s teachings are more than theoretical, but are also practical« By using a comparative methodology, that is, presenting pre-Vatican II and Vatican II principles and application to education, the effects of Vatican II on Catholic education can be seen. CHAPTER I • RELIGION IN AMERICA Introduction Since the Second Vatican Council many changes have taken place in the Catholic Church. Changes in education are included among the effects of Vatican II. This paper analyzes the philosophy of Catholic - education in the United States. The first chapter gives an historical description of the inception of Catholic education and Catholic schools in America. This description is followed by a presentation of the philosophical and theological principles of Catholic education in the pre-Vatican II period. This is the content of Chapter II. Chapter III shows the application of these principles to Catholic education.. Chapters IV and V analyze the philosophical and theological basis of Catholic education as found in the documents of Vatican Council II. The principles of Vatican II are treated in Chapter IV and the application of these principles is found in Chapter V. Early Colonial Period The place of Catholic education in the United States' is best understood in terms of the religious history of American people. .This history, in turn, raises an important question: Were the colonists genuinely religious? 1 This, is a debatable question. Historians such as Hudson (1965), Olmstead (1960), and Gaustad (1966) held that the first settlers were indeed religious. Other historians, however, have challenged this position.     ABSTRACT The Donatist Church in an Apocalyptic Age Jesse A. Hoover, Ph.D. Mentor: Daniel H. Williams, Ph.D. As a dissident Christian tradition that still endured sporadic Imperial persecution, the Donatist church occupied a unique niche within the wider apocalyptic milieu of late antiquity. This was an era characterized by intense eschatological speculation, spurred on by the recent political ascendency of Christianity within the Empire, the rise of rival theological communions in its wake, and mounting anxiety over the increasing tenuousness of Roman rule in the western provinces. Despite its often-overstated estrangement from the transmarine Christian communities of late antiquity, Donatism was no stranger to this phenomenon. In this dissertation, I wish to contextualize extant Donatist interaction with apocalyptic exegesis in order to see where it remained in continuity with the wider western apocalyptic tradition and where it diverged. This is a topic which will require some nuance. The dominant tendency within early and mid-twentieth century academic discussions of Donatist apocalypticism – when it is mentioned at all – have been to portray it as evidence of an anachronistic inclination within Donatist theology or as a symptom of simmering national or economic dissatisfaction, a religious warrant for social unrest. Reacting to such interpretations, more recent discussions of Donatism which emphasize its theological viability have tended to avoid the topic altogether. In this project, in contrast, I portray Donatist apocalyptic exegesis as an essentially dynamic, adaptive theological phenomenon. As befits an ecclesiastical communion which once formed the majority church in North Africa, Donatist interaction with apocalypticism was neither monolithic nor static.

    CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Mater ecclesia has been one of the more prevalent and unique expressions for conveying the nature and function of the church in Christian thought. Unlike other ecclesial metaphors, such as the Body of Christ or People of God, mater ecclesia lacks a direct scriptural antecedent. Although various maternal images exist in Scripture, none are explicitly associated with the Christian community itself.1 Moreover, the metaphor of mater ecclesia appeared suddenly in late second-century patristic literature and without explanation. Yet, once the image was introduced, patristic writers continuously employed mater ecclesia as an image characterizing the corporate identity of the church. Epitomized in Cyprian‘s oft-repeated dictum, ―One cannot have God for a Father who does not have the church for a mother,‖ patristic writers understood the church‘s maternity as a natural extension of God‘s paternity, and an individual‘s association with her as an absolute requirement for salvation.2 The popularity of this image grew to such an extent, especially in the ancient western church, that the figure of mater ecclesia became the subject of not only ecclesiologically-focused treatises but Christian poetry, mosaics, and architecture as well. 1 Paul S.     1 Trinity Journal 28 (2007):205-213 Mark 13:32 and Christ’s Supposed Ignorance: Four Patristic Solutions 1 THE PROBLEM OF CHRIST’S SUPPOSED IGNORANCE Referring to the time of His Second Coming, Jesus is recorded as saying, “But of that day or hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone ” (Mark 13:32, NASB. The word alone is italicized because it was supplied by the translator). The church fathers spilled much ink explaining this statement of the Lord, most often because of its import regarding Christology. 2 Since the passage allegedly presents Christ as ignorant, the Arians of the early church, who denied that the Son was consubstantial with the Father, used it as a proof-text for their belief in a less-than-divine Son of God. 3 On the other hand, those who held to Nicene orthodoxy and believed that Jesus was fully God and possessed all the attributes of divinity, including omniscience, responded to the Arians with Colossians 3:2, “In Him are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” The adherents of Nicene orthodoxy, besides asserting Christ’s omniscience, also had to make sense out of Mark 13:32, which seemed to teach that Jesus was ignorant of at least one detail concerning the future, i.e. the time of His return. To solve the theological dilemma of the omniscient Son of God not knowing the time of His own Second Coming, the church fathers proposed a variety of explanations. This article presents and evaluates four of their solutions—the philological solution of Basil of 2 Caesarea, two “figures of speech” solutions offered by Augustine of Hippo and Gregory of Tours respectively, and the anthropological solution of Athanasius of Alexandria.
