Quick warning. Today's episode involves some discussion of sexual violence. It comes up early, and we wanted to give you a heads up. 00:00:08 Music Music Quiet music with melodic singing. 00:00:12 Ben Harrison Host The French title of today’s film is Rebelle, which is a true cognate: means the same in English as you would guess. But that’s not its English title, maybe because the word "rebel" has been so thoroughly monopolized in English by a single entertainment franchise. Rebels have graduated from bullseyeing womp rats in their T-16s and are now taking the fight to the Empire. But despite that near monopoly of association, it remains easy for the media to completely rob us of a nuanced understanding of a civil conflict by using the term "rebel" to describe one of the sides. It starts to evoke terms like "freedom fighters," which we've all been trained to mentally translate as "terrorists." In today’s film, our main character Komona feels so far from all of these definitions. She is a twelve-year-old girl, who is basically too young to be motivated by the forces we imagine inspire people to become rebels. In fact, it’s the rebels that completely wreck her life. Her coastal village is just sitting there minding its own business when they come collect the youngsters, force her to murder her family, and then spirit her away in a motorized tree trunk canoe to become a soldier for their cause. -

Speech by Carolle Brabant, Quebec MBA
QUEBEC MBA ASSOCIATION APRIL 25, 2012 The Canadian audiovisual industry: We mean business Speech delivered by Carolle Brabant, C.P.A., C.A., MBA Executive Director, Telefilm Canada I’d like to thank you for being here today as well as thank the Quebec MBA Association for making culture a part of these lunch-time talks. As an MBA graduate myself, I’m delighted to be able to use this forum to speak to you about a passionate and important industry for the economic and cultural future of Canada: the audiovisual industry. I decided to join this industry over 21 years ago and I’ve never regretted it. It has let me combine my passion for business with my passion for the arts. Every day, I get to work with inspirational, dynamic people who motivate me. 1/24 There’s been much talk of culture in the media these past few weeks as a result of the federal government’s recent budget cuts. But there’s also been much talk about the success garnered by Canadian productions. One need only think of the tremendous box office success enjoyed by Starbuck. It was announced this week that DreamWorks has acquired the remake rights and that Ken Scott would be the director. Then, of course, there’s Monsieur Lazhar, which made it all the way to the Oscars! The Canadian audiovisual industry is a vibrant, active industry that touches us every day through our television screens, at the movies, and increasingly on our computers and phones. It is an industry deserving of our attention, notably because of its contribution to the culture and economy of our country. -

Griffintown Golroo Mofarrahi
Griffintown Golroo Mofarrahi Post-professional graduate program in Cultural Landscapes School of Architecture McGill University August 2009 Report Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree of Master ofArchitecture Golroo Mofarrahi, 2009 Abstract: This study originates from observation that urban neigh bourhoods are in continuous transition as the economy ebbs and flows. Residential neighbour- hoods will either collapse or redlined for new development as their residents start to move out (The Lure of the Local, 202). At the same time, coun- try towns are being abandoned, working class neighbourhoods are further ghettoized and steel towns are rusting in decay as “deserted downtowns con- trast with exurban building booms” (The Lure of the Local, 202). An example of this type of neighbourhood is Griffintown, which was once a working class neighbourhood squeezed between Saint Gabriel farm and the suburbs of Recollets and Victoria town in Montreal. Griffintown was an industrial and residential district. It was urbanised in the 19th century and gradually decayed through the 20th century. As an industrial district it saw the birth of very first large factories of Canada and was known as the industrial heartland of Canada. The area was of great interest to most developers, and various projects have been proposed for this area. This report addresses the follow ing question: How does the extent artefact system in Griffintown represent tangible evidence of the way of life before forced resettlement, and are there any artefacts worth preserving in Griffintown, an area slated for imminent development? I Résumé: Cette étude trouve son origine dans la notion selon laquelle les quartiers ur- bains sont engagés dans un cycle de croissance et de déclin soumis aux aléas de la conjoncture économique. -
